JESSIE'S POV
"Sign the damn papers!"
It had been four days after I visited the Ruger company. I was told to go home, think about it and get back to Mr. Leonard.
I was still cleaning the dishes we used for breakfast when I heard loud voices outside the house.
"What's the matter." I wondered. The past last days was horrible for me as I kept contemplating on the decision to take.
I didn't want to talk to my stepmother about it but she kept insisting so when I did, she encouraged me to go on with the marriage.
"This would be a big break through for us. Connie could finish her education and you would live your life enjoying the right of a married woman." She responded as I stared at her.
Money. That was all cared about. She made it so obvious and didn't give a thought to anything anyone thought.
She had pleaded with me so many times to go back and sign the contract and get married to Mr. Ruger's son but I had refused.
"Sign the contract!"
Mr. Ruger had sent his thugs to my home to make me sign the contract. This time I was given no option.
"It's either you sign the paper or we'll burn down this damn house, you choose."
"Please. I beg you.. help me plead with your boss, I will surely pay back the debt my father owned." I asked again.
"Just do what they want please. I don't want them to burn this place, even thought it's old. It's the only place we have." Connie said in a way of encouragement.
I gazed at her, after all, she's had it easy all her life do she wouldn't understand.
"Jessie, you need to consider your father properties.. would you want them to burn this place down? This is the only inheritance you have of your father..
"Okay.. I… will do it." I stammered.
"Good, you can sign the papers."
I stretched my hands, took the pen from the huge man and held it out to sign the papers. I was literally shaking as I did so. After I did that, I broke down in tears.
It was the worst thing that I had ever done.
"Can I meet him?" I cleaned my tears, hoping to sound courageous.
"Of course, Ma'am." The then arrogant thug talked more slowly and quietly. They had come with two cars.
"I advise you park your bags because you wouldn't be returning home." He said to me and it didn't in anyway make me feel better.
"What?" I was shocked at that statement. "What do you mean I won't return?:
"What I mean is that you are already married and so therefore you would continue to stay with your husband. Park your bags, let's be on our way."
It was a hard decision to make but I knew this was how it should be since I already signed the contract that made me a wife to him.
I quietly went into my room and parked the few clothes I had. My step mother watched me park and didn't try to stop me.
"I just want to say thank you to you, Jessie. You saved us and I promise you will never regret this." Lena replied.
I hates the fact that I was the one being used to pay my father's debt but I couldn't stay and watch my father's properties burn down.
"Take care of yourself." Lena said again with a feeling of satisfaction.
"Get in." The huge man ordered.
"Okay."
It was a quiet drive. I didn't make a sound just as the men didn't say a word. It was like a heavy stillness defended upon us. The guards appeared to be dumb as no one said a word, I could even hear the chirping of birds as they drove.
My head was feeling heavy and I knew immediately that I had a headache. I lay down hoping it would subside and stop the thoughts going through my head.
When we arrived. Mr Ruger was waiting in front of the huge mansion. I noticed his slight surprised when I came down the car. He was secretly happy that I came.
"Jessie, its good that you came." He simply said and turned to ask the maids to help me keep my bags into the room.
"Can I meet him? The man I'm supposed to be married to?" I asked, realizing the fact that I haven't even seen the picture of the man I'm married to.
"Supposed to?" Mr. Ruger smiled while correcting me. "You're married already. Anyway, let's go."
Walking into the huge mansion made me realise that I haven't been to any nice place since I was given birth to. My father was a good man but he was an average earner so we lived with what he could provide.
"Here." We entered a room which in all means was a Muscular in nature and so I believed it must be the son's room.
"He'll soon be here. I wonder why they have a maid on wheels." I wondered as someone backed us when we entered.
"Dad, is she the one?" I voice asked and it hit me.
"Wait.. is he the one?" I was stunned.
"Yeah. He is." Mr. Ruger answered. "That's Donald Ruger, the heir to the RUGER company."
I watched as a maid went to get him turn towards me.
"Why does she look like this?"
"Donald be nice. She's your wife." Mr. Ruger replied. "Get to know her."
I stood, confused and amazed at how I was deceived. I was actually coming home to a physically deranged man who was one wheel car that he couldn't turn on his own. The man's body rested on a sleek black wheelchair, it's mental frame glittering as a reflection of the light.
"Who is she?" Donald had a disgusting look on his face. "She isn't even pretty.. not like the girls I dated. She's outdated."
"Why is he on a wheel chair?" I asked, still trying to understand. "Why?"
"Why what? You are the desperate fool that got married to me because of money. Who wants a man on a wheelchair but you agreed. It shows how selfish you are."
I realised that this man was not just physically disabled but also arrogant and selfish. I was in for a long, long boring ride.
"Yo deceived me.. you didn't tell me he was.. he was.. was.. in this state." I complained trying to sound as nice as I could.
"What a fool." I heard him say and I know that was the height of it. How could he call me a fool when I was the one being deceived here.
"Take it easy, Miss. Brooke. This is your husband and you have the duty of taking care of him." Mr. Ruger said, patted his son's back and left the room, satisfactorily.
