Chapter 4

1654 Words
Brooklynne’s POV Mia and I met in the dining hall. We ate breakfast quickly, sharing small bits of conversations. Mia’s consisted mostly of the banquet, how she was going to wear her hair, and about the dress that she was hoping to find. I’ve always thought it was strange, the life of us females when we are born into a powerful family, like an Alpha or Beta role. I can honesty say that I’ve never been envious of Mia’s life. There is always someone watching you, someone to impress, and important societal rules to follow. I couldn’t do it. I enjoy my small role in this world. There’s no greater scheme for me. No one depending on me, it’s just me and my bakery. And I’m more than okay with that. I talked about the cake, and how I just had a few last minute touches and it would be ready to go. After I finished eating I got up and gathered my plate and my trash. I put my plate in the dishwasher and my trash in the bin before waving to Mia. She waved back and we went our separate ways. I hurried back to my room, gathered my phone, keys and purse and headed to the bakery. I still have hundreds of rolls to finish plus the cake, and that’s not counting my daily sells. I made it to the bakery and unlocked the door, rushing behind the counter to shut off the alarms. If you wait more then seven seconds to type in the code, it sends a ping to the Gamma. Which in this case is Martin, and he would come check it out to make sure there’s no security issues going on. Not sure why anyone would break into a bakery, but the Alpha insisted that every business on pack territory be alarmed. But breakfast hours have passed and I don’t really need Martin here making a mess of things. I headed to my office, put all of my stuff down, grabbed my apron and headed to the kitchen to wash my hands and get started. ———————- Six o’clock couldn’t have came fast enough. My wolf has been on edge, I’m not sure what’s going on, but I don’t know how much more I can take in human form. Maybe she just needs to go for a good run. All things that can be worked out later I guess. I put everything away and grabbed my stuff before setting the alarm and walking out, locking the doors behind me. The walk to mom’s was peaceful. The sun is going down, the wind is carrying a chill, and the air smells fresh. Fall will always be my favorite season. Dinner was nice, mom made burgers and fries. Martin and I helped clean up. I gave her a quick peck on the cheek and headed home, Martin following along beside me. “Are you ready for Monday?” I asked him, breaking the silence. “Hell yeah! I’m ready for my friends to come home!” He laughed back. “That’s not what I meant and you know it.” I shot back. “I know what you meant. And the answer is the same. My friends, my brothers, they have been gone a long time. It will be nice to have them back home. This is where they belong.” He paused and took a slow breath. “As for what you’re referring to, yes. I’m ready for that too. I know once they get back things will change. We will have the ceremony, Connor will take his rightful place as Alpha. Joshua will take his place as Beta, and I will be given the title of Gamma. Officially that is. I’m not sure what you’re expecting to happen. I’m acting Gamma already Brookie.” He said calmly. “I don’t see how you do it. I don’t think I could be responsible for everything that you are. Accepting that title means no going back.” I just can’t see how someone can commit to that much sacrifice for other people. “Well it’s a good thing you’re not the future Gamma then huh? I’m ready for this. I was born for it Sis.” And I believed him. I knew he would do whatever it took for his people. We made it to the pack house and headed up the stairs to our rooms. Saying our goodnights, we went our separate ways. I shut my bedroom door and headed for the den. Kicking my shoes off, I flopped back on my couch. Ivy was pouting in my head, continuously pacing back and forth. ‘What in the name of the Goddess is going on with you?’ I asked her. I’m tired, exhausted would actually be a better word for it, and I just want to rest. ‘I’m not sure, I just feel anxious.’ She responded a little distantly. I could tell this was really affecting her too. Since all this weirdness started, I’ve noticed my body feels heavier. And there’s a fog in my mind I just can’t seem to clear up. If it’s affecting me like this, I’m sure she’s messed up about it as well. I let out a long sigh and I felt her perk up immediately, tail slowly starting to sway in my mind. She knows she has won. ‘How about a run sweet girl?’ The readiness pouring through our bond was the only confirmation I needed before heading over to my balcony doors and sliding them open. I slowly slid my top over my shoulders and pulled it off my head. Chill bumps quickly arose on my bare skin. The night air was cool, but not enough to make me uncomfortable. As a wolf, we are just naturally warm blooded. It would take a lot more than a nippy evening to send me back inside. Reaching my hands down to my jeans, I unbuttoned them and slid them down my legs before pulling off my bra and underwear. I pulled the hair tie from my bun and shook my hair loose before stepping up to my balcony ledge and diving off. This was my favorite part. The fall. I passed the second floor and then prepared my body for the shift. I felt my bones start to break and rearrange themselves. Thick brown hair started sprouting from my pale skin. I felt the familiar ache in my gums and my teeth growing longer, sharper. By the time I fell past the first floor, my paws were ready. I hit the ground with a stride and didn’t look back. Leaving the perimeter of the pack house, I let Ivy come forward and off she went. We ran. We ran for what felt like hours, and she still showed no sign of stopping, and I didn’t plan on making her. Whatever this funk is that we’re experiencing, we needed to let it out of her system. And out here there were no distractions, no birds chirping, no pups playing, no pack members crowding. Just me, her, and the moon playing together. By the time our paws started to slow, she was panting. My entire body ached, but a good ache. She needed this, hell I think we both did. My mind felt lighter but I could still tell there was something nagging at the back of our bond, But for now, that’s just where I was going to leave it. Returning to the pack house was slow and peaceful, the moon was starting to go down slowly and the eastern sky was starting to change from pitch black, to a dark blue. I knew any chance of sleep was gone. We trotted to the pack house entrance before I took control back and shifted back to human form. Nudity wasn’t anything to be embarrassed about around here, not to mention the only pack members out at this time were warriors on patrol, or kitchen staff starting on breakfast. I hurried up the stairs and to my room. Once inside I went back to the balcony and shut the doors. After a run like that I knew I needed a good bath so I headed to the bathroom to run the water. Once the tub was filled I climbed in. The water was nice and hot against my skin. I sunk down under the water, fully submerging my head, then coming back up for air. The bakery is closed today, everything is done and ready for the banquet tomorrow. That just leaves me having to go dress shopping with Mia. I think I dread that as much as the idea of this banquet. I sat in the bath soaking for some time before the water started to cool off. That was my cue to clean up and get out. I climbed out of the tub and grabbed my towel, wrapping it around me and heading to the bed. That warm bath and long run has me barely able to hold my eyes open. I grabbed my phone from the charger and sent a quick text to Mia. ‘Hey, I think I’m going to skip breakfast. Had a late night. Come get me when you’re ready to go into town<3’ Hopefully she waits until after lunch, but knowing Mia and her excitement about dress shopping, I’ll probably only have until after she showers and has breakfast. I’m looking at a short nap. I don’t even bother with getting dressed, I just pull back the blankets, throw my wet towel in the floor and cover up. Just before I dozed off I hear my phone buzz. Mia must have got my message. Oh well, I’ll see her when she comes and gets me I guess. I can’t hold my eyes open anymore. And with that, I fell asleep.
