Chapter 5: The Stars Begin to Shine The morning sun filtered into the small, cozy room, illuminating the dust motes dancing lazily in the air. Caelum hummed a cheerful tune as he folded the blanket he’d slept under, his bright demeanor filling the space. Across the room, Lucian lay sprawled on his cot, one arm draped dramatically over his face. “You’re awfully energetic this morning,” Lucian said flatly, his silver eyes narrowing against the sunlight. “Of course I am,” Caelum replied with a grin. “It’s another beautiful day to make the most of life!” Lucian groaned. “You sound insufferable.” Before Caelum could retort, a sharp knock echoed through the room. Startled, both boys turned toward the door. “Coming!” Caelum called, practically skipping to answer it. Standing there were the three adventurers they had met earlier: Roran, the red-haired swordsman; Lyra, the quick-witted archer; and Thad, the towering axeman. “Good morning, boys!” Roran said cheerfully. “Thought we’d drop by to see how you’re doing.” --- A Mischievous Exchange “We’re great!” Caelum replied enthusiastically. He cast a mischievous glance at Lucian and added, “Well, I’m great. I’m not sure about him.” Lucian raised an eyebrow. “What’s that supposed to mean?” “Oh, just that he might be struggling to adjust to life here,” Caelum teased, turning to the adventurers. “You know, yesterday we had to do some chores and—” Before he could finish, Lucian muttered something under his breath. A faint shimmer of magic surrounded Caelum, silencing him mid-sentence. His mouth moved, but no sound came out. Lyra blinked. “Is he okay?” Lucian smirked. “He’s fine. His mouth is just… tired of talking. It’s taking a break.” “Oh, that explains it,” Thad said with a chuckle. Lyra snorted. “You two are something else.” Roran clapped his hands together. “Well, now that we know you’re both still alive, we’ll leave you be. We’ve got tasks to pick up at the guild.” Lucian lifted the spell as Caelum blurted out, “Wait! Where are you going?” “To the adventurer’s guild,” Roran replied. “Just a routine visit.” “Can we come with you?” Caelum asked, his eyes sparkling with excitement. Roran hesitated. “It’s not really a place for kids...” Caelum turned to Lucian. “Come on, tell them we’ll behave!” Lucian crossed his arms. “No.” Caelum’s expression shifted into an exaggerated pout. He clasped his hands together and widened his eyes dramatically. “Pretty please?” Lucian groaned. “You’re unbearable.” The adventurers laughed. “Alright, alright,” Roran said. “But no trouble, got it?” “Got it!” Caelum chirped, practically bouncing with excitement. --- The Guild and Lucian’s Irritation The guild was bustling when they arrived, adventurers of all shapes and sizes crowding the large hall. Weapons clanged, laughter boomed, and the scent of roasted meat filled the air. As soon as Caelum and Lucian stepped inside, the noise began to die down. “It’s them!” someone whispered. “The kids who saved Roran and his team!” Caelum blinked in surprise as the crowd began to gather around them, murmuring words of admiration. Lucian, however, looked thoroughly unamused. “What is the meaning of this?” Lucian muttered under his breath, glaring at the growing crowd. “Relax,” Caelum said with a grin. “They’re just showing their appreciation.” Lucian’s silver eyes darkened, and a faint, ominous energy began to radiate from him. The air grew heavy, and the nearby adventurers hesitated, sensing something was off. Caelum quickly stepped forward. “Uh, excuse me, everyone! Can we get a little space, please?” The crowd began to disperse, though not without a few lingering glances. Lucian crossed his arms and muttered, “Idiots.” --- The Wolf Attack Just as things began to settle, the guild doors slammed open. A bloodied adventurer stumbled inside, gasping for breath. “Wolves!” he cried. “A whole pack of giant wolves is heading for the village!” The guild erupted into chaos as adventurers grabbed their weapons and rushed outside. “We have to help!” Caelum said, his blue eyes wide with urgency. Lucian frowned. “It’s not our problem. Besides, Roran told us to stay here.” Caelum’s expression hardened. “You’re unbelievable. Every time I think you care about anyone, you prove me wrong.” Without waiting for a reply, Caelum grabbed a rusty sword from a nearby rack and ran out. Lucian watched him go, his jaw tightening. “Stupid human,” he muttered, reluctantly following after him. --- A Fierce Battle The field outside the village was a nightmare. Wolves the size of small horses snarled and lunged at the adventurers, their red eyes glowing like embers. Caelum swung his sword with all the strength he could muster, his inexperience evident in his clumsy movements. “If I want to prove myself, I have to do this!” he shouted, though the wolves showed no signs of relenting. Soon, he found himself cornered, his arm bleeding from a shallow wound. His breath came in ragged gasps as exhaustion took hold. --- Lucian’s Power Unleashed A sudden, chilling aura spread across the battlefield. The wolves froze, their growls turning to whimpers. Lucian stepped forward, his silver eyes glowing with an unnatural light. “Who dares to harm what’s mine?” he growled, his voice low and dangerous. The wolves cowered, but Lucian wasn’t satisfied. Drawing a dark, jagged blade that seemed to pulse with power, he charged into the fray. His movements were fluid and deadly, each swing of his sword cutting through the wolves with precision. The surviving wolves fled, their terrified howls echoing into the forest. Lucian stood amidst the c*****e, his blade dripping with dark energy. --- A Moment of Truth Lucian approached Caelum, who was slumped on the ground, barely conscious. “You’re an i***t,” he muttered, kneeling beside him. Caelum blinked up at him, a faint smile on his lips. “We saved them, didn’t we?” Lucian rolled his eyes. “You’re unbelievable.” As Lucian helped him up, Caelum’s expression grew serious. “You’re not ordinary, are you?” Lucian froze, his gaze narrowing. “What are you talking about?” Caelum smirked weakly. “Don’t play dumb. The wolves were terrified of you. Normal people can’t do that.” Lucian looked away. “Believe whatever you want.” Caelum chuckled. “Ordinary, my ass.” --- Ending Scene Lucian carried Caelum back to the village, his usual scowl replaced by a faint frown of concern. As Caelum drifted off to sleep, he muttered, “Thanks, Lucian.” Lucian sighed. “You’re more trouble than you’re worth.” But as he looked at the boy in his arms, he couldn’t deny the strange warmth growing within him—a feeling he hadn’t allowed himself to feel in years.
