Chapter 6: The Path to the Unknown The sun was high in the sky, and the dusty road stretched endlessly before the two boys. The Human Prince, Caelum, walked ahead with a spring in his step, humming a cheerful tune. Behind him, the Demon Prince, Lucian, trailed with a perpetual scowl etched on his face. “I still don’t understand why we’re wandering like this,” Lucian muttered. Caelum grinned, turning back to him. “It’s called exploration! You wouldn’t get it, Your Highness.” Lucian rolled his eyes. “Exploration implies there’s a purpose. We’re just aimlessly walking like fools.” “Sometimes, aimless wandering is how you find purpose,” Caelum said with a wink. Lucian opened his mouth to reply, but a voice interrupted him. “You there, boys! Help an old woman, would you?” Both boys turned to see a frail figure sitting on a fallen log by the side of the road. She was wrapped in a simple cloak, her white hair escaping in wisps from under her hood. --- The Old Woman’s Request The Human Prince immediately jogged over. “What’s wrong, ma’am?” “Oh, just a tired old woman with a heavy bag,” she said, gesturing to a satchel on the ground. “Would you kind young men carry it to the other side of the stream for me?” Caelum bent down to pick up the bag without hesitation. “Of course!” Lucian crossed his arms. “We’re not errand boys.” Caelum shot him a look. “Lucian, come on. Don’t be like that.” The Demon Prince sighed dramatically but grabbed the bag anyway, lifting it as though it weighed nothing. The old woman smiled knowingly. “Thank you, boys. You’re stronger than you look,” she said as they helped her across the stream. “Tell me, where are you headed?” Caelum hesitated. “Well, nowhere in particular. We don’t really have a home or family anymore.” The old woman’s expression softened. “No home? No family? What about your schooling? Surely you’re students somewhere?” Lucian scoffed. “We don’t have money for that kind of thing.” “What?” she said, her eyes widening in genuine shock. “You don’t look like poor boys. You carry yourselves like the children of nobles.” “We’re not nobles!” Caelum said quickly, his cheeks flushing. Lucian smirked. “Far from it.” The woman tilted her head thoughtfully. “Do you boys want to study?” “Study with humans?” Lucian said, laughing bitterly. “What a joke.” “Well,” Caelum began hesitantly, “if we had the chance, it would be nice, but who would accept us?” The woman’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “I see true potential in you both—potential that could shape the future.” --- The Old Woman’s Offer She reached into her bag and pulled out a letter sealed with wax. “Go to the capital city of Valeria in the kingdom of Eryndor. It’s the heart of the realm, where all the kingdoms meet. Show this letter to the staff at the Royal Academy. They’ll know what to do.” The boys exchanged skeptical glances. “Why would they listen to us?” Lucian asked bluntly. The old woman smiled. “Because I am Dean Miranda Ethel, and my word carries weight.” “Why are you helping us?” Caelum asked softly. “Because you remind me of something important,” she said cryptically. “Now go. Your journey is just beginning.” --- The Decision Back in the village, the boys debated what to do. “We’re not doing this,” Lucian said firmly. “Studying with humans? Ridiculous.” Caelum’s blue eyes shone with excitement. “But think about it, Lucian! We’ll meet so many people and learn so much.” Lucian snorted. “Learn what? How to smile and pretend to care?” Caelum’s expression darkened. “What’s the point of arguing with you? It’s not like you care about anything.” “I care about survival,” Lucian said coldly. Caelum clenched his fists. “Well, I care about more than that! I want to be someone who matters, someone who can protect others.” Lucian’s silver eyes flicked to Caelum, noticing the faint shimmer of tears in his eyes. He sighed. “Fine. If it’ll shut you up, we’ll go to this academy.” Caelum beamed. “You won’t regret this!” Lucian muttered under his breath, “I already do.” --- Farewell to the Village The next morning, the adventurers who had cared for the boys gathered to see them off. “We’ll miss you, boys,” the red-haired leader said, clapping Caelum on the shoulder. “Don’t forget—if you ever need anything, this village will always welcome you.” “Thank you for everything,” Caelum said sincerely. Lucian, standing off to the side, gave a small nod. --- Arrival at the Capital The capital of Valeria was unlike anything they had ever seen. The city sprawled out in every direction, its streets bustling with people from all walks of life. Towering spires and domed buildings glistened in the sunlight, and the high walls surrounding the city gave it an air of majesty and security. “This place is huge,” Caelum whispered, his eyes wide. “It’s loud,” Lucian grumbled, his silver eyes scanning the crowd. They made their way to the Royal Academy, following the directions Miranda had given them. The school’s gates were grand, flanked by towering statues of warriors and scholars. “This is it,” Caelum said, his voice filled with awe. --- The Entrance Exam The staff at the academy were initially skeptical, but the mention of Miranda’s name changed everything. The boys were allowed to take the entrance exams, which included tests in swordsmanship, magic, and general knowledge. Lucian excelled in every category, his demonic strength and sharp mind giving him an edge. Afterward, Caelum asked, “How did you do so well on the written test? It was all about human history!” Lucian smirked. “If you want to know your enemies, you learn their history. It’s common sense.” “Enemies?” Caelum repeated, raising an eyebrow. “You’re full of surprises.” --- The Dean Revealed After their exams, they were summoned to the dean’s office. When they entered, their jaws dropped. “Welcome,” Miranda said, smiling warmly. “I see you’ve done well.” “You’re the dean?” Caelum asked, his eyes wide. “I told you I was important,” Miranda replied with a chuckle. Lucian crossed his arms. “Why didn’t you just tell us outright?” “Where’s the fun in that?” she teased. --- Ending Scene That night, as they settled into their dormitory, Caelum turned to Lucian. “Thanks for coming here with me.” Lucian smirked. “Don’t mention it. Ever.” Caelum extended his hand. “Promise me we’ll stick together. No matter what happens.” Lucian hesitated, then took his hand. “Fine. But if we die, we die together.” Caelum grinned. “Deal.” As the stars twinkled outside their window, the two boys cemented a bond that would shape their destinies forever.
