The morning after Elena's confession, Maya woke up with a smile she couldn't explain.
Actually, she could explain it.
She just didn't know how to put it into words.
For months, Elena had been the person she secretly missed too much, cared about too deeply, and thought about far too often.
Now the truth was finally out.
They liked each other.
They wanted to see where things could go.
Together.
Maya reached for her phone.
There was already a message waiting.
Elena: Good morning.
Maya smiled.
Maya: Good morning.
A second message appeared.
Elena: I still can't believe yesterday happened.
Maya: Me neither.
Elena: Are we really doing this?
Maya stared at the question.
Then typed:
Maya: I think we are.
Three dots appeared.
Elena: Then good morning, girlfriend.
Maya covered her face with her pillow.
"Elena!"
She laughed despite herself.
She typed back.
Maya: Don't get too excited.
Elena: Too late.
Maya smiled at the screen.
Something about the word girlfriend felt strange.
Not bad.
Just new.
They were no longer pretending that what existed between them was only friendship.
There was something more now.
Something real.
Something they had to learn.
---
Over the next few weeks, Maya and Elena slowly settled into their new relationship.
They didn't make a big announcement.
They didn't feel the need to explain themselves to everyone.
They simply became more intentional with each other.
Elena would meet Maya after class.
Maya would bring Elena coffee when she knew she had a long day.
They shared jokes, stories, and little moments that didn't seem important to anyone else.
One Saturday afternoon, they sat at the café again.
The same table.
The same chairs.
But everything felt different.
Elena was reading something on her phone.
Maya watched her.
"What?"
Elena looked up.
"What what?"
"Why are you staring at me?"
"I'm not."
"You are."
Maya smiled.
"I like looking at you."
Elena raised an eyebrow.
"Since when?"
"Since forever."
Elena's expression softened.
"That's dangerous."
"Why?"
"Because I'm going to start believing you."
Maya laughed.
"Good."
Elena reached across the table and gently tapped Maya's hand.
"I missed this place."
"So did I."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Even without me?"
Maya shook her head.
"No."
Elena smiled.
"Good answer."
They laughed.
For a while, everything felt perfect.
But perfect things rarely stay that way.
---
The problem started with a message.
It wasn't even an important message.
At least, Maya didn't think it should have been.
Elena had started working with a small writing group after returning from her program.
One of the members was Sofia.
The same Sofia Maya had heard about before.
Sofia was talented.
Confident.
Funny.
And, according to Elena, very helpful.
Maya had no reason to dislike her.
But lately, Sofia seemed to appear in almost every conversation.
"Sofia sent me this."
"Sofia had an idea for the story."
"Sofia thinks I should submit this."
"Sofia said..."
Maya listened.
She tried not to let it bother her.
Until one evening, Elena cancelled their plans.
"I'm sorry," Elena said over the phone. "I have to help Sofia with something."
Maya went quiet.
"Again?"
Elena noticed the change in her voice.
"What does that mean?"
"Nothing."
"Maya."
"I'm fine."
"You don't sound fine."
Maya sighed.
"I just thought we were supposed to spend tonight together."
"We can tomorrow."
"You said that yesterday."
"I know, but this is important."
Maya swallowed.
"Right."
Elena became quiet.
"Maya, what's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"You're doing that thing again."
"What thing?"
"You're saying you're fine when you're clearly not."
Maya didn't answer.
Elena sighed.
"I'll call you later."
"Okay."
The call ended.
Maya stared at her phone.
She immediately regretted the conversation.
Maybe she was being unreasonable.
Maybe she was expecting too much.
Maybe she was simply scared.
She had waited so long to have Elena close again.
And now that she finally did, she was afraid of losing her.
---
The next day, Elena came to see her.
Maya knew immediately that something was wrong.
"You've been avoiding me."
"I haven't."
"You didn't answer my messages."
"I was busy."
"Maya."
She looked away.
Elena took a breath.
"Please tell me what's happening."
Maya finally looked at her.
"Do you like Sofia?"
Elena blinked.
"What?"
"You heard me."
Elena looked genuinely surprised.
"Where did that come from?"
"You talk about her all the time."
"She's my friend."
"You spend a lot of time with her."
"Because we work together."
"And you cancelled on me for her."
"Because she needed help."
Maya folded her arms.
"You always have a reason."
Elena stared at her.
"So this is jealousy?"
Maya's face became warm.
"Maybe."
Elena sighed.
"Maya, I can't spend every minute proving that I choose you."
"I didn't ask you to."
"But that's what this feels like."
Silence.
The words hurt.
Maya looked down.
"I don't want to be difficult."
"I never said you were difficult."
"But you think I am."
"No."
Elena softened.
"I think you're scared."
Maya looked at her.
"And maybe you're right."
Elena stepped closer.
"But being scared doesn't mean you get to decide what I'm feeling."
"I know."
"And I don't want Sofia."
Maya said nothing.
"I want you."
Maya's eyes filled with emotion.
"Then why does it feel like I'm always waiting for you?"
Elena didn't have an immediate answer.
That silence hurt more than anything.
Finally, she whispered,
"Maybe I've been trying so hard to balance everything that I forgot to make you feel like a priority."
Maya looked at her.
"I don't need to be your whole world."
"I know."
"I just want to know that I matter."
Elena stepped closer.
"You matter more than you know."
Maya looked away.
"I'm sorry."
"So am I."
They stood there quietly.
Neither knew exactly how to fix it.
But neither wanted to walk away.
---
That evening, Elena sent Maya a message.
Elena: Can I see you tomorrow?
Maya hesitated.
Then replied.
Maya: Yes.
The following afternoon, Elena brought Maya to the park where they had first talked about their dreams.
They sat beneath a large tree.
Elena pulled something from her bag.
A notebook.
She handed it to Maya.
"What is this?"
"Open it."
Maya did.
The first page contained a list.
Things I Don't Want Maya to Ever Doubt:
1. I choose you.
2. I trust you.
3. I believe in you.
4. I am proud of you.
5. You can tell me when you're scared.
6. You don't have to compete with anyone for my attention.
7. I want us to communicate instead of assuming.
8. I don't expect us to be perfect.
9. I want to learn you.
10. I want you to learn me.
Maya read the list twice.
Then looked at Elena.
"You wrote this?"
"Last night."
"Why?"
"Because I realized something."
"What?"
"Being in love with someone isn't enough."
Maya's eyes widened slightly.
Elena continued.
"You have to learn how to love them properly."
Maya smiled.
"And you're still learning?"
"Definitely."
She laughed.
"So am I."
Maya closed the notebook.
"I don't want us to become one of those couples who stop talking when something hurts."
"Neither do I."
"Then we promise?"
Elena held out her hand.
"Promise."
Maya placed her hand in Elena's.
Their fingers intertwined.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Maya smiled.
"You know something?"
"What?"
"I think we're going to be okay."
Elena smiled back.
"I think so too."
---
That night, Maya lay in bed reading Elena's list again.
She stopped at number ten.
I want you to learn me.
It made her think.
Maybe that was what love really was.
Not knowing everything about someone immediately.
Not always getting things right.
Not never arguing.
Maybe love was choosing to understand.
Choosing to listen.
Choosing to stay.
Her phone buzzed.
Elena: Are you awake?
Maya smiled.
Maya: Yes.
Elena: I have one more thing to say.
Maya: What?
A pause.
Then:
Elena: I love you.
Maya stared at the screen.
Those three words were simple.
But they carried everything.
The fear.
The distance.
The waiting.
The confession.
The misunderstanding.
And the choice to stay.
Maya smiled.
Then typed the words she'd been waiting to say.
Maya: I love you too.
She placed her phone beside her.
For the first time, saying it didn't feel frightening.
It felt right.
But neither of them knew that the next few weeks would bring a decision that would test everything they'd just promised each other.
Because Elena had been offered something.
Something she had dreamed about for years.
And accepting it could change the future they had only just begun building.
