Chapter 2
Natalie's POV
The five of us walk into the school, Oakheart High, laughing and joking. Well, Everleigh and the twins are primarily making the jokes. Liam and I were talking about the books we had been reading over the summer.
“Hi Liam” Cassie walks up to us with her group of clones. “How was your summer? Hope you didn’t miss me too much.” Sending me a glare, then going back to batting her fake eyelashes at Liam.
“I mean, it was more peaceful over the summer, if that’s what you mean” Asher remarks, rolling his eyes.
I groan internally. Everleigh rolls her eyes and motions for me to come over to her and the twins. I glance at Liam who looks like he would rather be anywhere else. I mouth “sorry” and walk over to where Sage and Everleigh are waiting. Asher trades me places. Asher and Liam seem to be the only ones of our group that Cassie likes. Sage has made it clear to her that he can’t stand her so she leaves him alone. Luckily enough she doesn’t bully him, though I think that’s because she has a thing for Asher and Liam. They’re too nice to tell her to piss off, well Liam is. Cassie seems to just take Asher’s rude remarks as him flirting with her.
“Hey Asher,” Sadie says shyly with a slight wave. “How are you today?
Sadie isn’t as bad as the rest of them. How she ended up in Cassie’s group of brainless followers, well my guess is because of her family name. The Monroe’s. They’re one of the bigger names in town. However she’s not stuck up or a jerk. She’s a more quiet, almost mousy kind of person. About 5’2”, long dirty blond hair that she normally leaves down, and pale blue eyes, she’s pretty and really smart. She’s one of the top five in our class. I think she’ll be valedictorian.
Asher softens and smiles at her. “I’m good. How are you doing, Sadie?”
Sadie blushes, brushes her hair behind her ear, and quietly says “I’m doing ok.”
Cassie looks almost annoyed by the attention Asher always gives Sadie. I think they even went out on a couple of dates this summer. At least, that’s what Sage told us. He also said that Sadie’s pretty introverted and that they were keeping whatever it was they had more lowkey.
Cassie finally leaves after whispering something to Liam. Whatever it was made him uncomfortable.
“Bye Liam, I’ll see you later,” Cassie calls over her shoulder, blowing Liam a kiss.
Her and her clones disappear down the hallway that is becoming quickly crowded. Sadie, Asher, and Liam walk back over to us. Asher pulls Sadie closer to him to help her avoid getting knocked over by one of the football players.
“Hey, watch it jackass!”
“f**k off Boone!”
Liam shakes his head and turns back to us, “Nat, I don’t know how you live with her.”
I shrug and pull my class schedule out of my bag.
“Who else has English first period?”
“Ugh with Mr. Cliffe?” Everleigh groans.
I glance back at my schedule, “Yep.”
Sage looks at his then smiles at Everleigh and me. “Well hey, at least we’re all in class together, so maybe it won’t be so bad.”
“That’s true.” We start to follow Sage towards first period. Behind his back, I wiggle my eyebrows at Evie. She in turn flips me off, causing me to laugh.
“Hey, wait for me guys!” Liam calls after us.
He catches up, sounding slightly out of breath, “ I have Cliffe first period too.”
Evie winks at me and I flip her off. Now it’s her turn to laugh as I feel my cheeks redden in embarrassment.
Liam looks at me concerned,“You ok Nat?”
I smile at him, “Yea, I’m ok. You know how Evie is.”
“Yea, just up to her regular antics?”
“Always.”
Cassie, followed by Jen, Cleo, and Brittany, skip third period and hide out behind the school.
Cassandra’s POV
“Does anyone have a light?” I ask.
“Here you go Cass,” Cleo hands me a rose gold lighter.
“Thanks.” I light my cigarette then pass the lighter to Jen.
“So what do you guys think about Sadie and Asher being a thing?’ Brittany asks.
“I don’t think it’ll last. Sadie is just a fling. She’s not good enough to be anything more,” Jen states, lighting her own cigarette.
“I think that makes her a traitor. I think we should kick her from the group. She’s obviously not loyal,” Cleo chimes in. “What do you think, Cass?”
“I think that’s a great idea, Cleo. After all, we don’t need that kind of trashiness in our group.”
“I heard Asher’s only with her because she slept with him on the first date,”Brittany adds.
“Really, that prude? You think she actually did it?” Jen looks over at Brittany in disbelief.
I stopped listening as they continued to talk about that traitor Sadie. I can’t believe she would go after Asher. She knew if I couldn’t get Liam, for whatever reason, that I wanted Asher. All the girls knew that Asher and Liam were off limits for them to pursue. Natalie had already managed to get Everleigh to hang out with her instead of us. And Sage is like a lost puppy when it comes to Everleigh. Now even Liam would rather follow after my stupid sister. I don’t know what they see in her. With a sigh, I turn my attention back to what the girls were saying.
“Did you see the way Liam was looking at Natalie?” Brittany asks.
“Do you want us to humiliate her during lunch? We could trip her and dump lunch all over her in front of everyone,” Jen suggests, smiling wickedly.
“No. That will just upset Liam. For now we will just bide our time. After all, I always get what I want.”
