Jahira’s POV.
“Happy wedding anniversary!”
The crowd yelled as the lights turned on, making me gasp in shock. The last thing I expected to meet at home was a surprise party, especially for my anniversary.
I had no plans of celebrating the day because I didn't recall it for anything good. That was why I whiled away time at Nyx's place.
And I was happy when Raymond didn't wish me or anything, I hoped he'd keep it like that but judging from the smiling crowd and the decorations around, I thought wrong.
Raymond stepped out from the crowd, holding a gift bag as he approached me. My jaws clenched but I spread my lips into a smile as his hands slid around my waist. Even his touch felt distant, and I badly wanted to step out of his grip but that would ruin the image of a “power couple” that we had.
“Happy wedding anniversary baby,” He muttered, placing his lips onto mine.
Even though the kiss was deep, all I felt was immense irritation. The only thing replaying in my mind were the photos of him kissing and touching his secretary so I quickly broke the kiss.
His smile remained plastered on his lips, and though others couldn't notice that it was fake, I could see through it.
He leaned in, “Do you like the surprise?”
Of course not, I hate this stupid show where I have to pretend to be madly in love with you!
“Yes, it's really nice,” I replied, biting back the words I really meant to say.
Right after that, Raymond stopped a waiter, taking two glasses off from the tray and passing one to me.
I took it and then he lifted his glass above his head, “To many more years with my amazing wife. Cheers!”
The crowd rumbled with applause as I clinked my glass with Raymond's. And with that, the party started and everyone occasionally stepped forward, congratulating me on my third year with Raymond.
“You know, it's so rare to see people stick in marriages these days,” A woman commented, looking up dreamily.
My insides twisted with annoyance but I kept a straight face.
“That's very true. I just admire their relationship, and I wish I'd find a man who loves me like Raymond loves you,”
If she meant a man who didn't come home for the past two days under the pretext of a business meeting, and then showed up on the day of our wedding anniversary for a surprise party, then sure.
The comments and praises didn't stop coming in and I was beginning to lose my patience.
“Excuse me ladies, I'd like to go speak with my husband,”I smiled, faking the sheepish look and they giggled, approving my leave.
I found Raymond sharing a drink with some of his business men and I tugged at his arm, gesturing to have a word. He announced his leave and stepped to the side of the room with me.
“What the hell is this s**t show that you're putting on?” I queried him, trying to keep my voice at the lowest.
His expression moved from cheerful to icy, the kind that I was familiar with.
“Jahira,I don't have time for your unnecessary questions. You better keep that smile until the end of the party, then we can talk about this.”
“No, I won't. Not until you tell me since when you started caring about anniversaries. We both know that we're better off not celebrating s**t. Tell me why you did this right now,” I insisted, crossing my arms.
His face hardened as he looked around, “One of my business associates is looking to give me a huge contract and he's a fan of happy marriages. So I'm–”
I clicked my tongue, “I knew it. I know you're too nonchalant to care about this.”
The words rolled off my mouth with annoyance but my insides were squirming with disappointment. A little part of me had hoped that this wasn't a facade to impress the public like our many other dates but I was proven wrong yet again.
He was just using this for his own benefits.
He parted his lips to speak when a hand tapped his shoulders, making him turn around and there she was.
His little secretary, or should I call her his mistress?
She was clad in an orange bodycon dress that stopped at her thighs and her black hair fell over shoulders in fluffy waves.
“Happy anniversary sir,” She said, smiling at him with seductive eyes.
My brows arched immediately and it took a lot of rational thoughts to not launch a slap across her face.
Raymond shook hands with her, returning the seductive look.
“You look really good,” He commented, and my blood boiled.
Really?
“Babe, we weren't done talking,” I gritted out and he turned to me, frowning like I'd interrupted his session with the doll-looking lady.
“We can talk later. You should change into something nice, we'd be having a dance soon,” He tapped his hands on my shoulder and I forced a smile and walked away.
When I rounded up the stairs, I caught a glimpse of Raymond and his secretary smiling so hard and that sent rage pumping through my veins.
Suddenly, all the guilt I'd been feeling about sleeping with Nelson felt justified. If he thought he could hurt me like that, then I could do the same.
Speaking of Nelson, I'd not seen him for the past two days, and I was beginning to think he must be avoiding me cause only the other driver was available to take me out.
That made my heart sink, I needed to see him.
I also needed to ask him about the call from that night.
I strode towards our bedroom, debating whether or not to change into a better dress, or just fall asleep and ignore Raymond's orders.
However, when I got to my room, I heard footsteps in the room and my heart skipped a beat.
Who was in there? The only people permitted to enter our bedroom were Raymond's family members and I wasn't even cool with that.
Curious to know who it was, I pushed the door open.
A gasp escaped my lips as I set eyes on the figure, “You.”
