Fifteen STEVE AND I MANAGE to wrestle the trunk down the staircase and out to the trunk of my car. After thanking him, Steve says, “Listen, I’m more than happy to help anytime I can, Father. But I don’t want you to worry about me and Bridget. We’re just friends.” “I hope you understand, Steve,” I say, “that I never thought you’d do something deliberately. You’re a good man, and I know you’d never hurt her like that. I just wanted to make sure she didn’t hurt herself, you know?” Steve laughs. “I know. And I tell you what—if she ever throws herself at me, you’ll be the first to know.” “Well,” I say, “I doubt that will happen.
