Chapter 5

1152 Words
Emily paced in the confines of the Williams mansion, her breath shallow as frustration coursed through her veins. The echo of her heels against the polished marble floor amplified her growing anxiety. She hadn’t seen Alexander since the argument the previous night, and every moment since had been an agonizing wait for the other shoe to drop. “I shouldn’t be here,” she muttered under her breath, running a hand through her hair. “This isn’t my life—it’s his cage.” Her thoughts were interrupted by heavy footsteps approaching from the corridor. She turned sharply, her pulse quickening. When Alexander appeared in the doorway, she froze, her gaze locking with his. He stood tall, his cold blue eyes scrutinizing her every move, his tailored suit immaculate as always. But there was something else—an intensity that sent a shiver down her spine. “I see you’re restless,” Alexander said, his voice calm yet laced with a dangerous undertone. Emily folded her arms, refusing to cower under his gaze. “I’m not a prisoner, Alexander. Or is that how you see this arrangement?” He stepped closer, the air between them growing heavier with each step. “You’re not a prisoner, Emily. But you are mine.” Her jaw tightened as she fought to keep her composure. “I didn’t choose this. You forced me into this nightmare.” Alexander tilted his head, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “Nightmare? Is that how you see living in luxury, having every comfort at your fingertips?” “You think this is about money?” she shot back, her voice rising. “You can’t buy control over my life, Alexander.” He chuckled, the sound low and mocking. “Control, my dear, is earned. And right now, your choices are limited. I suggest you make peace with that.” Emily took a step back, her chest heaving as anger and helplessness collided within her. “You can’t keep me like this forever.” Alexander’s expression darkened, his smirk vanishing. “Watch me.” Before she could respond, a knock at the door broke the tension. A maid peeked inside, her face pale. “Sir, there’s a man outside demanding to see Mrs. Williams.” Emily’s heart stopped. She didn’t need to ask who it was—she already knew. Alexander’s gaze snapped to her, suspicion flaring in his eyes. “A man?” he repeated, his tone icy. “Yes, sir,” the maid stammered. “He says it’s urgent.” Emily’s pulse raced as Alexander’s gaze bore into her, sharp and unforgiving. “Who is he?” She hesitated, her mind scrambling for an explanation that wouldn’t worsen the situation. “I... I don’t know.” His lips pressed into a thin line, his jaw tightening. “Stay here.” Without waiting for a response, Alexander brushed past her, his presence a storm sweeping through the room. Emily stood frozen for a moment before her instincts kicked in. She couldn’t let Alexander confront Ben—if it really was him—alone. Heart pounding, she followed at a distance, keeping to the shadows as she trailed him down the grand staircase. At the front door, she caught a glimpse of Ben, his face determined as he squared off with one of Alexander’s guards. Her breath hitched. “I’m not leaving until I see her,” Ben said firmly, his voice carrying through the hall. Alexander stepped into view, his posture radiating authority. “And who do you think you are, making demands at my door?” Ben’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t back down. “I’m someone who cares about her. More than you ever will.” Alexander’s laughter was cold, devoid of humor. “Brave words for a man who doesn’t know his place.” “I know exactly where I stand,” Ben retorted, his eyes blazing. “Do you?” From her hiding spot, Emily’s heart twisted. She wanted to rush forward, to stop this confrontation before it spiraled further out of control. But fear rooted her in place. Alexander took a deliberate step forward, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper. “You have no idea who you’re dealing with.” Ben didn’t flinch. “Neither do you.” The tension crackled like a live wire, and Emily knew she had to intervene. Taking a deep breath, she stepped out of the shadows. “Stop!” she called, her voice trembling but loud enough to cut through the heated exchange. Both men turned to her, their expressions starkly different—Ben’s filled with relief, Alexander’s with icy fury. “What do you think you’re doing, Emily?” Alexander’s voice was calm, but the warning in his tone was unmistakable. Emily’s heart pounded as she forced herself to meet his gaze. “Let him go, Alexander. He doesn’t belong here.” Alexander’s eyes narrowed, his gaze flicking between her and Ben. “Interesting,” he said slowly, his tone laced with suspicion. “Very interesting.” Ben took a step forward, his hand reaching out slightly. “Emily—” “Don’t,” Alexander barked, cutting him off. His glare was like a blade, sharp and unforgiving. “You’ve already overstepped.” Emily stepped between them, her palms raised as if to create an invisible barrier. “This ends here. Ben, please leave. I’ll handle this.” “No,” Ben said firmly, his eyes locked on hers. “I’m not leaving you with him.” Alexander’s lips curled into a smirk, though his eyes remained cold. “Touching. But unnecessary. Emily knows exactly where she belongs.” Emily’s stomach twisted as Alexander’s words sank in. She turned to Ben, her voice soft but pleading. “Please, Ben. Go.” For a moment, Ben looked as though he might argue, but then his shoulders slumped in defeat. He shot Alexander one last glare before turning to leave, his footsteps heavy as they echoed down the driveway. Alexander watched him go, his expression unreadable. Once Ben was out of sight, he turned to Emily, his smirk returning. “We’ll talk about this later,” he said, his tone dripping with menace. Emily’s breath caught as he walked past her, the weight of his presence suffocating. She felt the walls of her cage closing in once more, her chest tightening with the knowledge that Alexander would never let this go. She sank into a nearby chair, her head in her hands. The confrontation had only made things worse. The sound of a faint vibration pulled her from her thoughts. She glanced toward the table, her phone lighting up with a single message from an unknown number: “You’re not safe there. Be ready.” Emily’s heart stopped. She stared at the screen, her hands trembling. And then the power in the mansion went out.
