The Line Between Two Bonds

911 Words
Liora didn’t answer Kael’s name aloud. She didn’t even fully think it. But her body reacted anyway. A sharp, involuntary pulse shot through her chest, like something inside her had heard him and turned its head. She staggered slightly. Darius’s hand tightened just enough on her arm to steady her again. “Stop reacting to it,” he said calmly. Liora clenched her jaw. “I’m not choosing this!” “I didn’t say you were choosing it,” he replied. That made her glare at him. But the anger didn’t fully hold. Because something worse was happening now. The two sensations weren’t just present anymore. They were responding to each other. Kael’s pull surged faintly. Darius’s presence stabilized it immediately. Then Kael’s pull pushed harder again. Like something refusing to disappear. Liora pressed a hand to her chest. “It feels like…” she whispered, struggling for words, “like I’m being torn.” Darius studied her carefully. “Yes,” he said simply. That answer made her freeze. “…Yes?” He nodded once. “The bond is dividing its response between two anchors.” “Anchors?” she repeated sharply. Darius’s gaze darkened slightly. “You.” Silence dropped heavy between them. Liora took a step back instinctively. “That’s not possible,” she said quickly. “A mate bond doesn’t—” “Doesn’t survive rejection like this?” he interrupted. She hesitated. Because that was exactly what she meant. Darius turned slightly toward the glowing symbols beneath her feet. “This one did not simply reject,” he said. “It fractured something already unstable.” Liora swallowed. “And you keep saying unstable like that explains everything,” she muttered. “It explains enough,” he replied. That wasn’t comforting at all. Another pulse hit her. This one sharper. She gasped. The glow under her skin flickered again. But this time, it didn’t feel chaotic. It felt responsive. Like something inside her was trying to organize itself around pressure. Darius noticed immediately. His eyes narrowed slightly. “…It is learning,” he murmured. Liora looked up sharply. “What is learning?” He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he stepped closer. The moment he did, the pain in her chest eased slightly again. Not gone. But quieter. Controlled. Her breath slowed without her permission. “…Why does it stop when you’re near?” she asked, quieter now. Darius held her gaze. “That is what we need to understand,” he said. Before she could respond— A distant emotional surge hit her again. Kael. This time, not just calling her name. Confusion. Frustration. Something sharper underneath. Regret. Liora froze completely. Her fingers curled slightly. And for the first time— The pull didn’t feel like love. It felt like unfinished damage. “…He’s angry,” she whispered without thinking. Darius’s expression shifted slightly. “Not anger,” he corrected. Liora frowned. “Then what?” “Disruption,” he said. That word made her pause. Disruption. Not emotion. Not connection. Interference. As if Kael’s presence in the bond was no longer natural. Just leftover energy refusing to die. Liora’s chest tightened again—but differently this time. Less painful. More distant. “…It’s fading,” she whispered. Darius looked at her sharply. “Which one?” he asked. She hesitated. Because she could feel it now. The difference. Kael’s pull wasn’t as sharp anymore. Still there. But weaker. Like something that was slowly losing its grip. Darius stepped back slightly. “And the other?” he asked. Liora turned toward him before she even realized. And that was when she felt it. Stronger. Steadier. Not overwhelming. But present in a way that didn’t break her apart. She swallowed. “…Yours is not fading,” she admitted quietly. Darius didn’t react immediately. But something in his eyes deepened slightly. “As expected,” he said. Liora frowned. “That doesn’t answer anything.” “It answers the direction,” he corrected. She stared at him. “The direction of what?” Darius didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he turned back toward the circular chamber. “Your awakening is choosing stability,” he said finally. Liora stiffened. “I am not choosing anything.” “You are not conscious of it,” he corrected again. That frustrated her. Everything about him was certainty layered over mystery. Like he already knew the outcome and was just watching it unfold. Another pulse hit her—but weaker again. Kael. Still there. But no longer pulling as hard. Liora’s throat tightened slightly. “What happens when it disappears completely?” she asked quietly. Darius paused. Long enough for her to feel the weight of the answer before he gave it. “Then it becomes severed,” he said. Liora’s breath slowed. “…And him?” she asked softly. Darius looked at her directly. “He will remain what he has always been,” he said. A pause. Then— “Your past.” Silence fell again. But this time, it didn’t feel like loss. It felt like change already in motion. Far away— Kael suddenly stopped again. But this time, the pain didn’t sharpen. It dulled. His hand lowered slowly from his chest. His expression tightened. “…It’s weaker,” he whispered. Not gone. But slipping. And for the first time since rejecting her— Kael realized something terrifying. He wasn’t losing control of her. He was losing access.
