Working for Darian was worlds different from working at the body shop. For starters, there weren’t a lot of walk-in customers—people who stopped by the woodshop already had something in mind before coming inside, so they usually didn’t linger once they placed an order. Nobody stopped in on impulse, like they did at the auto shop, when they noticed they were due for a state inspection or oil change. Nobody browsed, the way they did in the small convenience store in the front part of Mack’s, loitering over chocolate candy bars and packs of bubble gum. No kids hung out by the curb, watching the hot rods roll in to be detailed. No one stopped by the use the bathroom.
