Barry’s visits to Bess became semi-regular events. When he drove back from town, he’d check the time, and if it was likely Frank would be working, he’d drive up to the ranch house. Bess and he would talk and he’d cook a meal. Just before leaving he’d remind Bess that she could call him if she needed him. But they both knew she never would—hence his frequent visits.
On one trip to town, Barry was riding with Jake, who needed a part for the tractor.
While Barry loved being with his men, he also enjoyed the times he was able to spend with them individually. Recently Jimmy’s focus had been on his mother. He was worried she wasn’t getting better. Barry, too, thought her progress was slower than it should be. However, he’d reminded Jimmy that people healed at different rates.
