Raphael drove wildly on the road, after leaving the police station. Nothing seemed right in the world anymore. He pulled up to his driveway, unable to move. His mind played Emily's statement over and over again. Tears formed in his eyes and rolled down. Memories of his father coming back to him freshly mixed with memories of him and Emily. None of it seemed real anymore. Slowly, in the sadness and heavy heart that weighed his soul down to the abyss of grief, his eyes gave and slowly closed as he fell asleep in his car. Rafael woke up the following day disoriented, his eyes swollen. He had nightmares about all all the things he had learnt the previous day. Raphael sat down for a few more minutes in his car trying to think. Why was it so difficult for him to accept the truth? Emily confessed to being involved in his father's murder. For all he knew, she wasn't even who she seemed to be. She was dangerous. Many thoughts crossed his mind, yet through all these thoughts, he knew one thing for sure. He was going to find out who she was, her past and her involvement with his father's murder. It was the only way he was going to have his peace.
Raphael drove back to the police station without ever stepping foot outside his car. He walked straight to detective Cavanaugh's office. He opened the door and went in. "Hey Mr Montero". Detective Kavanagh said, "Are you okay? I called out to you before you left yesterday.", the detective asked. "I know I had to go do something." Raphael replied ". Oh okay, so what can I do for you now?" Detective Cavanaugh asked. "I need to speak to her, Emily", Raphael replied, "Fine", detective Cavanaugh said, looking straight at him, nodding his head solemnly. Detective Cavanaugh set up the meeting and Raphael was there sitting on a chair. He had sat on the previous day, waiting in anticipation. He had lots of questions and he was going to get his answers. Emily stepped into the room moments later, escorted by a policeman and sat opposite him. He looked at her long and hard. There was no going back now. There was no going around either. The only way out of this was through it. He had to know.
Rafael and Emily stared at each other for what felt like an eternity. "You have questions for me?", Emily asked. "Matter of fact, I do. How were you involved in my father's death? I want only the truth". Rafael said, looking straight up at Emily. Emily turned her head and looked away, not wanting to meet his gaze. Raphael could see the pain clearly visible on her face. Finally, she started talking. "When I was still just out of high school, I used to move with some friends and we used to go out and party, do drugs and all those things I thought was fun at that time, sneaking around and feeling like a super villain. No more than that, until one of us got involved with some guys, they told him they were going to rob a bank and that they had every aspect of it covered. They were just going to go in and get what they wanted and go out. No one was going to get hurt. I tried to convince him not to go with them. I did. I tried to convince him otherwise, but he couldn't turn down the money they were offering. They offered him 50,000 dollars. He was determined to get the money.
So I followed him on the day they were to go. No one was supposed to get hurt, but one of them became really impatient. At that moment, he lost control. That was when everything happened. That person was my friend. I was just outside watching to see what was going to happen. That was when I saw them leaving. Some seconds later, I saw my friend coming out. He had been left at the scene. I didn't know what was going on, so I drove up to him and helped him escape. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry". Emily said. "And how did the police not catch you immediately?" Raphael asked. "I have no idea, sincerely they just never traced it to us until now" Emily replied. "After everything that happened, why didn't you go to the police and tell them everything?" Raphael asked. "I was afraid", Emily replied "I had just helped a murderer escape what was I supposed to tell them and by the way my friend, ran off that night, I didn't know what to do", Emily said, she bend her head down and close her eyes, the guilt she felt almost enough to kill her. Raphael stood up, pacing about the room, his hands on his waist. " I'm sorry Raphael. I truly am". Emily said. He looked at her and stood still, trying to process everything. " Is this the whole truth? Nothing else I need to know?" Rafael asked. "That is all. Nothing else". Emily replied in a low voice. He stared at her long and hard. " I'll speak to the detective",Rafael said before leaving the room. Raphael was overwhelmed with different emotions. On one hand, he was sad and angry and, on the other hand, he felt compassion. He knew he had to help Emily. The love he felt for her was the only thing keeping him going. He met detective Cavanaugh, who confirmed Emily's story. With all of the information he had on the situation, Raphael made his decision. He forgives Emily.
In the end, she got a light sentence. He was always there to support her. They got married two years later. They had a daughter, who they named Sewa. Raphael was so grateful for the lessons he had learnt in their time together. Situations will come difficulties and trials will try to break us, but being devoid of love is the greatest destroyer of all. Love will always conquer.
