The atmospheric pressure finally exploded on a rainy Friday night during a mandatory group project session at a local diner.
Brooke, Chris, Piper, Clara, and Jake were crammed into a vinyl booth, surrounded by textbooks and half-eaten fries. Sarah had unfortunately managed to tag along under the excuse of "helping with the editing," and she was looking for blood.
"So, Brooke," Sarah purred, leaning across the table with a wicked gleam in her eyes. "Are you going to actually contribute to the project, or are you just going to keep staring at Chris with those pathetic, desperate puppy-dog eyes? The whole school is laughing at you, you know."
Before Brooke could even process the insult, Piper slammed her highlighter onto the table. "Shut up, Sarah! Seriously, no one wants you here, and no one cares about your stupid gossip forum."
"I'm just pointing out the truth!" Sarah shot back. "She threw Chris away, and now she's begging for him back."
"It's none of your business!" Clara interjected, her voice cutting through the diner like ice. "Brooke is our friend, and if you say one more word to her, I will make sure you are completely blacklisted from every social event for the rest of senior year."
The table went dead silent, the low hum of the neon lights overhead feeling deafening. But the defense from her friends was the final straw that broke Brooke's emotional dam. Tears spilled over her cheeks, and she stood up from the booth, looking directly at Chris.
"I didn't play with you, Chris!" Brooke cried out, her voice trembling. "I was scared and everything was moving too fast. But Piper and Clara helped me see what was right in front of me. I love you. I’ve loved you for months, and it's killing me that you won't even look at me anymore!"
Piper reached up, gently grabbing Brooke’s hand to anchor her, showing total support even as her own heart was aching.
Chris slowly stood up from the booth. His eyes were heavy, full of a deep, complicated sadness. He looked at Brooke, completely ignoring Sarah and the rest of the table. "You love me now, Brooke? When my walls are up? I spent months putting myself out there, and I was broken because of it. I can't just throw my boundaries away because you finally changed your mind. I'm sorry."
He grabbed his jacket and walked out into the rain. Brooke collapsed back into the booth, sobbing into her hands, while Piper and Clara immediately wrapped their arms around her, shielding her from Sarah’s flashing phone screen.
