During lunch I had nowhere to sit, I hated that I looked so alone and out of place, being the new kid sucked as hell. Everyone seemed to have their own group of friends and I bet that I looked so pathetic. What the hell? This was freaking high school not elementary school, I was gonna sit wherever I wanted. Just then I found the perfect table with two girls giggling.
"They could work" I thought carrying my tray over to meet them.
I shot them my 'I'm so innocent smile' and decided to introduce myself, "Hi I'm Katy. Is it fine if I sit here?" I asked hoping I would be lucky.
God don't let them be snubs.
"Sure why not?" The blonde-haired one said, scooting over to the other side of the table to create sitting space for me. I enthusiastically sat down taking a bite out of my over-colored apple.
The girl beside the blonde squints at me as if she recognized me from somewhere, "You're the new girl who got into a fight with the Rick."
Rumors really go fast here.
"It's Katy," I corrected.
She quickly apologized, "Oh my s**t, I'm so sorry, I'm Hazel" She introduced herself before else turning to the blonde, "And this is Rosaline,"
"Please call me Rose" The blonde corrected her vivacious friend. "But on a serious note,"She continued, "You should really watch your steps after the way you stood up to Rick, you don't know what he's capable of."
"He seems harmless to me" I told her while I'm halfway done with my apple, "His barks are much worse than his bites."
They looked at each other like I was missing a point, "Katy," Rose calls my name, "I respect your confidence and all but Rick isn't exactly the kind of guy to stand to, he's um..."
"Complicated," Hazel finished for her. "One time a boy did something similar to Rick and, the next day, he was shot right in his car, he didn't make it and rumor has it the Rick did it but he probably bribed the police or something so they wouldn't arrest him"
Why was everyone so scared of this Rick boy anyway? "They're probably rumors" I suggested.
"Just be careful,"Rose warned, "Seriously, I like you and I don't want you to get hurt"
I gave them a reassuring smile, "I won't, thanks for caring by the way."
We exchanged numbers and the rest of the lunch period is spent in silence and that was fine by me, anyway, I wasn't the social type and I liked in that way, they weren't what I would call friends, more of acquaintances but It was nice knowing I wasn't completely alone in Greendale High school.
******************************************************
First day was over, it wasn't exactly the best day and it wasn't the worst either. Fair is a more preferable word. I got home only to find my mom fully dressed up, she wore an evening gown and she actually had make up on her face, I don't remember the last time I saw her so presentable since my dad went to peace. I swear for a moment I thought there was a stranger in our living room. Her sudden metamorphosis left me in awe.
"What happened?" I asked her, throwing my bag across the couch carelessly.
She smiled at me, "We're going to the annual Greendale's neighbors get together, I have to look presentable since most of your dad's friends are going to be there."
Oh, explains a lot.
Wait A minute, what does she mean by we?, "Mom I hope you don't mean I'm going?" I ask hoping I wasn't going to the get together with her.
"You're coming with me," She told me disappointing me, "I've bought your dress for you," She told me pointing to the couch, I reached over to it and pull the wrapper open, I was dumbfounded when I saw the dress, it was beautiful really, it was cinnamon red with diamond highlights at the hem of the dress.
I couldn't help but grin, "It's beautiful, mom thank you." I beamed.
She shook her head impatiently, "Yeah whatever, go get ready, we're already late for the event." She says practically pushing me upstairs. I got to my room and first had to deal with shaving my legs, I looked like an hairy monster with female features, I admired the dress before putting it on, I let my hair fall to my shoulders and placed lipstick on my dry lips.
I was about to leave my room when I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, nope that girl wasn't me, for the first time in months I could actually admit to myself that I looked...pretty. Wow, the dress really brought out my hidden figure, I didn't even know I had shape, I always saw myself as an amorphous blob.
Minutes later I'm in Derrick's car driving with my mum, on our way to the Greendale's get together, "The CEO of this estate was one of your dad's really good friends and he wants to meet you," My moms tells me, "Please don't let me down"
I chuckled, "When have I ever let you down?" I joked knowing the number of times were incalculable. We finally reached the venue and I went in with my mom, the place was enormous and exquisitely formal, too nervously formal, what If I did something totally out of the box and mess up?
"Mrs Malia," a voice calls my mothers name, we both involuntarily turn to see the owner of the disembodied voice, it was a presentably looking man in a silver tuxedo, he had the most blinding smile, his smile was the kind of smile that could light up a dark room.
My mom's eyes widened In delight and it doesn't take me long to know that he is the CEO of Greendale, "Mr. Andrew," She beamed when he was at arms-length, she quickly nudges my arm to say something.
"Um...evening sir" I quickly respond to my mom's nudging. "I'm Katy"
He smiled again, "Oh evening dear, I'm sure your mom has done my introduction for me" He laughs.
You bet she has.
My mom joins in the laughter, what the hell was funny? Adults and their bad sense of humor, "Well, Katy I'm sure you'll love to meet my son," He says
"That'll be lovely," I lied, I don't want to meet his son, I bet he's a spoilt rich boy. yeah the height of prejudice, I know but there's a high probability that he is.
He called a woman standing behind him, I didn't take notice of her earlier, and she's holding a notepad so I'm guessing that she was his assistant. "Casey please get me my son from his room, tell him the guests are here," He nicely requested, how could a person be so polite?
Woah slow down, did he say get me my son from his 'room' he lived here? Someone actually lived here? the building was bigger than a mansion, it was the size of a shopping complex, you could actually get lost in it and he lived here? I bet he doesn't know the way around, no amount of time could make you get familiar with the place, it was way too broad.
We all settled at the dining room, I was taken by shock when Rick's girlfriend, Samantha came into the room with her family, well this was going to go badly, what was she doing here?
"So Katy how has Greendale been so far?" Mr.Andrew asks me as Sam's family settles down at the table, I can tell that she Is also surprised to see me by the look on her face.
I cleared my throat and shot him a smile, I hope it's not a crooked one, "It's been really nice, "I told him, "I must commend, sir you're doing a great job here"
"Thank you," He says with a smile. We were about to eat when I noticed a figure enter the room, I turned my head towards to entrance, only to see Rick in a tuxedo and I guessed over gelled hair was his specialty because his hair was over-gelled again like the last time, If I didn't encounter him earlier, I would have thought of him as innocent and outrageously gorgeous but his personality didn't approve of me to see him that way. What was he doing here?...
"Son!" Mr. Andrew said after noticing Rick's presence in the room. I staggered and almost fell off my chair.
What. The...
Son? Rick was the son of the founder of Greendale estate? and I even had the audacity to talk to him in the manner I did at school? God I'm so screwed.
When he took the seat by Sam who was directly in front of me, I wanted to dig a hole right in the middle of the room and bury myself so I would never be seen again. The death stare he shot me was enough to make me on the edge.
Rick dad cleared his throat, "Rick, son this is Katy," He introduced me, I wished he didn't though.
"Oh really?" He says but I guess it's only me that noticed his plain sarcasm, "You look beautiful" He tells me but I know it was another way of saying that, I was going to die.
I looked down at the table, "Um...Thank you."I shyly responded, the adults were busy talking and making dry jokes that for some reason seemed funny to them, ugh I could've eaten my hair out.
I couldn't help noticing that Rick was staring directly at me a stare that told me to run, run for my life. Sam saved me by pulling him out of the room to who knows where. Relief swooshed past me, he was putting me on the edge with the way he was staring directly at me.
Luckily for me, I had brought a Shakespeare book to read, I actually wasn't a fan of Shakespeare writing but it was better than listening to the adults talk, I was the only teenager there and it sucked. I excused myself and went out of the room; I was caught in between whether I should turn left or right to get to the parking lot.
Right it is.
I turned right listening to my own instincts and I was at the same situation I was before, again. Left or right? I chose right again, hopefully right would be the right way. That was a crappy mentality but the world is also a crappy place to live, so crap works just fine. Dang it! How many turnings are in this mansion? There was a turning again. I just gave up and sat against the wall, reading my, Othello by Shakespeare.
One hour passed and I was still deeply engrossed in my book, I was going to see if Desdemona was going to survive Othello's rage or if Othello was going to choose his love for Desdemona over his flaming rage.
I almost shrieked when I heard a door slam shut, great, it was Samantha and Rick coming out of the room, Rick is shirtless and I try to not let my mind wander about the things they did in the room, actually my mind couldn't wander because it was focused on Rick's chest, his build was quite charismatic, I wouldn't even go into the details now.
"What are you doing here?" Rick asked me while putting on his shirt; Sam just rolled her eyes and walked off obviously agitated by my Presence.
Fear gripped me now that I really knew who he was, the founder's son? s**t I messed up big time, "I-I'm lost," I staggered.
"Then find your f*****g way back!" He snapped,
I shook my head, I couldn't believe myself, I wanted this guy's approval so bad but only because of his status, how low of me? "What way?" I asked.
He eyed me rudely, at this point I know fully well that he has a strong hate for me, "If you found your way here then you can find your way back," he says discourteously, how could a person be so impolite?
"Ok" Is all I muttered, I turned around to leave before he pulled me back my wrist.
"What you did today in school" He started, "don't ever do that kind of s**t ever again or you would regret ever coming to Greendale" He threatened.
I shook my head vigorously to signify that understood, I think he loves it when people are scared of him because a smirk formed on the right wall of his pink lips. "Good," he said letting my wrist go, "It's left, right and then left again" He told me the direction and walked off.
What the hell just happened?
