Last night didn’t help my constant sour mood at all. A perk of being the King of your species, I, the she-wolves flock to you hoping to get a ride, but after a while it gets old. Bring a girl home, sneak her out when we’re done, and wake up the next morning with the same mood I had as before, I’m sick of it. My status isn’t the only reason though, I’m also quite good-looking. Just as men like to brag about the girls they’ve gotten to bed, she-wolves like to brag about getting to spend the night with the ‘alpha of alphas’. I’m almost twenty-one and have yet to find my mate. As I walked through the hall of royals, I stopped at the portrait of my mother and father. They were so happy before my father died, I remember watching the love they showed and it’s exactly what I long for. I’m sick of entertaining myself every night. Whenever my mother catches me quietly escorting another girl out of the castle, she silently scolds me. I can hear the words she wants to say to me in my head, “your father would have told you to wait for your mate as he did.” I wish I had now, but a part of me thinks I won’t find my mate if I haven’t found her by now. All I want is the one that was made for me and to love me. I want my Queen.
“Hey Greyson, you and I got invitations to Black Forest’s Mate Ball this winter, are we skipping again?” Says Felix, my Beta and who I consider my actual royal adviser. I think about it for a moment and remember I was told Black Forest’s Alpha no longer has an heir. This could be my opportunity to help the most loyal pack I have.
“Call Alpha Hendrick and tell him we plan to attend and that I have something to discuss with him,” I tell Felix and continue on my way to the dining hall. I walk down the stairs and I smell the scent I hate the most, cloves and ginger. I turn around and not to my surprise my ex-girlfriend Rachel is rushing out of her father’s office. She is scrawny like her father and as flat as a broad. Her thin caramel brown hair was done nicely like always and her clothes made her look of a higher status than she is. I question what I found attractive about her, especially since she has the personality and intelligence of a toad.
“Greyson! Finally, you’re awake!” She screeches. Goddess, I hate the sound of her voice.
“Remember your place Rachel, it’s your majesty. Now, what do you want?” I ask, annoyed.
“The maids refuse to do anything I say and I’m a guest, I would like them punished!” She screeches and I wince at the sound. I cross my arms and sigh. “Rachel, you’re part half-witch for one and two, I told them not to listen to you because you are not Felix, my mother, sister, or myself,” I say sternly. Wanting to get as far away from her, I try to walk away. Rachel grabs my arm, I snatch it away and give her a glowering look. “Why do I need to remind you that you are nothing more than my adviser’s daughter,” I say and she backs away. “You are nowhere near the status Felix’s brother is at, so do not come to my home and act like you mean something here other than being the daughter of someone I hate,” I add, my voice was getting louder than I intended. “Now leave me so I can go eat my breakfast in peace and leave the house staff alone.” I leave without giving her a chance to say anything. I don’t understand why I have to constantly remind her she is not a royal and hardly considered a noble.
I walk into the dining hall and from the smell, I can tell my mother decided to cook this morning. The first person I see is my little sister, Chelsea. She was still in her pajamas and her sandy blonde hair was in a messy bun. She and Felix’s little brother Braxton are playing Uno. My mother walks out of the kitchen door with two plates of food in her hands. She stops when she notices me.
“Good morning sweetie, we heard you yelling at Rachel again.” She says with an apologetic look.
“Why do I have to let her come here to see Ashton? Why can’t he go to see her?” I ask, rubbing the bridge of my nose, annoyed.
“Because nobody asked you to date the crazy bitch.” Says Chelsea and I just glare at her. Sadly she’s not wrong, but everyone makes mistakes in their life, this one just doesn’t understand the meaning of leaving me alone. Going to Black Forest will be a nice vacation and I can easily fit it in before I have to meet the new alpha of Blood Pearl. I have no hopes of finding my mate, there’s a curse in the royal family. Every so often the king will never find their mate and have to take a chosen mate. I must be one of those unlucky few.
After breakfast, I lock myself in my bedroom to avoid Rachel at all costs. I plan to stay in Black Forest for about 3 days, then go on my way to Blood Pearl, which is farther west. Goddess, I hate packing, I think to myself.
“You might run into the girl we saved the last time we were there.” Blade, my wolf spirit says to me. “I’ve been wondering how she has been doing since then.” He adds. I haven’t thought about that little girl in years. I spent the remainder of my nights at Black Forest sleeping outside her bedroom to make sure nothing else happened to her. I knew seeing what I did to the rogues that tried to kidnap her didn’t help with her trauma. If I remember correctly she was about ten when that happened, so she has to be seventeen now. I push the girl to the back of my head, she most likely doesn’t remember any of it.
Felix and I sneak out of the castle after Rachel leaves to go shopping. Black Forest is about a five-hour drive from here during the summer. With how many blizzards they get during the winter it will most likely become a ten-hour drive. “You know, we might find our mate tomorrow night, you should be a bit more relaxed and not so serious like usual,” Blade says and I just roll my eyes in response. I see no point in getting my hopes up for that. This trip is for business and a nice vacation afterward. If I had a mate, I would have found her already.
