Greyson and Felix left training an hour early because they had some things they needed to do. As I walked home from training, I saw Jaren’s dark brown wolf being chained up by two of our warriors. Jaren’s punishment is two months chained to the dog house in wolf form. One month for defying a direct order from the alpha and one month for attempting to attack Greyson. It is very degrading, but it can’t be helped because of the amount of disrespect he showed two nights ago. I shut off my link to everyone just so he couldn’t try to talk to me. I looked at him one last time as I walked past and he whimpered at me, I painfully ignored him. I walk into the packhouse with my head down and walk into Greyson. He is like a wall and doesn’t budge, I almost fall back, but he catches me and holds me to him. “Well hello, little alpha.” He says, smiling down at me. I slip out of his arms and put my head down. “Um, hi G-Greyson,” I said nervously. I go to walk past him, but he grabs my hand gently, causing me to look up at him. “Wait Charlee, would you spend the day with me?” He asks with a pleading look, which shocked me. “We can do anything you want.” He adds and lets go of my hand. I hug myself and think about it. “Come on Charlee, he’s our mate. You need to give him a chance, this is killing me.” Says Snow, making me realize I’m depriving her of her mate, Greyson’s wolf. I remind myself not every male is like Jaren and my dad. Greyson is my fated mate, we were made for each other for a reason. I look back up at Greyson and smile. “Yea, I have a few ideas of what we could do, let me just go take a shower and we can go,” I say smiling.
I quickly take my shower and don’t bother to blow drying my hair. I put on a sweater, a pair of skinny jeans, and combat boots. I grab my jacket and go toward my door, just as I reach for the doorknob Greyson’s scent hits me. I quickly open the door and he has his hand raised about to knock. I smile brightly and grab his hand, leading him back down the hallway. “So what’s first on the agenda?” He asks as we walk down the stairs.
“I was thinking since it’s noon, we could go get lunch,” I suggest.
“Where would you like to go, little alpha?” He asks.
“Well I haven’t been to the diner here since I’ve been back, how does that sound?”
“When I hear diner, I hear burger, milkshake, and fries and I have been dying for all three.” He says, smiling down at me. I nodded and we walked to the diner together. We played twenty questions and I found out a lot more than I was expecting. His favorite color is green, he likes to collect cars and his favorite car brand is Nissan. We get to the diner, get seated, and order our drinks. We sat in silence for a few minutes and as we did I thought about what he said this morning about him coming to our pack seven years ago. He would have been 14 when he became king, which confused me because his dad would still be young enough to rule. “So, why did your dad step down so early?” I ask, breaking the silence. He looks up from his menu quickly and his expression turns sad. “No… he died long before I even shifted. I took the throne back from my uncle the night I had my first shift.” He says slowly. We both go silent as the waiter puts our drinks down in front of us. We ordered our food and we were silent again. “I didn’t mean to bring up a bad memory, I-i’m sorry,” I say quietly, I’ve already ruined a good day. I look back up at Greyson and he’s looking at me concerned. “It’s not a bad memory anymore, I got my closure when I killed my uncle.” He shrugs and takes a sip of his milkshake. I looked at him shocked, “you… killed him” I say slowly.
“Yeah, I hated him and challenged him for the throne.”
“Why did you hate him?” I ask.
“He killed my father, so he could have the throne because my aunt wanted to be queen. He killed my dad during a sparring match and made it look like an accident and because the elders at the time were too stupid to notice, they believed him. They made him king because I was too young and he and my aunt made my family’s life a living hell.” He says playing by swirling his milkshake around with his straw. He starts to laugh and looks at him confused. “When I was 7, my cousin and I broke a stupid vase, and only I got 50 lashings for it,” I said, shaking his head.
“How can someone do that to a kid, especially their family?” I say, shocked.
“Oh it gets better, after that he left me in a cell without medical treatment and it was a good three days before the elders found me, from that day on I was determined to make him suffer. Then after my first shift, I challenged him that night, and… I won.” He says, putting his hands together on the table. I reach for his hand and take it in mine. He looks up at me surprised and it makes me wonder if he’s had even this kind of affection before. “I couldn’t imagine going through what you went through, but I know your dad would be proud of you for staying strong enough to avenge him and take back what is rightfully yours,” I say smiling, hoping it would make him feel better. He looks up at me and smiles lightly. “He would have loved you.” He says and his smile gets slightly bigger.
We get our food and while we eat, I exhaust every question I could think of to ask him, wanting to get to know him better. “Enough about me, I have been curious about what you said about your mother’s mate this morning. What did he do for a living that also would force him to leave town.” He asks.
“He was in the military and worked closely with Revenants, The rogue problem Gould City had was the reason they met. He was stationed there to help, then when it was taken care of he had to leave.” I explained.
“I’m surprised the Revenants didn’t convince him that all werewolves are evil.” He says sarcastically.
“Darren is very open-minded, he even asked my mom to turn him, but she didn’t want to risk him not surviving the change,” I say and remember how well he took seeing my mom and I shift for the first time. He even had no problem keeping it a secret from his family, lying for me about why I was skinny. Seeing my mom be mated to Darren showed me the difference between human love and the instant love you feel for your mate the moment you see them. I started to wonder if maybe that’s another reason why I wanted to take things slow with Greyson. I want to feel both of those loves and see him fall in love with me just as Darren fell in love with my mom.
