I froze.
“How did you know that?”
My mum’s expression changed.
“I didn’t ask how you were doing, Adrian. I asked where you were.”
“I told you. I was with a friend.”
She stared at me.
“Don’t lie to me.”
I swallowed.
“How do you even know Selena?”
“Because I know her family.”
There was something different about her voice. She wasn’t angry anymore.
She sounded scared.
“Mum, what is going on?”
“Adrian, you need to stay away from Selena Moreau.”
“Why?”
“Because she’s a Moreau.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
She sighed and looked away.
“You don’t understand what that family did to ours.”
I frowned.
“What did they do?”
She didn’t answer.
“Mum?”
She finally looked at me.
“If you knew the truth about the Moreaus, you wouldn’t be asking me that question.”
I stared at her, completely confused.
“What truth?”
She walked toward the door.
“Ask your father.”
Then she left.
I stood there, staring at the empty doorway.
For years, I’d heard that the Moreaus were our enemies.
But nobody had ever told me why.
And now, for the first time, I wanted to know the truth.
I waited for my dad to come back because I needed answers
“Dad?”
“Hey Adrian, how was school?”
“I need answers”
“Answers about what?”
“The Moreau family, what did they do to us that you and mom hate them this bad?”
“See, Adrian I’m not in the right mind right now to tell you anything we will talk about this later”
“No dad I’m not a kid anymore I’m a full grown adult, you’re going to tell me what happened today”
He ignored me and went upstairs and I was left alone to drown in my sorrows
Then my phone buzzed
Selena texted me
“Are you free tomorrow? I have something to tell you?”
I stared at the message.
Something told me whatever Selena wanted to tell me had something to do with our families.
FEW HOURS LATER
Liam came to my house because I texted him a few hours before saying he should come
“Wassup man, it’s been long since I came here”Liam said entering the house
“Good afternoon to you too Liam” I replied rolling my eyes
AT MY ROOM
My maid brought us glasses of wine and some snacks
“How does it feel like to be rich rich” Liam said taking a bite of a croissant
“Liam you’re rich too” I replied
“Well not as rich as you, so whats up you called me saying you have something to say you can talk now”
“It’s Selena, she said we should meet at the same cafe tomorrow and she sounded serious on the phone”
“Damnnnn, so you guys aren’t having s*x?”
“Liam, ew I’m not joking here”
“Man, I’m sorry”
He started whispering
“Just so you know, your families hate each other”
“I know that Liam but I’m growing fund of her I think I like her an-“
“Adrian you can’t like her, if your dad finds out he’s going to kill you, what are you being serious about this? That’s Selena Moreau the daughter of the Moreau family”
“Liam shut up my moms gonna hear, I know who she is as I said I grew fond of her ok?”
“Okay fine no problem but if they catch you I was not among any of this”
“Ok dude”
He signed then he continued
“So what are you going to do?”
“Mehn I don’t know probably get close to her… try to make sure she likes me then I will tell her how I feel”
“What if she doesn’t like you back?”
“She will.. I hope”
I replied smiling
FEW HOURS LATER
“Drive safe Liam, don’t die yet I still need you”
I said laughing
“I know you do dude”
I closed the door and turned my back and I saw my mom standing there glaring at me
“I warned you to stay away from that girl didn’t I?”my mom said
“Mum I’m not a child anymore, you can’t tell me who to date and I can’t control my feelings mom”I said
“Wait till your dad hears about this”
“Mom please don’t tell dad”
“I won’t but stay away”
“Mom just tell me a reason to then I will”
She didn’t answer then she turned her back against me and disappeared into the darkness
I quietly sulked to myself and went to my room.
I couldn’t stop thinking about my meetup with Selena tomorrow
What could be so important that she sounded so worried on the phone
And also why am I bothered about her, im not meant to be thinking about her
Then I heard my dad
“Hey Adrian you’re not going to sleep yet?”
“When did you come back? And also I’m going to sleep in a few”
“Not too long son”
He said smiling
“Well good night, I have a meeting by 7am so you won’t probably meet me when you wake up”
“Ok dad good night”
