ADRIAN’S POV
I stared at Selena’s message for a few seconds.
“Are you free tomorrow? I need to tell you something”
What could she possibly want to tell me?
She wanted us to meet at the same Cafe at 4pm and I got ready immediately so that I won’t be .
My mum had warned me to stay away from Selena.
My dad refused to tell me what happened between our families.
And now Selena wanted to tell me something.
There had to be a connection.
I arrived at the café a few minutes early.
Selena was already sitting at our usual table.
“Hey,” I said as I sat down.
“Hi.”
She looked nervous.
“What happened?”
She looked around before lowering her voice.
“I found something.”
“Found what?”
“Something about our families.”
I leaned closer.
“What are you talking about?”
“Yesterday, after I got home, I overheard my dad talking to someone.”
“What did he say?”
“He mentioned your father.”
My heart started beating faster.
“What about him?”
“I couldn’t hear everything, but I heard your father’s name and something about a deal that happened years ago.”
“A deal?”
She nodded.
“Then my dad said something I didn’t understand.”
“What?”
She hesitated.
“He said, ‘The Vaughns were never supposed to find out what really happened.’”
I stared at her.
“What really happened?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why did you ask me to meet you?”
“Because I found this.”
She reached into her bag and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
I looked at it.
“What’s that?”
“I found it in my father’s study.”
I slowly took the paper from her and unfolded it.
There were several names written on it.
My father’s name was at the top.
Underneath it was Selena’s father’s name.
But there was one more name.
A name neither of us recognized.
I looked at Selena.
“Who is this?”
“I don’t know.”
We stared at the paper in silence.
Then my phone suddenly rang.
It was my mum.
I answered.
“Hello?”
Her voice was tense.
“Adrian, where are you?”
“At the cafe.”
There was a long pause.
“Are you with Selena?”
I looked at Selena.
“How did you…”
“Leave.”
“What?”
“Leave the cafe right now.”
Her voice sounded frightened.
“Why?”
“Because someone has been watching you.”
The call ended.
I slowly looked toward the café window.
Across the street, a black car was parked.
And someone was sitting inside.
Watching us.
