Chapter 4: The Terms of Surrender
The air in the private executive suite felt paper-thin, heavy with the weight of Theophilus’s declaration. Precious held her ground in the center of the room, refusing to let her hands shake or her gaze waver. She was standing mere feet from a man whose wealth could buy and sell entire European conglomerates, but she refused to be intimidated in her own city.
"Total control? Precious repeated, her voice dripping with quiet disdain. You are mistaken, Mr. Nathaniel. You bought a property lease and cleared a venue debt. That makes you a landlord and a creditor. It does not give you ownership over me, my family, or my brand.
A low, slow chuckle broke from Solomon, who was watching calmly from behind the heavy oak desk. Miss de Laurent, perhaps you do not fully grasp the structure of the financial paperwork your cousin signed two hours ago.
Precious did not turn to look at Solomon. Her eyes remained locked on Theophilus's dark, penetrating gaze. Julien had no legal authority to sign away the creative assets of Maison de Laurent.
He didn't sign away the creative assets, Theophilus said softly, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. His broad frame seemed to dominate the room, his presence suffocating yet undeniable. He used your family’s majority stock holdings as collateral against a private short-term liquidity loan to cover his personal gambling debts in Monaco. When he defaulted thirty minutes ago, those shares transferred automatically to my holding company.
Precious felt a cold, sharp blade of ice slice through her chest. She turned her head slightly to glare at Julien, who was shrinking against the far glass wall, his face completely drained of color as he clutched a glass of water with trembling hands.
You staked our family shares? Precious whispered, her voice dangerously quiet.
Precious, listen to me, Julien stammered, his voice cracking with panic. "They were going to ruin me in Monte Carlo. I thought... I thought I could buy the shares back after your venue lease defaulted tonight and the stock value dropped! I didn't know his lawyers would execute the forfeiture clause instantly!
"Shut your mouth, Julien," Precious snapped, her tone carrying enough venom to make him drop his eyes in shame.
She turned back to Theophilus, adjusting the lapels of her burgundy blazer to center herself. "Whatever Julien signed was fraudulent. My father holds a veto clause in our company bylaws. A single phone call to our legal team in Geneva will freeze those shares in court for months.
Your father's legal team in Geneva will not receive the filing, b Solomon interjected smoothly, tapping a silver fountain pen against his leather folio. Because as of ten minutes ago, Nathaniel Enterprise Holdings acquired a controlling sixty percent stake in the private Swiss bank hosting your family's liquidity reserves. Any court injunction you attempt to file will be tied up in administrative review until next quarter. By then, the de Laurent brand will already be restructured under our umbrella.
The sheer speed and brutality of their corporate maneuver left no room to breathe. They hadn't just attacked one angle; they had built an airtight fortress around her entire life in less than an hour.
"Why?" Precious asked, her dark eyes burning with quiet fury as she looked at Theophilus. "Why target a French fashion house? You deal in global technology, shipping, and defense infrastructure. A luxury design brand is a drop in the ocean for your portfolio."
"The fashion house is irrelevant to me," Theophilus said. He reached out, his long fingers stopping just short of touching the collar of her blazer, his dark eyes searching her face with an intense, possessive focus. "You are what interest me, Precious."
"I am not an asset to be acquired," she said firmly.
"No," Theophilus agreed, his deep baritone voice dropping into a low, commanding register that sent a ripple through the room. "You aren't. But your independence is currently on the line. I am offering you a choice, right here in this room."
"What choice?"
Theophilus walked slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out at the rain slicking the avenues of Paris below. "Option one: You fight me in European courts. My legal team will lock down your designs, freeze your family's personal accounts, and destroy the de Laurent name before the next fashion season begins. Your friends—Victoria, Sophie, Gabrielle, and Serene—will be blacklisted from every major media house and agency across Western Europe for associating with a bankrupt label."
Precious clenched her fists at her sides, her jaw tightening until it hurt. Threatening her standing was one thing, but bringing her friends into his crosshairs made her blood boil with pure anger.
"And option two?" she demanded through gritted teeth.
Theophilus turned to face her, resting one hand in his trouser pocket while holding his glass of scotch in the other. "Option two: You sign a personal management contract with my executive firm. You retain full creative autonomy over your collections. Your family's debt is completely erased, Julien is turned over to the French authorities for corporate fraud, and your four friends receive full, unrestricted funding for their own independent ventures."
"And what is the catch, Mr. Nathaniel?" Precious asked, stepping directly into his space, her eyes flashing with fiery defiance. "What do you demand in return?"
"You relocate your primary studio from Paris to Manhattan," Theophilus said, holding her gaze without a single trace of hesitation. "You work under the direct security blanket of my enterprise. And when I call for you, you answer."
The proposal hung in the quiet office like a heavy shadow. He was offering her absolute protection and endless resources, but it came at the cost of leaving her homeland and stepping straight into his kingdom across the Atlantic.
"You want to cage me," Precious said softly.
"I want to keep you safe from the snakes in your own family," Theophilus countered, glancing briefly at Julien before turning his full attention back to her. "Paris is full of men who will bleed you dry while smiling across your dinner table. New York is where you build an empire that no one can touch."
Before Precious could formulate a reply, the heavy office door opened. Emmanuel stepped into the room, holding an encrypted glass tablet. He walked briskly over to Solomon and whispered something low into his ear. Solomon's calm face tightened slightly, and he immediately looked up at Theophilus.
"Sir," Solomon said, his tone turning crisp and urgent. "We have aggressive movement on the European debt board. A secondary corporate proxy based out of London is attempting to buy out the remaining unlisted de Laurent notes."
Theophilus's eyes narrowed instantly, his calm composure shifting into something cold, sharp, and lethal. "Who is behind the proxy?"
"We haven't confirmed the ultimate principal yet," Solomon replied, scanning the live ledger on his screen. "But they are bidding double the market rate to seize control of her international trademarks."
Theophilus turned back to Precious, stepping so close she could feel the heat radiating off his dark suit. "It seems your cousin didn't just sell you out to me. He put a target on your back for half of Europe's underworld."
Precious looked at him, her mind racing at lightning speed. Someone else was coming for her family's legacy—someone who might not offer her any terms or choices at all.
"You have three minutes to decide, Precious," Theophilus said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with unyielding authority. "Stay in Paris and let the wolves tear your life apart, or come to America with me and take control of your destiny."
Precious closed her eyes for a single second, feeling the weight of the moment shift beneath her feet. When she opened them, her resolve was set in stone.
"I go to America," she said, her voice clear and unbroken. "But my friends come with me. And we travel on my terms."
A dark, satisfied smile touched the corners of Theophilus’s lips. "Pack your bags, Mademoiselle de Laurent. We leave for New York at dawn."
