MONDAY 20 OCTOBER He woke up in absolute darkness, and that in itself was a relief. For a while he wondered if he’d woken up at all or if he was dead. It was only when he tried to sit up and felt the incredible pain of his injuries that he knew for sure he was still alive and his nightmare wasn’t yet over. He felt a bizarre sense of disappointment, then elation when he thought he might yet get to see Sam, then gut-wrenching fear because no matter how fierce the energy pulse he’d survived had been, he knew there was worse to come.
