Chapter 7 - The Presentation

781 Words
--- The gym was packed. Tri-fold boards lined the walls, colorful charts and diagrams competing for attention. Students and parents buzzed around, clutching clipboards and notebooks, murmuring critiques or excited chatter. The science fair had an energy all its own—nervous, competitive, and thrilling. Ariana’s stomach fluttered as she and Eli wheeled in their equipment and set up at their assigned table. She smoothed her hair, took a deep breath, and glanced at him. Eli, as always, looked calm. He was checking the monitors, adjusting the electrodes one last time. The soft crease between his brows gave him an intense, focused look. Ariana tried not to stare too long, but it was impossible. “Ready?” she whispered. He nodded. “As ready as we’ll ever be.” They had practiced this presentation a dozen times, but now, standing in front of judges and an audience, it felt completely different. --- The first group of judges approached, clipboard in hand. Ariana stepped forward, pushing aside nerves. “Hello,” she said brightly. “I’m Ariana Brooks, and this is Eli Turner. We’re presenting ‘Project Heart,’ a study on how emotional stimuli affect heart rate.” Eli jumped in smoothly, explaining the technical details while Ariana added the creative and observational notes. They complemented each other perfectly—her energy balancing his precision. When they demonstrated the experiment, showing how Ariana’s pulse fluctuated with music and video stimuli, the judges leaned in, intrigued. Ariana felt herself relaxing, enjoying the process. She caught Eli’s eyes, and for a moment, their usual teasing and tension melted into something easier, lighter. Then came the final slide: “Project Heart: What I Learned.” Ariana’s voice softened, but was clear and confident. “This experiment started as a science project. But it became more than that. It showed us that connections—between people, emotions, and reactions—are important. It taught me that teamwork, attention, and honesty aren’t just science concepts; they’re life concepts too. And that sometimes, the best discoveries happen when you least expect them.” She glanced at Eli, who was watching her carefully, a faint smile tugging at his lips. She felt a thrill—part pride, part something more—that he was seeing her, truly seeing her, in front of everyone. --- After the presentation, the judges scribbled notes and asked questions, which they answered confidently. Ariana noticed a few students whispering and pointing at them, but she didn’t care. Her focus was on Eli, who had stayed calm throughout, explaining data without a hint of irritation, even when a sensor had beeped unexpectedly. Finally, the judges moved on, and the crowd began to drift toward the next table. Ariana exhaled deeply. “We did it,” she said softly. Eli looked at her, expression unreadable for a second, then allowed the faintest grin. “Yeah,” he said quietly. “We did.” A small, warm bubble of victory swelled inside her—not just for winning or doing well, but because they had done it together. Then she noticed it: a lingering glance, a subtle shift in his body as he leaned slightly closer. Her pulse skipped. “Hey,” she said, voice teasing, “don’t look so smug. We make a great team, but you don’t get all the credit.” Eli smirked. “I wouldn’t dream of it. But you… you surprised me. You really proved yourself. Actions, not words.” Ariana’s cheeks warmed, but she grinned anyway. “So… do we call this a win for the project… or for us?” Eli raised an eyebrow, the hint of a playful challenge in his eyes. “Depends. Are you suggesting we’re… more than just lab partners?” Ariana’s heart raced. “Maybe I am,” she said, letting the words hang. He studied her for a moment, then shook his head with a soft chuckle. “You’re impossible.” “Am I?” she teased back, nudging his shoulder lightly. Eli’s faint smile widened just slightly. “Yeah… but in a good way.” And for the first time in days, Ariana felt entirely, undeniably happy. The project was over. The judges were impressed. And she and Eli had crossed the invisible line between awkward tension and something real. Walking out of the gym afterward, they fell into step side by side. Ariana realized she wasn’t just thinking about science anymore, or heart rates, or data. She was thinking about him—the quiet, observant, impossible Eli Turner—and how, for the first time, she didn’t want to leave him behind. And maybe, just maybe, he felt the same way. ---
