Chapter 6: The Space Between

The quiet moments were what Mia began to cherish most. It wasn’t the grand gestures or witty banter, but the silences that stretched between them, comfortable and unpressured. It was in those moments that she felt the most vulnerable—and the most safe. --- One crisp winter evening, Mia found herself on the rooftop of Starlight Academy’s library. The stars glimmered like tiny pinpricks of light, their beauty stark against the inky darkness. Ethan had texted her earlier with a cryptic message: “Meet me where the world feels endless.” She wasn’t sure what to expect, but when she stepped onto the rooftop, she found Ethan already there, leaning against the railing. “You’re late,” he teased, his breath visible in the chilly air. Mia rolled her eyes. “Maybe your directions were too vague.” He chuckled, handing her a steaming cup of hot chocolate. She took it, her fingers brushing his for the briefest moment. “What is this about?” she asked, glancing at him. Ethan gestured toward the sky. “Sometimes, it helps to remember how small we are in the grand scheme of things. It puts things in perspective.” Mia sipped her drink, the warmth spreading through her. “You brought me here to stargaze?” “Partly,” he admitted. “But mostly, I wanted to spend time with you without the noise of everything else.” Her heart skipped a beat. It wasn’t just his words—it was the way he said them, like she was the only person who mattered in that moment. They stood in silence for a while, the weight of the world fading as they watched the stars. “You know,” Ethan said softly, “I’ve always admired people like you.” “People like me?” “People who fight for what they want, no matter how hard it gets. You don’t give up, Mia. Even when it feels like the world is against you.” She looked at him, her defenses lowering. “I’m not as strong as you think.” “You’re stronger,” he said, his voice unwavering. Mia felt her throat tighten. “Why do you do that?” “Do what?” “See the best in me when I can’t even see it myself.” Ethan turned to her, his eyes searching hers. “Because I see you, Mia. Not the version of you that’s always trying to prove something. The real you. And she’s extraordinary.” The words hit her like a tidal wave, crashing through the walls she had built around herself. Before she could overthink, she spoke. “You scare me, Ethan.” His brows furrowed. “Why?” “Because you make me want things I’m not sure I deserve.” Ethan’s expression softened, his hand reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair from her face. “You deserve everything, Mia. And I’ll spend as long as it takes proving that to you.” --- For the first time in years, Mia allowed herself to feel. To let someone in. To believe that she didn’t have to be perfect to be loved.
