“What?” Wendy’s high-pitched voice resounded through the office. Her eyes went wide in disbelief—it felt like the ground shook under the force of her shriek.
My heart was pounding hard and fast, and for a split second, my vision blurred. My ears rang, like someone had placed a fog inside them.
I shook my head to clear the buzz, just as the door to the office opened.
Marcus.
He stood there, and right behind him was Kimberly. They didn’t even knock. The moment his eyes met mine, he froze. His face turned pale instantly—like he already knew what I’d just done.
“Get in here, Marcus,” Mr. Kingston’s gravelly voice filled the air. From the corner of my eye, I saw Kimberly trying to quietly step back toward the hallway.
“Both of you,” he added sharply.
