Desmond's POV
I'd always found Raine beautiful since the moment I laid my eyes on her, but tonight, she did a whole lot of justice to that fact. I had to stop myself from outrightly gaping at her, and calm my raging wolf, control my eyes from changing colours and keep my twitching hands to myself.
I saw the dress in one of my boutiques and I immediately thought of her. Hell, I think about her in everything. I thought it would look beautiful, but that selfish and naughty part of me wanted to see her in something that showed more skin.
In case it isn't obvious enough, I regretted that decision. She taunted me every time I stared at her back or her legs.
We walked to my car quietly, her hand warm against mine. I could hear the steady but loud drumming of her heart, telling me how nervous she was about this situation.
When we got to the car, I opened the door for her. I made sure she was well seated before I closed the door and went over to the driver's seat.
I stared at Raine once I was seated next to her. She did something with her hair where the whole thing was bundled up and a few strands were falling over her face. It was so adorable.
"Are you going to keep staring at me?"
I smiled. "I can do that for hours and it would be a perfect date for me."
Her lips parted, but she was too speechless to say anything.
I love moments like this where I stun her into silent surprise.
Even if I was just teasing her, I wasn't lying about the fact that I could actually do nothing but stare at her for hours and still go home a happy man.
"Now, relax and let me take care of you for the whole night." She nodded. "Let me know if you're not enjoying the date. You're free to call it off anytime and I will drive you straight back.
"Thank you."
The drive to my pack was less than an hour. I looked over at Raine to know if she was concerned by the fact that I was bringing her to my pack, but she wasn't.
I then drove us to the Eclipse tower— a tall building with a rooftop that works well enough for what I had planned.
"Here, take." I took off my suit jacket and handed it to her. I was too happy to see her in the dress that I didn't think of the weather at night and how it would affect her.
We were wolves, and we weren't as susceptible to cold as humans were, but I wanted the ultimate comfort for Raine.
"Oh, no. I'm good."
I frowned. "I'm not going to stay here and watch you catch a cold. I insist."
After a second thought, she took it from me, but she avoided my gaze as she did so, a small smile on her lips.
When she was done, we came down together.
Raine took a look at the area.
The Eclipse tower floors served different purpose. There was a restaurant, a bar, a shopping mall even a floor where worshippers connect with the Goddess.
The whole area was busy with people moving in and out, cars driving through, people in control to avoid chaos. Rows of flowers and decorative plants formed a fence around the whole space, and a large colourful fountain beautified the center. It was one of the many buildings I had, but I had never been as proud of it as this moment.
I held her hand as we entered. As expected, no one asked any questions. They just made way for us to pass.
I took her to a private elevator— my Beta, Gamma and I were the only ones that could assess it. Then I pressed the button to the rooftop.
"Are you okay?" I asked when I noticed how quiet she was.
She nodded. "I just hardly go out."
That was a surprising information. "Even shopping?"
She shook her head. "Omegas do that for me."
"You don't seem so thrilled about them having to do your shopping."
She shook her head. "Let's just say, I have very controlling parents."
Anger rose up within me with the thought of her parents controlling everything she does. The same parents she was trying to escape, and that's why she found herself in Sienna's pack.
"I did go out with Davina when I was at the Lunar claw pack. We went to the movies. She was in such a bad state, I wanted to make her feel better."
I smiled. She kept her own pain, while she tried to help Davina through hers.
"Did you have fun at it?" I couldn't help but pry. I just wanted an opportunity, anything at all that would give me more glimpses of her personal life.
"Not as much fun as would be expected from a girl's outing, but we left in much better mood than we came. Lucien was furious though."
A small laugh rumbled out of me at the picture of an angry Lucien. He was probably worried about Davina leaving him or something along that line.
Raine and I fell into silence again as the elevator moved up. I became acutely aware of how small the space was, how the air seemed charged with something thicker than oxygen. The hum of the elevator and the rapid racing of our hearts were the only sound between us.
My wolf was restless, pacing, urging me to get closer to her, to do more than just hold her hand.
Her fingers were still curled around mine. She hadn't attempted to pull away. And that alone was enough to soar my mood.
The elevators finally stopped and the doors opened. We stepped out together into the make-shift picnic I'd set up for us earlier.
A thick blanket was spread on the floor, cushions, pillows and snacks. I got her favourite cheesecake cupcake—I asked Sienna—crackers and chocolates, apples, strawberries and non alcoholic cider wine. Nothing too extravagant, but I hoped it would please her.
The setting sun painted the sky in a red-orange hue, lighted candles flickering under the breezy night.
I turned to Raine, and a pleasant smile stretched my lips when I saw the expression on her face. Her lips were slightly parted in awe, and her eyes had softened into a wistful look.
"You set this up?"
My chest puffed with pride. "By myself."
"This is so... thoughtful."
"Told you that I'm charming once you get to know me."
She didn't retort with those snarky remarks. She was still too busy marvelling at the sight in front of her. On the other hand, I found it absolutely adorable how she was so pleased with something so small.
I tugged her hand, and she followed me as we went to sit on the blanket.
"The pack rooftop has always been my favorite escape place," I said, not tearing my gaze from her face. "People rarely go there. And the ordinary act of looking at the sky is just so relaxing for some reason."
"True." She nodded in agreement. "The constellations are beautiful. Reminds me of astrology."
"You believe in it?" I stared at her curiously.
"I don't fully understand it, but I think it's interesting." Now there was a smile on her lips. "Do you?"
"Nah. It's ridiculous to think stars control what I do. Besides, I think nasty people use it as an excuse for their behaviour."
She laughed, freely, unguarded, eyes twinkling in delight. It was the first time I've ever seen her so inhibited and unrestrained. She looked so marvelous at this moment that wished I could just paint a picture of her right now and keep it forever.
"Laugh more." I was unable to stop myself. "You look so beautiful when you do."
Her smile fell. "That sounds cliche."
"And sincere."
"Now, you bribe me with a date and expect me to pay with laughter?"
I grinned. "I've always been so smooth."
She rolled her eyes.
"Lie with me." I lay down and patted the space beside me. "It's a date. You cannot refuse."
Thankfully, she didn't argue. She just lay beside me, placing a small space between us. But it was still enough to fill my whole consciousness with the knowledge of her presence.
"The theme of our date tonight is getting to know you." I said, turning to her. "I want to know everything that interests you, Raine. Everything you care about, and everything that makes you "you". Tell me."
