Chapter 8: Raine, please

1451 Words
Desmond's POV They were many things to describe me, but being a creepy stalker wasn't one of them. That was until I met my mate. I knew so much more than she would have permitted, and I already planned to go see her. I knew that she hardly goes out, her parents were assholes and that Sienna went to take her away just this evening for a reason I couldn't begin to understand. I got her a bouquet of golden roses, a customized apology letter, an expensive dress, rare jewelries and a box of makeup because I had no f*****g clue the kind of gift she would like. I had a feeling that she would not want anything from me, but a man's gotta try. There was one thing I knew for sure: in the end, Raine was going to be mine. In every way. The knock on my door made me frown. I already knew who it was, unlike before, I wasn't too happy to receive her. The door opened at my permission, and Mackenzie stepped in. She was dressed in one of those dresses that showed her cleavages, but I was as interested in it as much as I was interested in watching paint dry. "Good afternoon, Alpha." Instead of sitting, she walked around until she was standing beside me, leaning too close for comfort. "I've not seen you in days, and I'm wondering if you're avoiding me." "I'm not avoiding you, Kenzie. I just have a lot of work to do." "You seem stressed. I can help you relax." I caught her hand just before she could touch me, and shock flashed through her eyes. This was the first time that I was stopping her. "I'm not in the mood." She stepped back a few paces. "Is something wrong?" "No." "Did I do something?" She seemed genuinely concerned. "No, Mackenzie. You did nothing. I'm just not in the mood." Her lips thinned, and her eyes focused on me with curiosity. "Is it because of Davina?" Davina? f**k me now. "No." "The other lady that was sitting next to Davina that evening? The one that stood up when she saw you?" "I was busy before you came. Please leave." My voice was more stern than I intended, but the mention of Raine made this whole moment feel like one big betrayal. "I knew it!" Her voice broke. "I knew you were going to find your mate and ruin what we have. I knew you'd leave me." I pressed my hands to my temples. I was already thinking of ways to make Raine forgive me. I could not deal with MacKenzie's drama right now. "Kenzie," my voice was sterner, "I'm sorry, but what we have is over." I left no room for argument. "Leave. Now." She opened her mouth to argue, but she saw something in my eyes that made her rethink. We might had been f*****g, but I was still her Alpha. Without saying another word, she stormed out of the office. And I mentally added one more 'Desmond is an asshole' to the pile I'd been gathering recently. My decision to go after Lorraine immediately was cut short when I got a message that an ally pack— Green valley pack, Maxwell's pack— was under a rogue attack. The next few days were busier than I expected. From the rogue attack to Davina being kidnapped by someone that hated her guts and Lucien on the verge of serial murder. It took about five days, but Davina was finally found and rescued. I brought in Mackenzie. She'd thrown a huge tantrum, but she later agreed to help. She was a witch and she was good at her craft. I drove Davina and Lucien from the Ironfang pack back to theirs— the Lunar claw. While Lucien and Davina settled in, I stayed downstairs to wind down over a glass of liquor. Until I felt a presence behind me. "Tough week, isn't it?" Sienna stood behind me, glass of red wine in one hand, an apple in another and a smile too big for the situation on her lips. But I didn't care about any of those things. "Where's Lorraine?" "Upstairs." She bit out of her apple. "With Davina." "You're messing with me. If she was upstairs, I would have seen her climb." "She was here before you." I frowned. "She came with you and I was here before you." She wasn't fazed by my displeasure. "Believe what you choose then." I let out a breath through my mouth. Sienna might be a friend, but I didn't want to find myself at the receiving end of her pettiness. Not when she had Lorraine as leverage. "Why is she staying with you?" I then asked seriously. "Her parents are old school and she wanted to live a little." I pinched my brows, reigning in my frustration. "Sienna, please." She scoffed. "Now you care about her?" "What happened that night..." Hell, how was I going to explain? "I didn't understand myself at that moment. It wasn't on purpose." Her gaze went from my face to the glass I was holding. Her eyes skimmed through the almost empty bottle on the table, and she nodded to herself, probably coming to a crazy conclusion. "I see, the drink is affecting you." The drink was different, one tiny sip would knock out a human in a second, and it could get Alphas drunk. But I knew what I was talking about. "Do I sound drunk to you?" She grimaced. "A little bit." I hated this woman. "I would have told you to ask her that question yourself, but she wants absolutely nothing to do with you. So back off." "Sienna, there was a misunderstanding. I wasn't myself that day. Something happened, I can't explain because I don't even understand what it is." Now she looked offended. "You think I'm that gullible?" "f**k, Sienna—" I ran my hands through my hair. "You're a player, Desmond. You have people like your witch girlfriend throwing themselves at you and you expected the same from Raine." I decided to ignore her. Talking to her was pointless. I only cared about explaining to Raine. "Alpha," I heard MacKenzie's voice before I saw her. Or maybe I didn't see her at all, because I perceived that scent again, coming from some floors above us. She was truly upstairs, but I didn't give a f**k how she got there. Mackenzie kept talking to me, but I'd effectively tuned her out. My ears perked up when I heard the footsteps coming down. Davina first. Then Lorraine. I got up and walked to the foot of the stairs. Davina and Sienna hugged each other, while the former began to thank us for our role in her rescue, but I couldn't make out the exact words she was saying. I was busy staring at Auburn hair and jade eyes. Now that she was close without a thousand people around or without her trying to run away from me in a taxi, I could read her better. There was an air of melancholy around her even though she tries to put on a brave face. I noticed that slight tremble in her lips even as she crossed her hands around her chest and stared me in the eyes. There was a mixture of anger, curiosity and hurt in those orbs, so beautiful, it was almost painful. I dropped the smugness that I carried about that night. The moment where I embarrassed her and myself kept playing in my head like a loop. I really wouldn't blame her if she didn't want anything to do with me. "Raine, please, can we talk?" She held out a hand to stop me before I could take a step further. "Don't!" She shook her head. "Raine, please." "I feel like we're interrupting something." Sienna said to Davina behind, wanting to give us space. Raine shook her head. "You are not interrupting anything. I don't want to talk to him." She didn't let me explain. She didn't want to hear anything I said. Instead, she turned around and walked back up where she was coming from. I sunk back into my chair, dread coiling around me. I always thought that she would come around. It was just one misunderstanding. She might play hard to get, but she would get tired eventually. Until today. Now for the first time, I wondered. What if she'd truly made up her mind? What if she wasn't playing any games and she just didn't want me as her mate? The thought iced my skin. I would not let that happen. Raine was mine.
