I was so happy to be at the beach, watching the waves crashing on the white sand. We were at Coronado Central Beach, just my mom, dad, and my twin sister, Lorielle.
“Hi,” a voice called out. I had to shield my eyes with my arm to see the guy who was greeting me. The sun was shining so brightly.
“Hello,” I replied, smiling a little shyly. I wasn’t used to talking to guys.
He used his surfboard to block the sun from my face. “Thank you.”
“My pleasure.” I couldn’t help but notice his amazing physique. His six-pack abs were seriously impressive. Any girl would be wowed by that view.
I could feel my cheeks getting red as he walked towards me, looking at me with those intense eyes. I was wearing my full coverage lifeguard, and suddenly I felt self-conscious.
“You’re alone?” He had this really smooth way of talking. I couldn’t help but get a little flutter in my stomach because he was paying attention to me. There were so many beautiful girls on the beach, why was he talking to me?
I was building a sandcastle, since I love doing that when I’m at the beach.
“You wanna join?” I invited.
“If you want, yes!”
“Sure!” I said, smiling.
I discreetly glanced at him. “By the way, I’m John Rex Ellison, and you are?”
He held out his hand, and I smiled, taking it. But instead of saying my real name, I used my twin’s name, Lorielle.
“Hmmm… nice meeting you, Lorielle Jones. The Joneses are famous business people. Are you Mr. Stewart Jones’ daughter?”
“Same here, yes, he’s my dad,” I replied, letting go of his hand. I couldn’t miss the way he held on a little tighter, making me feel a little awkward.
He stared at the birthmark on my shoulder, so I quickly covered it with my hair.
“What was that?” he asked.
“Just dirt,” I said, smiling.
“I see. I thought it was your birthmark.”
I couldn’t help but sneak peeks at his sparkling abs. They were distracting.
“I don’t have a birthmark on my shoulder,” I lied.
We ended up having a lot of fun building our sandcastle, and I don’t know why, but my heart was beating a little faster, and I felt a strange nervousness. I was good at hiding my feelings though. This guy was different.
I glanced towards my family, but they were busy. Mom and Dad were talking, and Lorielle was back in our hotel suite, she didn't want to come out and preferred to stay in her room, reading a book.
“I haven’t seen you around here before. I guess you’re just on vacation?”
“Yes, my dad wanted to come here.”
“I thought so.”
Mr. Ellison looked even hotter when I saw his perfectly straight teeth. He could be a toothpaste commercial model! They were so white, and his skin was flawless.
“Staring is rude, Ms. Jones.” Mr. Ellison’s deep voice brought me back to reality. Wow!
“I was just thinking,” I stammered.
“Hmmm… really, huh?”
“You don’t believe me.”
“I thought you were speechless from my good looks,” he teased me playfully, making me smile.
“See? You’re more beautiful when you smile.”
“Hump, you’re just trying to flatter me, huh?” I scoffed.
“I’m just stating a fact, Ms. Jones.”
Finally, our sandcastle was finished, and we decided to take a picture.
“Can I take some pictures of it, too?” Mr. Ellison asked, politely.
“Sure, of course,” I replied, smiling. We took a couple of pictures together, with our sandcastle in the background.
“Maybe you want to try surfing? I can teach you,” Mr. Ellison suggested.
“Oh, I don't know how to surf, and I’m not a very good swimmer either,” I admitted, feeling a little embarrassed.
Honestly, I wanted to learn how to surf, but I was scared.
“That’s not a problem if you can’t swim. We can use a life jacket while you learn. I can guide you, if you want.”
Whenever Mr. Ellison smiled, a strange feeling, like a tickle, would hit my heart. I was hesitant, but he was so persistent. Finally, I gave in. He was a bit of a charmer.
“I’m glad you said yes. You know, I love this place, it’s so peaceful and quiet. I especially love looking out at the crystal-clear ocean.”
I looked at Mr. Ellison's serious face. He was gazing out at the vast ocean, giving me a chance to really admire him. He had such a handsome face and a commanding presence. He was so different, with a very respectful air about him, in the way he spoke and in every movement.
I don't know why, but my heart was suddenly beating faster.
"Well, I can teach you some basic steps."
"Okay, I'm willing to learn," I said, smiling. Mr. Ellison brought a strange sense of joy, even with all the problems I had.
"As a beginner, we'll start with a longboard or a foam top surfboard. We need to find the right spot for you, but first, we need to practice paddling and the pop-up. Remember, practice and patience are key," Mr. Ellison said with a smile. I was so absorbed in everything he was saying, I was determined to learn.
We practiced on dry land first before heading out to the gentle waves that were playing on the shoreline.
I was feeling more confident with each passing moment, and I couldn't wait to finally take on the waves.
"Are you ready?" Mr. Ellison asked, his smile bright and inviting.
It took all my willpower not to stare at his abs. I noticed a few women giving me jealous glances, which only added to the excitement. It was a good thing I was enjoying all the attention he was giving me because some of the other women seemed to be trying to steal it away.
