Chapter three: The First Code

375 Words
Aiden’s fingers trembled as he turned the last dial on the small safe. Click. The lock opened. Inside lay a slim, black notebook and a USB drive. His father’s careful handwriting marked the top: *“For Aiden. Start here. Follow the path, not the people.”* He grabbed the notebook and flipped it open. The pages were filled with symbols, numbers, and cryptic notes—like a language he had never seen but somehow felt familiar. He remembered how his father always said, “Patterns tell the truth, Aiden. Always look for the pattern.” A soft beep from the USB drive made him jump. He plugged it into his laptop, and a single folder appeared: **“City Map – Restricted Zones.”** The map was digital, detailed, and unsettling. Certain buildings were marked with tiny symbols—some looked like the one on the letter. Some were circled in red. Others were crossed out. Aiden’s mind raced. *What is all this? Why me?* Then he heard a faint sound—footsteps outside the office window. He peeked and saw the two hooded figures still pacing. They hadn’t moved closer yet, but their attention was clear: they were waiting for him to make a mistake. He realized the notebook might hold the key to understanding the symbols, but he needed help. He thought of **Elara Cross**, his childhood friend and tech genius. If anyone could decode the patterns, it was her. He typed a quick message to her encrypted email: *“I need you. Now. It’s about my father. Don’t come alone.”* The screen blinked. No reply yet. Time was slipping, and the figures outside weren’t going anywhere. Aiden gripped the notebook tighter. He had a choice: stay hidden and risk them breaking in, or take a chance and leave the house to meet Elara. He remembered his father’s final words in the letter: *Stay unseen. Trust no one who reaches out first.* Decision made, Aiden slipped out the back door into the quiet alley behind the house. The city was waking, but the streets were already full of shadows. One thing was certain: the quiet wars had begun, and Aiden had just stepped onto the first battlefield.
