Chapter Two: the unexpected encounter

522 Words
The blinding glare of hospital lights pierced through Emilia's closed eyelids. Groaning, she squinted against the brightness, trying to make sense of her surroundings. Slowly, the sterile scent and the low hum of medical equipment registered. She was back in the world she knew too well. "Take it easy," a gentle voice cautioned. Blinking, Emilia turned her head to find a man sitting in a chair next to her hospital bed. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his deep blue eyes held a hint of concern. "Where am I?" Emilia's voice was raspy, betraying the dryness of her throat. "You were hit by a car. The driver brought you here. You're safe now," the man explained calmly. The pieces of that ill-fated night started to come back to her—her frustration, the alcohol-induced haze, and the impact of the collision. Emilia's fingers twitched, and she instinctively reached for her abdomen, feeling relief flood her when she realized she was unharmed. "Thank you for helping me," she managed, her voice still weak. "It's the least I could do," he replied with a slight smile. "I'm Alex Sterling." Recognition flickered in Emilia's eyes. The name carried weight, associated with power, wealth, and influence. "You're the billionaire?" "The one and only," he confirmed, his lips quirking up in amusement. As Emilia observed him, she noticed a curious mix of intensity and guardedness in his gaze. "Why would someone like you stop to help me?" Alex's expression turned serious. "Sometimes, life presents us with opportunities to change our course, even if only for a moment." She wanted to inquire further, but a nurse entered the room, distracting her from her thoughts. Emilia's body was intact, but her pride was wounded, and she longed to escape the sterile confines of the hospital. In the days that followed, Emilia's strength returned, as did her determination to piece together her fractured life. During one of Alex's visits, she found herself sharing the painful chapters of her recent past—the imprisonment, the loss of her son, and the betrayal that still festered. "Life can be cruel," Alex mused, his gaze distant. "But sometimes, alliances can be forged out of necessity." Emilia regarded him with a mix of curiosity and caution. "What do you mean?" He hesitated, as if debating whether to divulge a secret. "I need a woman to marry temporarily—for reasons I can't share." The proposition hung in the air between them. Emilia's mind raced, her skepticism warring with the allure of his offer. He claimed he could help her find her son—was this a chance to reclaim what she had lost? She leaned forward, her eyes locking onto his. "What do I get in return?" Alex's lips curled into a wry smile. "A hefty sum of money, and my assistance in locating your son." It was a gamble, a leap of faith into the unknown. But Emilia was a fighter, and she knew that sometimes the strangest alliances could lead to unexpected outcomes. With a steady breath, she extended her hand. "Alright, Mr. Sterling, let's hear the terms of this contract."
