Chapter 6: The Power Within

1178 Words
The air crackled with raw energy, and my legs buckled under the force of it. Tremors spread across the ground like ripples on a disturbed lake. The once tranquil training grounds were in chaos—wolves shifted, growls pierced the air, and pack members scrambled to regain their footing. "Focus!" Draven's voice sliced through the madness, sharp and commanding. His hands gripped my shoulders, grounding me against the storm that raged within my chest. “I can’t—” My breath hitched as a surge of heat rushed through my veins. “It’s too much!” “You can control it,” he insisted, his eyes blazing with an intensity that left no room for doubt. “You have to.” A strangled cry tore from my throat as my vision blurred. My wolf clawed at the edges of my mind, desperate to break free. But there was something else—something darker and far more terrifying—entwined with it. I felt it thrumming through my body like an unrelenting drumbeat. “Draven…” My voice cracked. “Help me.” He pulled me closer, his voice a low growl. “Breathe with me.” I focused on the steady rise and fall of his chest, forcing myself to match his rhythm. The chaos inside me dulled, though the energy still simmered beneath the surface, waiting for the slightest provocation to explode. Just as I thought I had regained control, a harsh voice cut through the tense silence. “She’s a danger to this pack.” I turned to see Draven’s Beta, his face twisted with fury. His sharp eyes flickered between me and Draven, as though calculating his next move. “We should eliminate her before she brings ruin.” His words struck me like a physical blow, and my heart clenched. Draven’s growl was low and deadly. “Touch her, and I’ll end you.” The Beta’s lip curled. “Is that a threat, Alpha?” “No,” Draven snarled. “It’s a promise.” Silence fell, heavy and suffocating. The pack members who had gathered around watched with bated breath, sensing the impending storm. “You’re blinded by whatever twisted bond you think you have with her,” the Beta spat. “But the rest of us see the truth. She’s unstable, a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.” “I didn’t choose this,” I said, stepping forward despite the trembling in my legs. My voice was hoarse but resolute. “But I’ll learn to control it. I’ll fight for this pack, whether you believe in me or not.” His laughter was cold and bitter. “Fight for us? You’ll destroy us.” Draven’s hand shot out, grabbing the Beta by the collar. “You forget your place,” he growled. “She’s my mate and your Luna. Disrespect her again, and I’ll rip your throat out.” The Beta’s eyes flashed with defiance, but he held his tongue. Draven released him with a shove, and he stumbled back, teeth bared in fury. “This isn’t over,” the Beta hissed. “Mark my words.” He turned on his heel and stalked away, but the tension lingered like a dark cloud. Draven exhaled sharply, his gaze softening as it landed on me. “Are you all right?” “I will be,” I said, though my voice wavered. He studied me for a moment, then nodded. “Come with me.” We walked in silence through the dense forest that bordered the training grounds. The cool air was a balm against my overheated skin. Draven’s presence beside me was both reassuring and unnerving. There was an unspoken weight between us, heavy with questions neither of us dared to voice. When we reached a secluded clearing, Draven stopped and turned to face me. “Sit,” he commanded, his tone gentler than before. I sank onto a fallen log, grateful for the chance to rest. Draven crouched in front of me, his piercing gaze never wavering. “What happened back there?” he asked. “I don’t know.” I pressed my palms against my thighs, trying to steady myself. “It was like…something broke free inside me.” Draven’s jaw tightened. “Your wolf?” “Yes, but there was more. Something darker.” His eyes darkened. “Darker how?” I hesitated, searching for the right words. “It felt ancient, like it didn’t belong to me but was part of me at the same time.” Draven’s expression hardened. “We need to figure this out before anyone else tries to challenge you—or me.” “You mean the Beta.” “He’s not the only one who’s wary of you,” Draven admitted. “The pack is watching, waiting for any excuse to doubt you.” I clenched my fists. “Then I’ll prove them wrong.” Draven’s lips quirked into a faint smile. “That’s the spirit.” Before I could respond, the ground beneath us trembled again. My heart raced as the energy I had struggled to contain surged to the surface. “No,” I whispered, panic creeping into my voice. “Not again.” Draven was on his feet in an instant. “Focus, Liana. You can control this.” “I don’t know how!” “You’re stronger than this,” he insisted. “Trust yourself.” The words struck a chord deep within me. I had spent my entire life being told I was weak, useless, a burden. But Draven’s belief in me ignited something fierce inside. Gritting my teeth, I forced myself to stand. The ground trembled beneath my feet, but I planted myself firmly. I closed my eyes and reached for the wild energy coursing through me. I imagined it as a raging river, threatening to sweep me away. But instead of fighting it, I let myself flow with it, guiding it where I needed it to go. Slowly, the tremors subsided, and the energy settled into a steady pulse. When I opened my eyes, Draven was watching me with a mixture of awe and pride. “You did it,” he said. I let out a shaky laugh. “Barely.” “It’s a start,” he said, his voice firm. Before either of us could say more, a low growl echoed through the forest. My blood ran cold as a pair of glowing eyes appeared in the shadows. Draven’s posture shifted, every muscle taut and ready for battle. “Stay behind me,” he ordered. A massive wolf emerged from the darkness, its fur bristling and teeth bared. My heart pounded as recognition dawned—it was the Beta’s wolf. “You’ve made your choice,” Draven growled. “Don’t make me regret letting you live.” The Beta’s wolf snarled, eyes gleaming with defiance. Draven’s voice was cold and lethal. “Stand down, or this will be your end.” The wolf’s lips curled in a vicious grin. And then he lunged.
