Light continued to power into Kari’s window. She knew it was Sunday morning but stayed in bed anyway. Her body felt like she ran a marathon, and her heart was in pieces. She thought she finally had it, the love her parents always spoke of with moments of chemistry and sparks. She couldn’t get his face out of her head and still felt his lips on hers. Tears dried all over her face as she cried all night and was now empty. She knew today would be tough and tomorrow tougher. Before she even climbed into bed, she turned her phone off to avoid today as much as possible. Kari pulled the covers over her head when she heard a knock at the door.
“Honey? Can I come in?” Julie, Kari’s mother asked with concern.
Her mother’s voice was filled with concern and hints she might not have slept well last night either. Kari rolled away from facing the door. Her parents didn’t know what happened, but knew it was something not good. All they knew is she came home after the movie and went straight to her room. If she faced her mother now, she knew she would not be able to keep it hidden. It would be nice to talk to someone about it. She knew she wouldn’t be able to talk to Lindsey, she might just defend him. Unfortunately, she didn’t know if that was true as them being friends was still new, everything was still new.
“Mom I’m fine, I’m just tired, is all. I will be down later.” Kari tried to sound reassuring to her mother.
“Sweetheart, you don’t sound fine. I’m coming in.”
Julie entered the room which looked more like a dark dungeon minus the small light coming from the window. She opened the curtains and blinds more to brighten the space. Kari rolled away further from her mother and let out a groan. Her mother sat down at the end of the bed and looked at her daughter with concern. Kari sniffled as she knew she would start to cry again if she answered her mother.
Kari sat up in bed knowing that if she didn’t get this over with her mother would sit there all day. Tears started running down her face and she wiped them away with her sleeve. Kari cleared her throat and sighed.
“It started out really nice mom, it actually turned into a date between Trent and me. I felt so happy, and it felt like how you described it when you were with dad for the first time. I really thought that this was it and I let my guard down. We even had an amazing kissing session, and he was so perfect. He treated me really well and I felt so comfortable and cherished. We hardly even watched the movie.” Kari said with a small smile.
Julie nodded and handed her daughter a tissue. Kari blew her nose and took a few deep breaths. She continued telling her mom what happened.
“Terra, Lindsey, and I stopped in the bathroom to freshen up and gossip about the guys. Then we went outside and that is when I saw it. Vicki jumped on Trent and was kissing him! I dropped my soda and ran to my car! It hurt so much that the whole thing was a lie, and I just ran!” Kari started crying again.
Tears were running down her face again. Julie wrapped her daughter in her arms with a big bear hug. Kari shivered in her arms and just let all of her emotions out. Her mom began patting her back just like when she was little and being comforted in the rocking chair on her mom’s lap. Kari’s heart felt like it would never be whole again.
“How could he mom!” Kari exclaimed between sobs.
“Oh Kari, did he say anything to you last night? Or this morning?” Julie released Kari and looked at her
“I don’t know, I turned off my phone. I don’t think I want to know what he has to say.” Kari said, blowing her nose.
“Okay, well let’s turn it on and see what we find, shall we? I’m sure you don’t know the whole story, what if this Vicki girl really did surprise him and he didn’t like it?”
What is wrong with my mom? I am crying with my heart broken and she wants to know what the texts might have said, and from whom I got them from?
Sure enough, when Kari turned the phone on it was flooded with messages. There were tons of text messages and missed calls, the majority of them being from Trent. Julie sat closer to her as they flipped through them.
“See honey, not all is lost. It seems like Vicki jumped on Trent and he pushed her off. See look at the message from Lindsey, she even sent a photo of Lindsey on the ground all upset. I am sure he is really upset as well and thinks that you hate him. Why don’t you call Lindsey or one of your other friends and find out more about what happened? Then talk to Trent, you will feel better if you do.” Julie said lovingly to her daughter.
Kari looked at her mother confused,” How do you know” They could all just be lying and telling the same story!”
“Because it is not in the nature of a Winter to lie or betray their ma… loved one.” Julie responded.
Kari’s mom smiles at her with a soft it's going to be alright look. Her mother has never steered her wrong before and she really was missing Trent. It would make sense that he would push her off after what she saw at school between them on the first day. Kari blew her nose again and sighed.
“That’s kind of a weird thing to say mom,” Kari sarcastically commented. Julie shrugged with a smile. Kari went ahead and looked at her phone going through all of the messages.
“I will leave you to your thoughts my dear. Remember that your father and I love you and are here for you.” Julie kissed Kari’s forehead.
I felt it in my heart that I could trust him. It did seem almost convenient for her being there and jumping on him right when I came outside. He wasn’t even facing her; he was facing me. I need to know what happened.
Kari watched her mom get up and leave with a kind smile. Kari looked back at her phone. She opened up the texts from Trent and was starting to type a response to him. She wanted to ask him what happened and to talk to him in person. She was about to hit send when there was a knock on her door.
“Mom I will come down soon and I will eat something, I promise alright?” Kari rolled her eyes with a smile knowing her mom cares.
The door opened; it wasn't her mom standing in the doorway. Kari gasped with surprise as steel blue eyes looked at her with such sadness.
“How did you get up here?” Kari said surprisingly.
