Hard work

Mark produced a pack of cologne and said, "I told you I'd get you some." Susanna gasped in disbelief, her eyes widening at the unexpected gift. This man was actually behaving like a child, she thought, her mind racing to make sense of his peculiar gesture. What purpose could this absurd offering possibly serve? The cologne's sharp scent wafted through the air between them, an unwelcome reminder of his presumption.. She sighed and caught herself. "Mark," she said, correcting the formal address that had nearly slipped out, "I don't need a pack of men's cologne." Mark chuckled at her expression. Susanna's eyes suddenly lit up with inspiration as she reached for the pack in his hand, which made a distinctive clacking sound when she grasped it. "Actually, I'll take it," she said, her voice tinged with casual determination. The weight of her siblings' tuition fees had been pressing on her mind for weeks now. Recognizing the cologne's obvious value, Susanna quickly calculated how much she might get for it at the upscale consignment shop downtown. The elegant packaging alone suggested it would fetch a decent sum—perhaps enough to cover next month's payment. A warm sense of relief washed over her as she imagined her brother and sister continuing their studies without interruption. She smiled at Mark, genuine gratitude softening her features. "Thanks for it," she said, carefully tucking the expensive cologne into her bag, already planning which potential buyers she would contact first. The chauffeur pulled into a vast clearing that bore no resemblance to either a conference hall or Mark's residence. As Mark stepped out, he stretched his hand toward Susanna, his eyes twinkling with anticipation. "We're taking a helicopter from here," he announced, a hint of excitement coloring his voice. Susanna accepted his outstretched hand, her fingers warm against his as she emerged from the vehicle. Her breath caught in her throat when she realized their transportation wasn't a car at all—a sleek helicopter stood waiting, its blades gleaming in the moonlight. A mixture of thrill and apprehension flickered across her face as she contemplated the unexpected journey ahead. "Have you ever been in a helicopter before?" he asked, his eyes crinkling slightly at the corners as he studied my reaction. The question hung between us, casual yet somehow weighted with anticipation, as if my answer might reveal something significant about me he was eager to discover. She shook her head sideways, then let out a soft chuckle. "I've seen helicopters on television before, and I've glimpsed people flying across the sky." Mike's eyes crinkled as he laughed. "Well, today is your lucky day," he replied, resting his hand on her shoulder, "because we're using a helicopter to get to the conference." As they walked into the plane, Mark turned to her with genuine curiosity. "Why didn't you ever ask for a loan from the company when your family was struggling through all this?" he asked, his voice gentle and free from judgment. Susanna met his gaze directly, her eyes reflecting years of quiet determination. "I prefer to earn what I have through hard work," she answered sincerely. "Begging or borrowing has never sat well with me. That's why I juggled multiple jobs instead. Even now, I'd rather work myself to exhaustion than request financial assistance." This response left Mark speechless for a moment. Each interaction with Susanna revealed another layer of her remarkable character. If he had known he employed someone with such integrity and work ethic, he would have made an effort to know her much earlier. The realization filled him with a mixture of admiration and regret for the missed opportunity. He smiled warmly, his respect for her evident in his expression. "I'd like to invite you to a thanksgiving service at my church this Sunday," he said, his invitation spontaneous yet sincere. "I presume you're a Christian?" "I would love to join you for your service on Sunday," Susanna replied with a warm smile. As the helicopter lifted off the ground, she gazed through the window at the moonlit sky. The landscape below transformed into a tapestry of twinkling lights and shadowy contours. Susanna felt a flutter of excitement in her chest, partly from the gentle lurch of the aircraft and partly from the unexpected invitation she had just accepted. The beauty of the night vista momentarily took her breath away, offering a peaceful contrast to the whirring of the rotors above. Gazing at the panorama beyond her window, Susanna felt a profound sense of connection to the landscape. The interplay of light and shadow across the distant hills stirred something deep within her soul. She knew, with absolute certainty, that this moment would remain etched in her memory forever—a perfect stillness amid life's constant motion. Her fingers lightly traced the windowpane, cool beneath her touch, as if trying to physically grasp the beauty before her. Such moments of clarity were rare in her otherwise tumultuous life, making this peaceful interlude all the more precious. As theychatted in the helicopter she began to be a little more familiar with Mark making it feel like he was a friend and not just her boss.
