The Trial Grounds lay deep within the moonstone forest, where shadows clung to every tree and the air pulsed with magic. No student ever came here willingly. This place was meant for the cursed, the chosen… and the condemned.
Mira stood at the edge of the circle, the pendant around her neck pulsing like a heartbeat. Elias stood behind her, tense, silent. He couldn’t follow her in.
"Only the marked may enter," one of the robed judges announced. "The trial begins at moonrise. Endures until dawn."
Mira swallowed hard. She stepped forward.
The moment her foot touched the glowing runes, the forest shifted.
She was alone.
---
Everything was quiet—until it wasn’t.
The wind carried a whisper. A song. A memory.
"Mira…"
She spun around. The trees had thickened. Shadows moved.
And then—
Her mother stood before her.
Not as a ghost. Not as a memory. Alive. Or something like it.
Hair of midnight. Eyes like hers. A faint glow around her skin.
"Mama…?"
The woman smiled sadly. "They told you I died. That I was weak. But I left to protect you."
Tears stung Mira’s eyes. "I don’t understand. What is this?"
"This is the truth, child. The trial is not to test your strength. It’s to test your heart."
The forest shimmered, and the figure shifted—into Kael.
He walked toward her slowly, shadows flickering in his wake.
"You’ve grown, sister."
Mira froze. "What did you say?"
But he was already fading.
The trees turned again.
And Elias appeared, blood dripping from his hands, eyes wild.
"You shouldn’t love me," he growled. "You’ll never survive what I carry."
Mira fell to her knees, heart racing, pain blooming in her chest.
"None of this is real…" she whispered.
The forest answered with silence.
Then came the final test.
A child appeared, small and pale, eyes glowing like stars.
She looked up at Mira and whispered, "Will you run from the pain… or will you carry it?"
Mira stood slowly, breathing hard. Her voice trembled, but held firm.
"I will carry it. All of it. My past. My blood. My bond. My pain. I will carry it, and I will rise."
The wind stopped.
Light poured through the trees.
And the forest bowed to her.
---
Outside the trial grounds, dawn broke.
The robed judges stepped back in silence as Mira emerged, breathless and shining with silver light.
Elias rushed to her side. "You did it."
She looked up at him, eyes fierce.
"One down. Two to go."
But far off, in Lyra’s private chambers, a mirror cracked violently.
She watched the reflection twist—Mira’s face glowing like an Alpha’s.
Lyra’s smile vanished.
"She’s stronger than I thought."
