THE FINAL TRAIL

451 Words
Moonridge had never felt so silent. Students gathered in hushed clusters, eyes following Mira as she walked through the courtyard. Some stared with fear. Others with awe. A few… with something colder. "She’s passed two trials," whispered one. "No one’s ever made it this far," murmured another. But Mira kept her head high. She could still feel the echoes of the Hall in her mind—whispers and truths she hadn’t yet faced. But this final trial wasn’t about her mind or her heart. It was about her bond. "The Trial of the Soul," the Elders had called it. "The deepest test of all." --- In the sacred grove beyond the academy, a circle of ancient stones shimmered under moonlight. This place wasn’t touched by time—or mercy. Elias stood at the center, bound by golden thread—willingly. Mira’s breath caught when she saw him. "What is this?" An Elder stepped forward. "To face your final trial, you must enter the bond completely. See his pain. Carry his rage. And still return with love." "And if I fail?" "Then the bond shatters. Forever." Mira’s knees threatened to give out. But she stepped into the circle. And the world fell away. --- Suddenly she wasn’t Mira. She was Elias. Pain shot through her chest—his pain. Claws tearing through skin. A father’s voice full of contempt. The endless weight of leadership. The burden of being strong when he wanted nothing more than to collapse. "Weakness kills," his father had always said. She saw Kael, bloodied. Lyra crying as pups. Elias choosing duty over feeling, again and again. Then she saw herself—through his eyes. A fire in the dark. A calm in his chaos. His greatest fear wasn’t losing her. It was being unworthy of her. --- When Mira opened her eyes again, she was on the ground, breathing hard. Tears slid down her face—but they weren’t hers alone. Elias knelt beside her, wiping one away. "You saw everything?" She nodded. "And you still want me?" he asked, voice almost broken. She cupped his face. "I want all of you. Even the shadows." Above them, the moon pulsed once, bright and full. The Elders bowed their heads. "The trial is complete." --- But far away, Lyra watched from her tower, expression unreadable. Until she turned to her spy. "Did she drink it?" The girl nodded. "She took the tea before the trial." Lyra smirked. "Good. Then the bond may be complete… but her time is running out." ---
