I stood there, frozen, as her words replayed in my mind like a curse.
“I want to leave the island.”
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
Couldn’t think. Couldn’t even breathe.
Her voice still echoed in my ears, each syllable hammering against my chest like a blow.
Leave?
She wanted to leave me?
The walls seemed to close in on me.
My world, which revolved solely around her, began to collapse in silence.
My lips parted, but no sound came. By the time I snapped out of my daze, the door had shut behind her with a finality that felt like the end of everything.
“…Sophia,” I whispered to the empty room, but she was already gone.
Panic surged through me, sharp and suffocating.
My feet carried me out of the room before my mind could even catch up.
