Sonya I had been resting, my mind drifting between sleep and waking thoughts, when the door slammed open with such force that I bolted upright. The air shifted immediately. Alan stepped into the room like a tempest unleashed. His jaw tight, his shoulders drawn back rigidly, and his eyes blazing with a fury I had never seen before. My heart stuttered in my chest. His aura was heavy, suffocating even, thick with rage and betrayal. Gone was the man who had looked at me with soft eyes and took me into his home. It was something sacred. What stood before me now was a storm waiting to break. “Alan?” I whispered, already knowing whatever answer I was hoping for wouldn’t come. But instead of responding with kindness or concern, his voice lashed out like a whip. “So you’re Sonya.”
