Chapter 17: The Web Tightens
The hours they spent waiting in the dark, cold room felt like days. Samantha and Daniel sat in silence, the weight of their situation pressing down on them. Every once in a while, Samantha would glance over at the laptop screen in Ivy’s cramped apartment, where the hacker worked tirelessly. She couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched, even though they hadn’t heard anything from Blackwood’s men since they’d made their escape.
Ivy had told them to rest, but Samantha wasn’t able to. Her mind wouldn’t stop running, piecing together fragments of the puzzle they had started to unravel. Project Lazarus. Blackwood. The Forsaken Facility. She couldn’t shake the vision of those twisted experiments, of the lives that had been destroyed for the sake of some unknown purpose. And Victor’s warnings—what did he know? Was he still out there?
"Do you think Ivy will come through for us?" Daniel asked, his voice breaking the silence. He sat across from her, his eyes heavy with fatigue.
Samantha met his gaze, trying to push the exhaustion to the back of her mind. "I hope so. She’s good at what she does, but this… this is different. Blackwood’s been covering his tracks for years. Getting information on him is going to take time."
Daniel leaned forward, his elbows on his knees. "And time’s something we don’t have."
She nodded grimly. Time was running out, and they both knew it. If Blackwood was really as dangerous as Samantha suspected, then every second they wasted was a second closer to catastrophe.
Ivy's voice broke through the tension. "I’ve got something," she said, spinning the laptop around to face them. Her fingers hovered over the keys, but she was staring intently at the screen, as if scanning the results for something they had missed. "This isn’t what I expected, but it’s something."
Samantha and Daniel stood and moved closer, their eyes fixed on the screen.
"What is it?" Daniel asked.
Ivy gestured to the data on the screen. It was a series of encrypted files, too many for Samantha to understand at first glance, but the name at the top caught her attention. "Project Lazarus" was emblazoned across the header in bold letters.
"I’ve been digging around in some old government databases," Ivy explained. "I found a file from years ago that mentioned Lazarus. Blackwood was involved in a classified military project. They were developing a… a biological weapon."
Samantha’s breath caught in her throat. "A weapon?"
Ivy nodded, her fingers still moving over the keyboard. "But it’s not just any weapon. From what I’m reading here, they were experimenting with gene editing. Modifying the human body to create something… something enhanced." She paused, looking up at Samantha and Daniel, her face grim. "Something that could be used as a weapon on a mass scale."
"Wait," Daniel said, his brows furrowing. "Are you saying Blackwood was working with the military on this project?"
Ivy nodded again. "Exactly. They were working on creating super soldiers, enhancing the human body beyond its natural limits. But the project was shut down. Officially, it was called a failure."
Samantha shook her head. "But we know it wasn’t a failure. Blackwood’s still working on it."
"That’s the problem," Ivy said, tapping the screen. "It wasn’t just about soldiers. It was about creating something that could be weaponized. Something that could be controlled, manipulated. And it looks like they’ve found a way to make it work. The files I’ve found point to more than just enhanced strength or speed. They were creating soldiers who could control other people’s minds. Mind control, Samantha."
Samantha’s stomach twisted. The implications of what Ivy was saying were terrifying. Blackwood wasn’t just creating weapons to fight wars—he was creating weapons that could break people’s wills, turn them into puppets.
"And those people—they’re still out there?" Daniel asked quietly.
Ivy hesitated, her fingers pausing over the keyboard. "There’s no direct mention of where these experiments went. But the last file I found—before it was deleted—mentions a facility, a place called ‘The Ark.’"
Samantha felt a chill run down her spine. "The Ark?"
Ivy nodded. "It’s mentioned several times in these files, but there’s nothing concrete. It’s like it was scrubbed from the records. But it’s clear that Blackwood’s trying to pick up where the military left off. And if we want to stop him, we need to find The Ark."
The name felt heavy in Samantha’s mind. The Ark. It could be the key to everything—the heart of Blackwood’s operation, the place where the experiments were continuing.
"Ivy, we need to know everything about The Ark," Samantha said, her voice steady despite the uncertainty swirling inside her. "Where it is. Who’s running it. Everything."
Ivy bit her lip, her eyes flicking between the screen and Samantha. "I’ll keep digging, but it’s going to take time. The data’s heavily encrypted, and there’s a lot of security around it. Blackwood’s not stupid. He’s covering his tracks, and he’s probably watching me right now."
Samantha’s heart raced. "We don’t have much time," she said, a sense of urgency building in her chest. "Whatever’s going on at The Ark, it’s worse than we thought. People are in danger, and we need to stop Blackwood before he can do any more damage."
"I’ll get you the info," Ivy promised. "But you’ll have to be careful. You’re up against something much bigger than just Blackwood. This goes way beyond him."
Samantha nodded, the weight of Ivy’s words settling in her chest. They were up against a force much more dangerous than they had anticipated. A force that had been operating in the shadows for years, and now they had to face it head-on.
"You’ll get the information," Samantha said, her voice hardening. "And we’ll be ready. We don’t have a choice."
With a final nod to Ivy, Samantha and Daniel stepped out of the small apartment and into the dark night once more. They still didn’t know exactly where The Ark was, or what it looked like, but Samantha felt a sense of determination take root inside her. They were close now. Closer than they had ever been to uncovering the truth. But with that truth came a terrible burden.
They had to stop Blackwood. And they had to do it fast.
