Chapter 18: Shadows of the Past
The next few days passed in a blur. Samantha and Daniel moved quickly, always staying one step ahead of Blackwood’s people, who seemed to be closing in on them at every turn. Ivy had promised to get them more information, but every lead they followed only seemed to take them deeper into a labyrinth of lies, deceit, and corruption. The Ark was still out of reach, and time was running out.
Samantha hadn’t slept in what felt like days. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the faces of the victims—people whose lives had been torn apart by Blackwood’s experiments. She saw them in the empty, haunted eyes of the lab subjects, their minds fractured, their bodies altered beyond recognition. And she saw them in her nightmares, the ones that plagued her every time she dared to rest.
But it wasn’t just the nightmares that kept her awake. It was the feeling that something was missing. Some crucial piece of the puzzle she couldn’t see. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Blackwood was still several steps ahead of them, and no matter how hard they tried, they were always going to be playing catch-up.
On the fourth night after their last encounter with Ivy, Samantha sat in the dimly lit motel room, staring at a map of the city. Daniel was across the room, his face drawn and weary, poring over notes they had gathered. They had no idea where The Ark was, or even if it existed in the form they imagined. Every lead had been dead, or worse, deliberately sabotaged. But Samantha knew—she knew they were getting closer.
A knock at the door jolted her out of her thoughts. Her pulse spiked. Daniel’s head whipped around, his hand instinctively going for the gun he kept hidden under his jacket. Samantha’s heart pounded in her chest, but she remained calm.
“Who is it?” she called, her voice steady.
“It’s Ivy,” came the response, muffled by the door. “I’ve got something for you.”
Samantha exchanged a look with Daniel. They hadn’t expected Ivy to show up in person, but given the situation, it made sense. They needed her help more than ever, and if she had any information, they couldn’t afford to wait.
Samantha opened the door cautiously, keeping a hand on the doorknob, her eyes scanning the hallway for anyone following. Ivy stood in front of her, looking tense, but her eyes were sharp, focused.
“I think I’ve found something,” Ivy said, her voice low. She stepped inside quickly, closing the door behind her. “But it’s not going to be easy to get to.”
“What did you find?” Daniel asked, his tone urgent.
Ivy pulled a small flash drive from her pocket and handed it to Samantha. “This. It’s a list of people. High-ranking officials, scientists, and military personnel—all connected to Project Lazarus.”
Samantha’s fingers tightened around the drive. “And?”
“I’ve been tracking their movements,” Ivy continued. “The files mention something about a location called the ‘Redoubt.’ It’s not listed in any public records, but it’s been referenced several times in connection with Lazarus and Blackwood. I think this is where he’s keeping the real project running.”
Samantha felt a chill spread through her. “The Redoubt. Is it a place, or a code for something else?”
“I think it’s a place,” Ivy replied. “But no one knows where it is. It’s been kept off the grid for years, but I have a few leads. If we can track them, we might be able to find it.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. “And how long will that take?”
Ivy paused, her fingers twitching nervously as she looked down at the flash drive in Samantha’s hand. “Not long. Maybe a few days at most. But it’s going to get dangerous. Blackwood will know you’re coming for him, and he’ll stop at nothing to keep The Redoubt hidden.”
Samantha glanced at Daniel, her mind already running through the possibilities. If Ivy was right, this could be their chance to end it. They could finally stop Blackwood’s experiments, but the risks were higher than ever.
“We’ll take the risk,” Samantha said, her voice steady. “We need to stop him before it’s too late.”
Ivy nodded but didn’t seem entirely convinced. “You’ll need backup,” she said, her eyes flicking to Daniel. “I can get you the information, but once you’re in, you’ll be on your own. You can’t trust anyone, not even me.”
“We won’t trust anyone,” Samantha replied. “We’ll handle it ourselves.”
Ivy looked like she wanted to say more, but instead, she just sighed and turned toward the door. “I’ll start working on it right away. Stay safe. And be careful.”
With that, she disappeared into the night, leaving Samantha and Daniel alone in the silence that followed.
“Do you think Ivy’s being honest with us?” Daniel asked after a moment, his voice laced with suspicion.
Samantha wasn’t sure. She wanted to trust Ivy. But in their line of work, trust was a luxury they couldn’t afford.
“I think she’s telling the truth,” Samantha said finally. “But there’s always more beneath the surface. We need to be careful. If Blackwood’s involved, we’re not just dealing with one threat. We’re dealing with everything he’s built over the years.”
“Are we ready for this?” Daniel asked, his voice softer now, the weight of their situation settling in.
Samantha stood up, her back straight, her resolve hardening. “We don’t have a choice. If we don’t stop him now, there won’t be anyone left to save.”
As she spoke, the gravity of their mission hit her like a wave. This wasn’t just about uncovering secrets anymore. This was about saving lives. And if they failed, the consequences would be far worse than they could imagine.
The Ark. The Redoubt. Whatever it was, Samantha knew one thing for certain—this was their last chance to stop Blackwood.
And they had to succeed.
