My mom was a witch, a very powerful witch who could tell the exact date of a person's death.

My mom looked in the mirror for half a day and then suddenly called me to her, "Haley, mommy's going to die, and it's going to be on Christmas Day."

She sounded unusually excited, as if she wasn't the one who was going to die!

My mom was always mysterious every day, but her prophecies were never wrong.

On Christmas Day, Mom looked healthy all the time, and we were decorating the tree together.

She said, "Haley, when I die, you must bury me properly."

I covered her mouth to keep her from saying unlucky things about people!

My mom wasn't talking. She told me to take the candy and hand it out to the neighbors.

I was handing out candy when suddenly Tony from the neighborhood called out to me, "Hurry, Haley, your house is on fire."

By the time I ran home, the fire was huge, and I watched as it destroyed everything I had, my mom, and all the money in the house!

I became an orphan.

My mother was right. She died on Christmas Day.

I have nothing left.
