Aurelia’s POV My mother always said the world was a dangerous place. She said it with the kind of seriousness that made it sound less like advice and more like a warning, a warning she wanted carved on my mind, the kind I dare not question, because questioning it only made her eyes darken with something that looked like fear. “Be home before sunset, Aurelia.” “Don’t wander off.” “Never go near the woods.” Especially the woods. I grew up hearing those rules so often that they became an integral part of my daily life. But at twenty-two, living in Ravencrest City, I thought I had outgrown the rules. I was just an ordinary girl, living a painfully normal life, too normal that I get judged by my peers. I was juggling a part-time job, living in a small apartment with my mother, with no love life. As a matter of fact, I have never been attracted to anybody, not a boy, not a girl. I was just living a boring lonely life. I tugged my jacket tighter around myself as I stood in front of the mirror, studying my reflection. Brown hair pulled into a messy ponytail, clear skin, brown eyes that sometimes feel too sharp for the type of person I am. Nothing unusual, but yet… There was always that feeling, like I was waiting for something. “Aurelia.” My mother’s voice came from the kitchen, sharp and cutting through my thoughts. “Where are you going dressed like that?” I turned, forcing a smile. “Out, with friends.” I responded. Her hand stilled mid-motion. She didn’t turn around immediately, but I saw her shoulders tense. That alone already told me she was about to do what she does all the time; stop me from stepping out of her sight, but I promised myself, I will not allow her this time. “Out where?” she asked quietly. I hesitated. Just for a second. “Camping.” The word landed like a gunshot. She turned so fast that the chair scraped against the floor. “No.” “Mom!!” I said with my voice raised, my eyes shone with rebellion, a tone I have never spoken to her with. “No,” she repeated, more firmly this time. Her gray eyes bore into mine, intense in a way that made my stomach knot. “I told you. You’re not going.” “It’s just one night,” I argued firmly. “Everyone’s going, I’m twenty-two, not twelve.” Her jaw clenched. “You don’t understand.” “That’s the problem,” I snapped, already in a very angry state. “You never let me understand anything. No sleepovers, no trips, no freedom. You watch me like I’ll disappear if you blink.” For a moment, something flickered across her face; panic, guilt, maybe even regret. Then it vanished, replaced by the familiar mask of control. “The world isn’t safe for you,” she said. “Especially at night.” I laughed bitterly. “I live in a city, Mom! Not some alternate universe.” She stepped closer, gripping my shoulders so tightly it almost hurt. “Promise me,” she said calmly, with worry written all over her face “Promise you won’t go near the forest.” I gently pulled away. “I promise I’ll be careful.” It wasn’t a lie. It just wasn’t what she asked. “Honk! Honk!!” The bus we are going on honked from outside. “that’s my ride, bye. I love you” I kissed her cheek with all the excitement in my heart as I ran out of the door, with my packed bag in hand. …… The forest loomed darker than I expected. Tall trees stretched endlessly, their branches tangling together like they were whispering secrets above our heads. The air felt… different, thicker, charged. I tried to brush it off as nerves, but my skin prickled the moment we crossed the border trail. “You okay?” Mia asked, nudging me. “You’ve been quiet.” “Yeah,” I lied. “Just… tired.” But that wasn’t it. Every sound felt louder, every movement caught my attention. I could hear leaves crunching farther than I should. Smell damp earth, pine, and something sharp—almost metallic. The space felt oddly familiar, like something was welcoming or calling me. I shook my head. “Get a hold of yourself, Aureilla, this is supposed to be your getaway” I said to myself. We set up camp near the clearing, laughter filling the air as the sun dipped below the horizon. Fire crackled, stories flowed, beer bottles clinked. This was exactly what I pictured the camping to be. Yet, my chest wouldn’t stop tightening. My friends’ laughter from the campsite was distant, I was feeling differently and my soul was far away. I needed to clear my head. I took a few steps away from my friends, or that was what I thought, but I had wandered into the woods, the forest had swallowed me. I had told my friends I needed some air, a moment alone, only to realize I had gone deep into the woods, I had turned to head back to the camping site, when I felt it, No, I saw it. A movement in the shadows was caught by my eye, a movement that felt deliberate, controlled, planned. My chest tightened, my heart hammering in panic. I took a step back, then froze. A man emerged from behind a huge oak tree, tall, broad, with an air of danger that made the hair on my arms rise. His face was sharp, jawline perfect, dark hair falling into his eyes. But then something happened, his eyes—stormy gray a moment ago—flashed a molten amber. My stomach lurched, I didn’t understand what I was seeing. The color shift was hypnotic, terrifying, and yet… I couldn’t look away. My eyes were glued to his face. He moved closer, each step measured. My instincts screamed at me to run, but something inside my chest pulled me toward him,the pull was strange, it was magnetic. The air around him was different. Rich, wild, musky, warm, and somehow… intoxicating. I realized I could smell him, not just the faint scent of his skin or clothing or hair shampoo, but something deeper, and raw. And it made a heat pulse low in my belly. “I—” I tried to speak, but my voice caught in my throat. My body betrayed me, trembling against my will. The man growled low in his throat, a sound that was both warning and something else I couldn’t name. Then a soft, rumbling purr followed, vibrating through the air. My pulse raced. My mind screamed danger, but my body was confused, aching, wanting, a type of feeling and attraction I have never experienced. He circled me, like a security dog checking visitors. But, with a type of look that felt possessive. His gaze, now molten amber, roamed over me, and instinctively I shivered. My skin felt alive, sensitive, my pulse drummed in my ears. He crouched slightly, nose tilting toward my hair, then shoulders, then neck. Every movement was deliberate, claiming, intimate, and I could not tear my eyes away. “You… you can’t just—” My voice cracked. He reached for me, hands strong and warm. Fingers brushed my jaw, thumb grazing my lips. I gasped, startled by the force and intimacy. My body leaned toward him without permission. My knees weakened, my heart beating fast in rhythm as if it knew something I didn’t. “MATE,” he whispered. The word rolled off his tongue like a vow and a challenge. I froze. Mate? What did that even mean? My chest tightened. My breath hitched. My body felt alive in a way that scared me, but the scent, the heat, the strength, really intoxicating. I wanted to recoil, but every fiber of me pulled forward. He leaned closer, and I felt his heat burning into my skin. His amber eyes burned into mine, powerful, claiming, aware. My lips trembled, my stomach knotted, and a warmth spread that I couldn’t explain. “You are mine,” he growled softly, low and vibrating through the air, “and I will find you.” I wanted to run, wanted to scream, but I couldn’t. Something inside me, raw and wild, answered him. Even though my mind was screaming, my body betrayed me. Then he stepped back, his amber eyes softening just slightly, leaving me weak from the tension and fear. His presence lingered like a storm waiting to break. “Stay close,” he murmured, “I will find you again.” And just like that, he vanished into the shadows, leaving me trembling, breathless, and terrified. My strength couldn't hold me up, the trees became blurry, I tried to stabilize my self by resting o n a tree trunk, but every where went silent the minute I hit the ground.
