Chapter 4

836 Words
The clinic was quieter than usual. Even the hum of the fluorescent lights seemed subdued, like the building itself was holding its breath. Abby sat in the break room, fingers trembling as she flexed her claws back into normal nails. The wolf inside her had retreated—for now—but the raw power lingered, a restless storm beneath her skin. Mariel handed her a cup of water, eyes filled with a mix of concern and awe. “You really did it.” Abby managed a tired smile. “I did what I had to.” Across the hall, Lexy was buried in dusty files and yellowed papers she’d pulled from the clinic’s forgotten archives. The words she found sent a chill through her: “Patients marked by the curse, disappearing without trace... warnings buried deep in history...” Her pulse quickened. The clinic’s past was darker—and more dangerous—than anyone had imagined. Gwen appeared quietly beside her, shadows clinging to her like a cloak. “You’re digging in places some of us wish you wouldn’t.” Lexy met her gaze, determined. “If we don’t know our history, how can we fight what’s coming?” ngie sat behind her desk, the usual manager’s calm replaced by a rare vulnerability. Lexy, Abby, and Gwen gathered around, sensing something important was coming. “I’ve been managing this clinic for over twenty years,” Angie began, her voice steady but tinged with weariness. “Long before most of you arrived. And I wasn’t just hired because of my organization skills.” She paused, eyes drifting to the window where the moon still hung low. “This clinic is a sanctuary—and a prison. For those cursed with gifts no one else understands. I’m one of them.” Abby exchanged a surprised glance with Lexy. “I’ve seen patients come and go, some who embraced their powers and others who lost themselves trying. I made it my mission to keep everyone safe, even if it means keeping secrets.” Abby nodded slowly. “That’s why the clinic stays hidden. Why the world never sees what happens here.” Lexy swallowed hard. “What happens if Harper succeeds?” Angie’s face darkened. “Then everything changes. And none of us will be safe anymore.” --------- The moment Dr. Dedeke’s grip faltered, Harper’s eyes blazed with a fierce crimson light. With supernatural speed, she slipped from her hold, moving like a shadow through the clinic halls. Alarms hadn’t been installed here—not for the supernatural. Abby and Gwen sprinted after her, but Harper vanished around a corner, leaving only the echo of her chilling laugh behind. Lexy stood frozen, heart pounding. The warning Angie gave echoed in her mind. “If Harper succeeds, none of us will be safe.” Outside, the full moon hung heavy, casting the clinic grounds in an eerie silver glow. The game had changed. After Angie’s revelation, the room fell into a heavy silence. Abby ran a hand through her hair, still feeling the lingering pull of the wolf inside. “I thought I was alone in this. Like I was the only one fighting the darkness.” Gwen stepped forward, her eyes softer now. “You’re not. We all carry something. Some of us just hide it better.” Lexy closed the dusty file she’d been reading and looked up. “If the clinic has been protecting the cursed for decades, why haven’t we been told before? Why keep us in the dark?” Angie sighed deeply. “Because knowledge can be dangerous. Fear even more so. People can’t protect themselves from what they don’t understand, and sometimes, it’s safer to keep the truth hidden.” Mariel entered quietly, carrying fresh coffee. “But secrets don’t stay buried forever.” The group exchanged uneasy glances. --------- Outside, the wind whispered through the trees surrounding the clinic, carrying promises and threats alike. The calm before the storm. Late that night, Lexy wandered the clinic halls, restless and unable to sleep. The weight of Angie’s confession and Harper’s escape pressed heavily on her mind. Near the back of the building, behind a faded tapestry of a medical symbol, she noticed a slight draft. Curious, she reached out and pulled the tapestry aside. Behind it was a narrow door, almost invisible in the dim light. Her heart pounded as she turned the old, cold handle and pushed it open. Inside was a small, cluttered room filled with ancient books, faded photographs, and strange artifacts — talismans, old medical instruments twisted with symbols that glowed faintly. On a dusty table lay a leather-bound journal, its pages yellowed but carefully preserved. Lexy flipped it open and began to read, the words revealing the clinic’s true purpose — a refuge, a battleground, and a home for the cursed. Suddenly, footsteps echoed down the hall. Lexy snapped the book shut and melted back into the shadows, heart racing. The secrets she’d uncovered were just the beginning.
