The drive to the De Luca mausoleum felt different from every journey Sofia had taken with Alessandro before.
Perhaps it was because neither of them spoke.
Or perhaps it was because the last thing Alessandro had said kept circling through her mind.
The original vow.
She looked out the window.
The city had fallen quiet beneath the late-night darkness, its lights stretching across the horizon like scattered stars.
Beside her, Alessandro sat rigidly, one hand resting against his thigh while the other held his phone.
He hadn't said a word since they left.
Sofia studied his profile.
"Are you afraid?"
His eyes remained on the road ahead.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised her.
"Of what's inside the grave?"
"Of what we'll discover."
She looked down at her hands.
"Do you think your mother is connected to this?"
"I know she is."
"How?"
"Because she told me once that if I ever found the original vow, I shouldn't read it."
Sofia turned toward him.
"When?"
"The night she supposedly died."
Her breath caught.
"You knew she was alive?"
"No."
"Then how could she have told you that?"
Alessandro's jaw tightened.
"That's what I'm going to find out."
---
The De Luca mausoleum stood on private land beyond the city.
It was old.
Older than Sofia expected.
Black stone walls rose from the earth, surrounded by cypress trees and iron gates.
Two armed men waited outside.
When Alessandro stepped from the car, both immediately straightened.
"Boss."
"Report."
"The outer cameras were disabled at 1:17 a.m."
"How many intruders?"
"At least two."
"Any casualties?"
"No."
Alessandro looked toward the mausoleum.
"Then why did you call me?"
The guard swallowed.
"Because they left something behind."
Sofia stepped closer.
"What?"
The guard looked at her.
His eyes widened slightly.
Then he looked at Alessandro.
Alessandro nodded.
"Tell her."
The guard pointed toward the entrance.
"They wrote her name on the door."
Sofia's stomach dropped.
She walked forward.
There, carved into the black stone, were three words.
SOFIA KNOWS NOTHING.
She stared at them.
Alessandro came to stand beside her.
"Don't touch it."
"I wasn't going to."
"You were thinking about it."
She glanced at him.
"You know me too well."
His eyes lingered on hers.
"Not yet."
The words were quiet.
Almost intimate.
Sofia looked away first.
"Let's go inside."
---
The mausoleum smelled of stone and rain.
Rows of marble plaques lined the walls.
Sofia followed Alessandro down the narrow corridor.
His mother's name was engraved on a large black tomb.
ELENA DE LUCA.
Born 1976.
Died 2015.
Sofia stared at the date.
"That's the year."
Alessandro nodded.
"The year everyone said she died."
He stepped toward the tomb.
The marble slab had been moved.
Not broken.
Carefully removed.
Someone had opened it without damaging the stone.
Luca crouched beside the opening.
"There's nothing inside."
Alessandro frowned.
"Nothing?"
"Not even a coffin."
Sofia's eyes widened.
"Her body isn't here."
"No."
Alessandro's face became unreadable.
He looked into the empty chamber.
"She was never buried here."
Sofia touched his arm.
He looked down at her hand.
"You okay?"
"No."
His expression softened.
"Neither am I."
For a moment, their eyes met.
Sofia's fingers remained against his arm.
Then Alessandro's hand covered hers.
A small gesture.
Barely anything.
Yet it steadied her.
Luca suddenly spoke.
"Boss."
They turned.
He was holding a small metal box.
It had been hidden behind the marble.
Alessandro took it.
There was a lock.
No key.
Sofia stared at it.
Then remembered something.
She reached into her pocket.
The silver key from the theatre.
Her fingers closed around it.
"Try this."
Alessandro looked at her.
"Where did you get that?"
"It was inside your jacket."
His expression changed.
"My jacket?"
"The one you gave me."
He took the key.
It fit perfectly.
The lock clicked.
The lid opened.
Inside was a single envelope.
Black.
Sealed with red wax.
And beneath it lay a photograph.
Alessandro picked up the photograph.
His face went completely still.
Sofia looked over his shoulder.
It showed four people.
Her father.
His father.
Gabriel.
And Elena.
All standing together.
But there was something else.
A fifth person had been deliberately scratched from the photograph.
Someone had taken a knife to the image until the face was almost completely destroyed.
Sofia stared.
"Who is that?"
"I don't know."
"You've never seen the photograph?"
"No."
Luca picked up the envelope.
"There's writing."
He turned it over.
Sofia read it aloud.
For the children who inherit what their parents buried.
Her skin prickled.
"Open it."
Alessandro broke the seal.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
His eyes moved across the words.
Then he stopped.
"What?"
He handed it to Sofia.
She read.
The vow was never a promise of protection.
It was a promise of succession.
When the daughter of Moretti reaches twenty-five, the debt becomes hers.
When the son of De Luca chooses her willingly, the Covenant belongs to them.
Sofia's hands began shaking.
"What does that mean?"
Alessandro didn't answer.
She looked at him.
"Alessandro."
He stared at the paper.
"It means our fathers didn't create the vow to protect you."
"Then why?"
His eyes lifted.
"They created it to bind us."
Sofia felt the room tilt.
"Bind us how?"
Before he could answer, footsteps echoed outside.
Everyone froze.
Luca reached for his weapon.
Alessandro pulled Sofia behind him.
The footsteps stopped.
Then came three slow knocks against the mausoleum door.
Sofia's heart pounded.
Alessandro raised his gun.
"Stay behind me."
The door opened.
A man walked inside.
He was older, dressed in a dark coat.
Sofia didn't recognize him.
Alessandro did.
His gun lowered slightly.
"Vittorio."
The man looked at him.
"You shouldn't have come here."
Alessandro's voice hardened.
"Who opened the grave?"
"People who wanted you to find the letter."
"Why?"
Vittorio looked at Sofia.
"Because the time has come."
Sofia stepped around Alessandro.
"The time for what?"
Vittorio's expression was grim.
"For the Covenant to choose its new leaders."
She shook her head.
"I don't want any part of it."
"That isn't your decision."
Alessandro stepped forward.
"It is now."
Vittorio looked at him.
"You haven't read the final page."
Alessandro's eyes narrowed.
"What final page?"
Vittorio pointed toward the box.
"There are two."
Luca checked.
The bottom of the box appeared empty.
Vittorio smiled faintly.
"Turn it over."
Alessandro did.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was another piece of paper.
And a ring.
Sofia recognized the ring immediately.
Her father's.
Her breath caught.
"That was buried with him."
Vittorio shook his head.
"No."
Sofia stared at him.
"Then where was it?"
"In the possession of the person who betrayed him."
Alessandro picked it up.
His expression changed.
"Who?"
Vittorio looked directly at Sofia.
"Your mother."
Sofia felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath her.
"No."
"She took it the night your father disappeared."
"Why?"
"Because she was the one who made the final choice."
Sofia's voice trembled.
"What choice?"
Vittorio looked between Sofia and Alessandro.
"Whether the two of you would inherit the Covenant..."
He paused.
"Or destroy it."
Silence filled the mausoleum.
Alessandro looked at Sofia.
She could see the question in his eyes.
And for the first time, she understood why her mother had warned her not to trust anyone who said they loved her.
Because perhaps her mother hadn't been warning her about Alessandro.
Perhaps she had been warning her about herself.
Sofia looked down at the ring in Alessandro's hand.
"There's something else."
He looked at her.
She pointed to the inside of the ring.
A tiny inscription had been carved into the metal.
Alessandro turned it toward the light.
Three words.
LOVE IS THE KEY.
His eyes met hers.
Neither spoke.
Because somewhere between a forgotten vow, a stolen kiss and a secret buried for eleven years, Sofia realized something terrifying.
Their fathers might have planned their future before either of them understood what love was.
But whatever happened next...
choosing each other would have to be their decision.
