Sofia stared at the man standing behind her mother.
For one impossible second, she couldn't remember how to breathe.
She knew that face.
Not from memory alone.
From photographs.
From the old portrait hanging in her father's study when she was a child.
From stories her father used to tell.
Matteo Vieri.
Her father's closest friend.
The man who had supposedly died the same night her father disappeared.
The man now standing three metres away with a gun pointed directly at her.
Sofia's mother grabbed her wrist.
"Don't move."
Matteo smiled.
"Your mother always was good at giving orders."
Sofia's voice shook.
"You're dead."
"So I've been told."
He lowered the gun slightly.
"Apparently your family has a habit of burying people who aren't actually dead."
Sofia's mother stepped in front of her.
"Matteo, please."
He looked at her.
"Please?"
His smile disappeared.
"After eleven years, that's what you have to say to me?"
"I did what I had to do."
"So did I."
A gunshot suddenly cracked through the theatre.
Matteo staggered.
Sofia's mother screamed.
But the bullet hadn't hit him.
Alessandro emerged from the darkness.
His gun was raised.
"Step away from her."
Matteo smiled.
"There he is."
Alessandro's eyes became ice.
"You have five seconds."
"Still protecting her."
"Four."
Matteo looked at Sofia.
"Ask him why."
"Three."
"Ask him what your father really wanted from him."
"Two."
Matteo's gaze shifted toward Sofia's mother.
"Ask your mother what happened the night your father died."
"One."
Matteo suddenly threw something toward the floor.
A flash erupted.
Sofia's mother pulled her backward.
Smoke filled the stage.
Alessandro moved instantly.
"Sofia!"
"I'm here!"
His hand found hers.
He pulled her against him.
The smoke began clearing.
Matteo was gone.
So was Sofia's mother.
Sofia spun around.
"Mum?"
Nothing.
"She was right here!"
Alessandro grabbed her shoulders.
"Look at me."
She did.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
His hands moved over her arms, checking for injuries.
When he found none, his shoulders relaxed slightly.
Sofia stared at him.
"You lost her."
"I know."
"You said you'd find her."
"I know."
"She was there, Alessandro."
"I know."
His voice remained calm, but his eyes told her something else.
He was furious.
Not at her.
At himself.
Sofia touched his arm.
"You couldn't have known."
He looked at her hand.
Then at her.
"You shouldn't have been put in that position."
"I wasn't alone."
His eyes lifted.
"What?"
"You came back."
He didn't answer.
Sofia stepped closer.
"You always come back."
Something changed in his expression.
"Always."
The word was barely audible.
For a moment, the theatre disappeared around them.
His fingers closed gently around hers.
Sofia looked down at their hands.
Neither let go.
Then Luca called from the other side of the stage.
"Alessandro."
He turned.
Luca held something in his hand.
A small black envelope.
"It was taped underneath one of the seats."
Alessandro took it.
There was no name.
Only a symbol stamped in red wax.
A serpent wrapped around a key.
Sofia recognized it.
"My father's ring."
Alessandro looked at her.
"You're sure?"
She nodded.
"He wore that symbol on a ring."
Luca's expression darkened.
"That's not a Moretti symbol."
Sofia frowned.
"What is it?"
Alessandro opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
Sofia took it.
Her heart stopped.
It showed her father.
Standing beside Gabriel.
And beside them was Alessandro's father.
All three men were smiling.
On the back were four words.
The vow began here.
Sofia looked at Alessandro.
"What does this mean?"
He stared at the photograph.
"I don't know."
She pulled away.
"You're lying."
His expression hardened.
"I'm not."
"You knew something."
"I knew they worked together."
"How long?"
"Before I was born."
She looked at the photograph again.
"Then why did my father ask you to protect me?"
Alessandro didn't answer.
"Alessandro."
He took a slow breath.
"Because the men in that photograph made a deal."
"What kind of deal?"
"A blood agreement."
Luca looked toward the entrance.
"We shouldn't stay here."
Alessandro nodded.
"We're leaving."
Sofia didn't move.
"Not until you tell me everything."
"We don't have time."
"Then make time."
His gaze met hers.
The words she'd used earlier.
But this time there was no anger in his expression.
Only something close to regret.
"Sofia, your father wasn't simply protecting you from the mafia."
"Then what was he protecting me from?"
Alessandro lowered his voice.
"From becoming part of it."
---
They returned to the safe house just before dawn.
Neither spoke during the drive.
Sofia sat beside the window, holding the photograph.
She couldn't stop looking at her father's face.
He looked happy.
Young.
Almost carefree.
It was the last expression she remembered seeing before everything changed.
Alessandro sat across from her when they entered the villa.
Luca went into the adjoining room to make a phone call.
Sofia remained standing.
"Tell me."
Alessandro looked exhausted.
"There are things I don't know."
"But there are things you do know."
"Yes."
"Then start there."
He removed his jacket.
Placed his gun on the table.
Then looked at her.
"Your father and my father weren't enemies."
Sofia frowned.
"What?"
"They were partners."
She stared at him.
"Partners in what?"
"An organization that existed before either of us was born."
"How powerful?"
"Powerful enough that governments have spent years trying to find it."
Sofia's stomach turned.
"What was it called?"
Alessandro's jaw tightened.
"The Covenant."
She waited.
"And the vow?"
"Was part of the Covenant."
Sofia slowly understood.
"My father made you swear to protect me."
"Yes."
"Because of the Covenant."
"Yes."
She shook her head.
"Then it wasn't about me."
"It became about you."
"When?"
His eyes met hers.
"The moment I realized your father wasn't asking me to protect a piece of his empire."
"What was he asking you to protect?"
Alessandro stepped closer.
"You."
Her heart skipped.
He continued.
"Your father knew the Covenant would eventually come for you."
"Why?"
"Because you inherited something from him."
"What?"
"I don't know."
Sofia laughed bitterly.
"That's convenient."
"It's the truth."
"Then why does everyone seem to know more about my life than I do?"
Alessandro's expression softened.
"Because people have been protecting secrets instead of protecting you."
She looked away.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Alessandro noticed.
He lifted his hand.
She expected him to wipe it away.
Instead, he stopped just before touching her.
"May I?"
Sofia nodded.
His thumb gently brushed the tear from her cheek.
The touch was almost painfully tender.
She looked into his eyes.
"Why are you so different with me?"
He was silent.
"Alessandro?"
"Because you're the only person who makes me forget what I'm supposed to be."
Her breath caught.
He seemed surprised by his own words.
For a moment neither moved.
Then Sofia whispered,
"That's dangerous."
"I know."
"Why?"
His gaze dropped briefly to her lips.
"Because I don't want to remember."
Her heart hammered.
He leaned closer.
Sofia closed the distance.
Their lips met.
This kiss was different from the one in the passage.
There was no hesitation.
No confusion.
Just a quiet acknowledgement of something neither was ready to name.
His hand settled at her waist.
Sofia's fingers curled lightly into his shirt.
The kiss lasted only a few seconds before Alessandro pulled away.
Their foreheads touched.
"We shouldn't."
Sofia's breathing was unsteady.
"You keep saying that."
"Because it's true."
"Then why do you keep kissing me?"
His eyes closed briefly.
"Because I'm losing the argument."
She smiled despite herself.
"Good."
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
Then his phone rang.
The moment shattered.
Alessandro answered.
"De Luca."
Silence.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Sofia watched him carefully.
"Where?"
Another pause.
"I'll be there."
He ended the call.
"Who was it?"
"Luca."
"And?"
Alessandro looked toward the window.
"Someone broke into the De Luca family mausoleum."
Sofia frowned.
"What does that have to do with us?"
He looked at her.
"They didn't steal anything."
"Then what did they do?"
His voice dropped.
"They opened my mother's grave."
Sofia went cold.
Alessandro picked up his gun.
Then he looked at her.
"There's something inside that grave they desperately want."
"What?"
His eyes met hers.
"The original vow."
And suddenly Sofia understood.
The truth wasn't buried with their parents.
It had been waiting for them.
