Cracks beneath control

The warning lingered in Elena’s mind long after Victoria walked away. “Let’s see how long you can keep this up.” It didn’t sound like something that would simply fade. It sounded like a promise. Elena forced herself to breathe normally, even as her chest tightened. Around her, the gala had returned to life—soft laughter, clinking glasses, elegant conversations—but everything felt different now. Heavier. More dangerous. “She’s not going to stop, is she?” Elena muttered quietly. Adrian didn’t look at her immediately. “No.” At least he was honest. Elena exhaled slowly. “Great.” They stood side by side, still holding hands for appearance, but now Elena could feel something else in his grip. Tension. Subtle. But there. “Does she hate me,” Elena asked, “or you?” Adrian’s lips curved faintly. “Both.” Elena blinked. “That’s reassuring.” He finally looked at her. “You handled yourself well.” Elena let out a small laugh. “I almost forgot how to breathe.” “But you didn’t.” She looked at him. “And you just stood there and watched.” “I was observing.” “Observing?” she repeated. Adrian’s gaze didn’t waver. “I needed to see how you’d respond under pressure.” Elena stared at him in disbelief. “So that was a test for you too?” “Yes.” Her chest tightened slightly. “And if I had failed?” Adrian didn’t answer immediately. When he did, his voice was calm. “You didn’t.” That wasn’t an answer. But Elena didn’t push. Because something about his tone told her… He had been serious. Very serious. Before she could say anything else, a group of guests approached them. “Adrian,” one of the men said with a polite smile. “Congratulations.” “Thank you,” Adrian replied smoothly. Elena forced a polite smile as she was introduced again. More names. More faces. More questions. She answered carefully. Stayed calm. Played the role. But it was exhausting. Every word felt like it had to be perfect. Every expression controlled. Every reaction measured. After what felt like hours, Adrian leaned slightly closer. “Come,” he murmured. Elena didn’t argue. She needed air. --- The balcony outside was quiet. Cool night air wrapped around her instantly. Elena stepped forward, gripping the railing lightly. “Finally,” she whispered. Her shoulders relaxed just a little. Adrian stepped beside her. Neither of them spoke for a moment. The city lights stretched endlessly in front of them. “I didn’t expect it to be this intense,” Elena admitted. Adrian glanced at her. “It only gets worse.” She turned to him. “That’s not comforting.” “It’s realistic.” Elena sighed. “Your family is… something.” “That’s one way to put it.” She hesitated. “Your father doesn’t like me.” “No.” “That was quick.” “He doesn’t like anything he doesn’t control.” Elena frowned slightly. “And you?” Adrian looked out at the city. “I don’t like being controlled.” That much was obvious. She studied him for a moment. “You really went against him tonight.” “Yes.” “For me.” The words slipped out before she could stop them. Adrian’s gaze shifted to her. “For the arrangement.” Elena felt something small tighten in her chest. “Right.” Of course. The arrangement. That’s all this was. She looked away. The night air suddenly felt colder. “You’re doing this for your own reasons,” she said quietly. “Yes.” “And I’m just… part of the solution.” Adrian didn’t deny it. “You agreed to it.” Elena nodded slowly. “I did.” Silence settled again. But this time, it felt different. Heavier. More personal. Before either of them could say anything else— The balcony door opened. Elena turned. Victoria stepped outside. Of course. She closed the door behind her slowly. Her eyes moved between them. “Well,” she said softly. “This looks… intimate.” Elena straightened. “It’s just air.” Victoria smiled slightly. “Of course.” She walked closer. Graceful. Confident. Dangerous. “You’re doing surprisingly well,” she said to Elena. Elena didn’t respond immediately. “Thank you.” Victoria tilted her head. “But I wonder…” Elena’s stomach tightened. “Wonder what?” Victoria’s smile sharpened. “How long before you slip?” Elena held her gaze. “I won’t.” Victoria chuckled softly. “They all say that.” Elena frowned. “They?”ll Victoria’s eyes flickered briefly to Adrian. Then back to Elena. “You think you’re the first girl to stand where you are?” The question hit unexpectedly. Elena blinked. “What does that mean?” Victoria’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “It means,” she said slowly, “this isn’t new.” Elena’s heart skipped. Her gaze shifted to Adrian. But his expression remained unreadable. Calm. Controlled. Too calm. Victoria stepped closer. “Girls come and go,” she continued softly. “But this world…” She gestured around them. “…this world doesn’t change for anyone.” Elena’s chest tightened. This didn’t sound like a simple warning. It sounded like experience. Like truth. “Is that what you think I am?” Elena asked quietly. “Someone who will come and go?” Victoria’s smile softened—just slightly. “Not think,” she said. “Know.” The words landed hard. Elena felt something stir inside her. Something stubborn. Something defiant. She straightened slightly. “Then you don’t know me.” Victoria’s eyes narrowed just a fraction. “Maybe not,” she admitted. “But I know him.” Her gaze shifted to Adrian again. “And that’s enough.” Elena followed her gaze. Adrian stood there. Silent. Still. Unmoved. That bothered her. Because for the first time… She wasn’t sure what he was thinking. Victoria stepped back. “Well,” she said lightly, “enjoy the night while it lasts.” She turned toward the door. But before leaving— She paused. And looked at Elena one last time. “There are things about Adrian you don’t know,” she said quietly. A chill ran down Elena’s spine. “And when you find out…” A small pause. Then— “You might wish you never said yes.” The door closed behind her. Silence filled the balcony. Elena stood there, frozen. Her heart pounding. Her thoughts racing. Slowly… She turned to Adrian. Her eyes searched his face. “What did she mean?” she asked. Adrian didn’t answer. He simply looked out at the city again. Calm. Silent. Unreadable. And that silence… Told Elena something was very, very wrong.
