A deal with consequences

The tension didn’t fade after Elena’s decision. If anything, it settled deeper into the room—quiet, heavy, and impossible to ignore. “I’ll stay.” Those two words changed everything. Not just for Adrian. But for her. Because the moment she said them… she felt it. The shift. The wall rising. The trust breaking. Elena stood still for a second longer, then turned away without another word. “I need air,” she muttered. This time, Adrian didn’t stop her. He just watched as she walked past the crowd, past the whispers, past the curious stares that followed her like shadows. Her heels clicked against the polished floor, each step faster than the last. She didn’t stop until she reached a quiet hallway far from the main hall. The noise faded. The pressure eased—just a little. Elena leaned against the wall, letting out a shaky breath. “What did I get myself into…” she whispered. Her chest still felt tight. Her thoughts still a mess. But one thing was clear now. This wasn’t just a contract. This was a game. And she had just agreed to keep playing. A soft sound of footsteps echoed behind her. Elena didn’t turn. “I said I needed space.” “I’m not Adrian.” The voice made her look up. It wasn’t Victoria. And it definitely wasn’t Adrian. A young man stood a few steps away, hands casually in his pockets. He looked relaxed. Almost too relaxed for someone standing in the middle of all this tension. His eyes studied her with quiet curiosity. “Who are you?” Elena asked, straightening slightly. He smiled faintly. “Daniel.” A pause. Then— “Adrian’s younger brother.” Elena blinked. “Oh.” That explained the resemblance. The same sharp features. But softer. Less guarded. “Did you come to… test me too?” she asked, a hint of sarcasm in her voice. Daniel chuckled lightly. “No.” He stepped closer, but not too close. “I came because you looked like you needed a break.” Elena let out a small breath. “That obvious?” “A little.” She gave a weak smile. “Well… thanks, I guess.” Silence settled between them for a moment. But it wasn’t uncomfortable. Not like before. Daniel leaned slightly against the wall beside her. “You handled that pretty well,” he said. Elena let out a short laugh. “Did I?” “Better than most would.” She shook her head. “I felt like I was about to collapse.” “But you didn’t.” Elena glanced at him. “You’re different from your brother.” Daniel smiled. “I hear that a lot.” She studied him for a moment. “You knew about all this, didn’t you?” “The engagement?” he asked. “Yes.” Daniel nodded. “Yeah.” Elena’s chest tightened again. “Everyone knew… except me.” Daniel didn’t deny it. “That’s usually how these things go.” Elena frowned. “That’s not fair.” “No,” he agreed. “It’s not.” She looked down at her hands. “I feel like I walked into something I don’t understand.” Daniel’s expression softened slightly. “That’s because you did.” Elena sighed. “Great.” Another moment of silence passed. Then Daniel spoke again. “You should be careful.” Elena looked up. “Careful of what?” He hesitated. Then— “This family.” Her brows pulled together. “That sounds like a warning.” “It is.” Elena felt a small chill. “Your brother is part of that family.” “Yes.” “And I just signed a contract to marry him.” Daniel nodded slowly. “Which is why I’m saying this.” Elena’s chest tightened slightly. “What am I missing?” she asked. Daniel looked at her carefully. As if deciding how much to say. Then— “My brother doesn’t do things without a reason.” Elena frowned. “I know that.” “But you don’t know all his reasons.” The words lingered. Heavy. Uncomfortable. Elena crossed her arms slightly. “What are you trying to say?” Daniel’s gaze didn’t waver. “I’m saying… this isn’t just about avoiding an arranged marriage.” Her heart skipped. “What do you mean?” Before Daniel could answer— A voice cut through the hallway. “Elena.” She turned. Adrian stood at the end of the corridor. His expression unreadable. His presence… commanding as always. Daniel straightened slightly. “Well,” he said quietly, “that’s my cue.” Elena frowned. “You’re just leaving?” Daniel gave a small smile. “For now.” He paused. Then added softly— “Just remember what I said.” And with that, he walked past Adrian and disappeared down the hallway. Elena watched him go, her thoughts spinning again. This isn’t just about avoiding an arranged marriage. The words echoed in her mind. Slowly, she turned back to Adrian. He was watching her. Closely. “How much did he say?” Adrian asked. Elena crossed her arms. “Not enough.” A brief pause. Then— “What aren’t you telling me?” she asked. Adrian didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked toward her slowly. Each step steady. Measured. Controlled. “Elena—” “No,” she cut in. “I’m serious.” Her eyes locked onto his. “Because at this point, I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t know what’s really going on.” Adrian stopped in front of her. Close. Too close. “You know what matters,” he said. “That’s not true.” “It is.” Elena shook her head. “No… it’s not.” Her voice softened slightly. “There’s something else.” Adrian’s gaze darkened. But he didn’t deny it. Again. And that was enough. Elena’s chest tightened. “What is it?” she asked quietly. A long silence followed. Then— Adrian spoke. Low. Calm. But heavier than before. “If I told you everything…” A pause. Then— “You wouldn’t have signed the contract.” The words hit like a blow. Elena stared at him. Her heart pounding again. “What does that mean?” she whispered. Adrian held her gaze. Unflinching. “It means,” he said, “You’re already too involved.” The hallway suddenly felt colder. Smaller. Trapped. Elena took a slow step back. Her mind racing. Her heart unsettled. Because now… It wasn’t just about what she didn’t know. It was about what he was still hiding. And the fact that— Whatever it was… It was big enough to make her walk away. If she had known. Which meant one thing. She was already deeper in this than she ever should have been.
