An offer she didn’t expect

Elena barely slept that night. The rain had stopped sometime before dawn, but the sound of it still echoed faintly in her mind. She kept replaying the moment in the street—the screeching car, the cold gaze of the man who had nearly run her over, and the strange offer he had made. Adrian Vale. Even thinking the name made her stomach twist. She had searched him on her phone as soon as she reached her tiny apartment. The internet was filled with his photos. Business magazines called him a genius. Articles praised how he had expanded Vale Industries into one of the most powerful companies in the country before the age of thirty. Powerful. Rich. Dangerous, some blogs said. And yet he had given her his card. Elena stared at the silver card lying on the small wooden table beside her bed. “Come to my office tomorrow.” His words echoed in her mind again. Why would a billionaire want to help a random college girl he almost ran over? It didn’t make sense. Elena sat up, running a hand through her messy hair. Maybe it was a joke. Maybe he had already forgotten about it. Or maybe… it was her only chance to save her education. She looked at the clock. 8:07 a.m. Her university classes started in an hour, but her mind wasn’t on school. It was on that card. After a long moment of silence, she grabbed it. “Fine,” she muttered softly. “If he’s playing some kind of game, I’ll find out.” --- Two hours later, Elena stood outside the tallest building she had ever seen up close. The glass tower stretched high into the sky, reflecting the morning sun. At the front entrance, large silver letters read: VALE INDUSTRIES Her heart began beating faster. People dressed in expensive suits walked in and out of the building confidently. Luxury cars pulled up to the entrance every few minutes. Elena suddenly felt painfully aware of her clothes. Her jeans were clean but old. Her white blouse had been ironed carefully that morning, but it still looked cheap compared to what everyone else was wearing. For a moment, doubt crept into her chest. You don’t belong here. She almost turned around. But then she remembered the number on the letter. $18,500. Her fists tightened slightly. “I’m doing this,” she whispered. Taking a deep breath, Elena walked inside. --- The lobby was enormous. White marble floors. Tall ceilings. A massive chandelier hanging above. The entire place smelled like expensive perfume and polished wood. Elena approached the front desk nervously. A woman with perfect makeup looked up from her computer. “Yes?” Elena cleared her throat. “I… I have a meeting with Adrian Vale.” The receptionist’s expression changed slightly. “Your name?” “Elena Carter.” The woman typed something quickly. To Elena’s surprise, her eyes widened a little. “Mr. Vale is expecting you.” Elena blinked. He remembered? The receptionist pressed a button. “Take the elevator to the top floor. His assistant will meet you.” Elena nodded quickly. “Thank you.” She walked toward the elevator, her heart pounding harder with every step. The doors opened silently. She stepped inside and pressed the button for the top floor. The elevator rose smoothly. Her reflection stared back at her from the mirrored walls. “You can do this,” she murmured quietly. But deep down, she had no idea what she was walking into. --- The elevator doors opened into a quiet, elegant hallway. A tall woman in a gray suit stood waiting. “You must be Elena,” she said. Elena nodded. “Yes.” “Mr. Vale is in his office. Follow me.” They walked down the hallway together. Every step made Elena more nervous. Finally, they stopped in front of large double doors. The assistant knocked once. “Mr. Vale, she’s here.” A calm voice answered from inside. “Send her in.” The doors opened. Elena stepped inside slowly. The office was huge, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the entire city. Behind a large black desk sat Adrian Vale. He looked exactly like he had the night before—calm, sharp, completely in control. His dark eyes lifted to meet hers. “You came.” Elena swallowed. “You told me to.” He gestured toward the chair in front of his desk. “Sit.” She obeyed cautiously. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Adrian studied her carefully, as if evaluating something. “You’re a student at Northbridge University,” he said. Elena’s eyes widened. “How do you know that?” “You mentioned tuition,” he replied calmly. “And I checked.” Of course he had. A man like him probably had people who could find anything within minutes. Elena shifted slightly in her seat. “So… why did you ask me to come?” Adrian leaned back in his chair. “Straight to the point. I like that.” He folded his hands together. “You owe eighteen thousand five hundred dollars.” “Yes.” “I can pay it.” Her breath caught. Just like that? “But,” he continued calmly, “nothing in life is free.” Of course. Elena’s suspicion returned instantly. “What do you want from me?” For a moment, Adrian didn’t answer. He simply watched her. Then he said something that made her heart stop. “I want you to marry me.” Silence filled the office. Elena blinked. Once. Twice. “I’m sorry… what?” Adrian’s expression remained perfectly serious. “A contract marriage.” Elena stared at him as if he had lost his mind. “You don’t even know me!” “That’s correct.” “And you want to marry me?” “Yes.” Her brain struggled to process the situation. “This is crazy.” Adrian stood up and walked slowly toward the window. “The marriage would only last one year,” he explained calmly. “You would live in my house and appear with me at certain public events.” Elena shook her head. “No. Absolutely not.” Adrian turned to face her again. “In return,” he said quietly, “your tuition will be fully paid. Not just this semester. All of it.” Elena froze. Her mind raced. “All… four years?” “Yes.” Her chest tightened. That was more money than she could ever imagine having. But still… “Why me?” she demanded. Adrian walked back toward the desk. “My family wants me to settle down,” he said. “They’re pressuring me to marry someone from another powerful family.” Elena frowned slightly. “So marry them.” “I don’t want to.” “So you decided to marry a stranger instead?” Adrian’s lips curved slightly. “Exactly.” Elena stood up suddenly. “This is insane.” She grabbed her bag. “I’m leaving.” She turned toward the door— “Twenty thousand.” Her steps stopped. Adrian’s voice was calm behind her. “I’ll give you twenty thousand in addition to paying your tuition.” Elena slowly turned back. Her heart pounded violently. “That’s not funny.” “I’m not joking.” Her thoughts spiraled. Twenty thousand dollars. Her tuition. A chance to finish school without worrying about money again. All she had to do was… Marry him. But it wasn’t real. Just a contract. Just one year. Still… It felt dangerous. Elena looked into Adrian’s unreadable eyes. “You expect me to decide right now?” “No,” he said. “I expect you to think about it.” He slid a document across the desk. “A contract.” Elena stared at it. Her future might be written on those pages. And suddenly she realized something terrifying. If she signed it… Her life would never be the same again.
