Amelia stood in the living room doorway, arms crossed over her chest, watching Enzo lift his duffel bag into the trunk of Ale’s SUV. It glinted in the morning sun, dust motes dancing across the windshield. “Come on,” Valenie said brightly behind her, sliding into her arm. “It’ll be good for you. A break. A reset.” Amelia closed her eyes. “I don’t know.” Valenie squeezed her hand. “You don’t escape from him by staying behind.” Enzo glanced through the car window at Amelia. His jaw was set. No softened gaze, no temptation in his eyes. Just control. She shivered, took a step forward.
