The Meeting

Jonah’s P.O.V 7:30am: Is already Monday and I have to be at this job interview at 8:30am. ‘Why is it Monday?’ I think to myself as I get out of to get ready. I just moved here from NY and don’t think I regret it yet. It is a lot quieter here than what I’m used to, living in the city for so long, does that to you. After everything that happened last year, I was desperate and welcoming to the idea of making the change. As I’m walking towards the door of my first job interview this week, I see two women in front of me and I rush forward to open the door. As I hold the door open for them. I look up noticing one is short with curly hair but I get stuck on the woman pulling the curly hair one behind her. “Ladies” is all I can say as they walk pass me. She smiles and keeps pulling her friend forward. I rush after the mystery woman, as her and her friend get into the elevator. I walk behind them to ride the elevator and maybe get her number. Walking behind her, I look at her. She is wearing a high-waisted khaki slack that give me a perfect view of her perfect ass. Her slacks are paired with a striped blouse with short sleeves and half turtle necked. Her outfit highlighted her curves perfectly; her black hair was twisted up into a bun on top of her head, giving off that elegant vibe. She smells of lavender, mixed with some other kind of flowery scent. When I saw her lips, my mouth watered imagining what her lips would taste like. In the elevator, I lean over her pressing the button for the sixth floor, just wanting to be closer to her and wanting to see her reaction to me being close. She doesn’t even flinch and just looked at her friend not thinking that I noticed, her friend was still staring at me. I was so distracted by her that I didn’t even attempt to speak to her and much less trying to get her number. After the women get off the elevator, I go up one more floor. Getting off the elevator, there’s a girl at a desk “Excuse me, where can I find Mr. Jenkins’ office?” I ask. “Just go down that hallway, his office is the last one on the right.” She answers, pointing to the hallway on my left. I walk down the hallway as I reach the door and knock. The door opens to an average height man with white hair. “Hi, I’m Jonah Davis”, I say, reaching my hand out. “Oh yes, come in Mr. Davis” he says, I assume that this is Mr. Jenkins and he takes my outreached hand and shakes it, moving aside to allow me into the office. “Honestly Mr. Davis, all I need to know is if you have any questions for me?” Mr. Jenkins asks. “How much are you offering?” I ask him. Mr. Jenkins walks around his desk and writes something down on a piece of paper and passes it to me. “I see” I smile. “Great!” Exclaims Mr. Jenkins, clapping his hands together, but I stop him from celebrating. “Before I accept your offer…” I pause. “What is it?” he asks carefully. “I need to feel the place, I refuse to work in a place that I don’t feel comfortable in” I explain. “So what can I do to help?” He asks. “Would it be possible for me to get a walk through and spend a few hours around the department?” Not many companies feel comfortable enough with such requests. Mr. Jenkins comes from behind his desk, “follow me” he says, not even looking at me and walking out of his office. I follow him taking the stairs, going down one floor and go straight to a closed door, Mr. Jenkins knocks once and opens it. Immediately my ears are flood with melodic laughter coming from inside the office. “Good morning Charlie” says Mr. Jenkins, when he pauses, “Miss Thompson.” “Good morning Mr. J, just came to remind Miss Charlie about the meeting today” comes the response. I’m standing outside the office behind Mr. Jenkins and the door, which is preventing my view inside the office and hiding me at the same time, not allowing me to see who’s voices I’m hearing. When the short woman with curly hair from earlier comes to the door trying to sneak out past Mr. Jenkins, when she notices me and the door opens enough to allow me a better view into the office. “Oh sorry…” curly hair says looking up and staring, completely forgetting her escape. “Thanks, Bonnie for the reminder” comes the voice of the woman of my dreams. Curly rushes out pass me saying something that I didn’t catch as my attention goes to the woman. Words were said but I’m pretty sure that I no longer speak English, just her, she is my new language. I step forward trying to get closer to her, when Mr. Jenkins says my name and snaps me out of my trance. Mrs. Right reaches out her hand and I take it, “Mr. Davis this is Miss Charlotte Perez, the Executive Director of Accounts Management and Acquisitions” Mr. Jenkins introduces, and I’ve never wanted to shake someone’s hand as much I wanted to shake hers right now. I mustered some self-control and let go of her hand, instead of using her hand to pull her to me. “Nice to meet you Miss Perez” I say and can’t help the smile. “Likewise” she smiles at me, is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen, and in that moment I wanted nothing more than to keep that smile on her face. We keep eye contact until Mr. Jenkins says something and she turns to him with a confused expression, which now replaces her beautiful smile. “Excuse me Tom, you lost me” she says, looking back at me. “Oh you’re showing Mr. Davis here, around for me” he tells her and I think I love this man, and I smile. “Oh okay, sure” she says and my smile disappears at her tone. Instantly I think, I’m bothering her, taking her away from her actual work. Now wishing I could take it back and tell Jenkins that I accept the position, but I need to make sure I want to work here. Jenkins walks out of the office leaving us alone facing each other, and I feel guilty. “I’m sorry, I didn’t want to become a bother to anyone” I say to Miss Perez, apologetically. ‘Miss…at least I know she isn’t married’ I think. “Mr. Davis please don’t apologize, you haven’t done anything wrong and you aren’t a bother.” I know she’s just trying to be polite, her voice caressing me and suddenly I hate that she doesn’t call me by my first name. “Please call me Jonah” I hear myself say. “Huh?” She says, looking at me. “Please call me Jonah, I prefer it” I repeat. “You can call me Charlie” she says with a tight smile. I have spent the day, up to lunch with Charlie. We go to lunch at a restaurant next to the office building, apparently we are meeting someone. We get there and Curly is already sitting at a table, when she sees us. Curly stares at me again, which is becoming annoying and is rude but I say nothing. “Jonah this is Bonnie, Bonnie this is Jonah…he’s my new partner” Charlie hesitates at the last part of her introductions. She takes a seat across from her friend while I’m forced to seat in between them. “You move fast” comes Curly’s comment and I have to stop myself from laughing at Charlie’s friend’s assumption. ‘If only’ I think. Charlie looks mortified and I feel I have to save her, as she blushes and she looks just so cute. “Although, I wouldn’t mind being involved with such a smart woman, I believe she meant on the new project” I say, but she makes a face which confuses me. “Aah, Charlie you need to more clear next time” says Curly. As we eat, Charlie barely speaks, unless is to tell Curly to stop being inappropriate. Curly keeps asking me a whole bunch of questions and I keep looking at Charlie, but she barely looks up from her food. “So, Mr. Hot and Handsome you married?” Curly asks. “No” I answer. “Why not?” She asks. “I guess I just haven’t found the one for me” I shrug and look at Charlie. “Are you homosexual?” She asks raising her eyebrows at me. I don’t even answer, just shake my head at her and go back to eating. “What?!?” Curly exclaims “We have to ask nowadays” she laughs and I smile. Bonnie isn’t so bad after she stops staring at you, like you’re a side show. We finish lunch and go back to the office. A few minutes after being at Charlie’s office, Jenkins comes to get me. “So, Mr. Davis have you made a decision on whether you will be joining our team?” Jenkins asks me in front of Charlie. “I’m interested…” I respond, and can’t help as my eyes go to Charlie and smirk, as I see her look up with a confused look on her face. “I thought you were already hired” Charlie states looking at us. “He was offered the position, but Mr. Davis wanted to see the environment and the way we worked before accepting” answers Mr. Jenkins. Charlie face changes from confused to annoyed as she speaks “I see… quick question.” She pauses “Why have me believe he was already an employee?” I answer before Jenkins had the chance to, “Because I asked him to, I didn’t want to be treated differently than an employee, so I could see the real work environment and since I would be working with you…Mr. Jenkins decided you would be the best candidate to show me around” I shrug, feeling a bit guilty for deceiving her. “I see” is all she says before we leave her office. Mr. Jenkins and I go up the steps and to his office. As we entered his office he went to seat behind his desk and signaled for me to sit across from him. I sit and Jenkins just watched me as I sat and waited for him to speak first. “Your interest in the position, is it because of Miss Charlotte?” He asks me. “No, I always had the interest in the position which is why I sent in my resume” I answer, a bit irritated that he saw right through, but not lying, I’m was definitely interested in the position in itself. Jenkins sighs and shakes his head “Now that my doubts about the position are settled… Do you have an interest in Miss Charlotte??” “You can say I do but honestly can you blame me? Or any man with eyes? But she’s beautiful, smart, kind and fair…was she the reason for my acceptance of the position? Of course! But because she actually took the time to show me how your company works and she didn’t hesitate to teach when I wasn’t understanding something… and I hope that your company as whole is as inclusive and helpful as Miss Perez was today” I finish and using her last name to make it clear that my work and personal life do not affect each other. “So should we get started on the new hire paperwork?” Asks Jenkins with a smile. “Sure” I say. As I fill out all the paperwork, we speak. “So any pointers?” I ask Jenkins. “On?” “On how to approach Miss Charlie” I look at him expectantly. “Oh, she’s very family oriented but I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of her dating…” he thinks for a moment. “She mostly works and her family and Bonnie”. “Alright, thanks” I say but before I say anything else “Don’t hurt her, and make sure it doesn’t affect your work or hers…” he finishes. I nod in agreement. We finish all the paperwork, “be here tomorrow at 8:30am” Jenkins says handing me my badge and office keys. “Thank you, Mr. Jenkins” I say as I reach out my hand and he shakes it.
