The Permission

Jonah chased after me, grabbing me by the shoulders. “Talk to me, I’m sorry I shouldn’t have…don’t walk away.” Jonah said as he turned me to face him. Looking down at my hands, I refused to look up and have those beautiful eyes see right through me. I know if we made eyes contact, we would end up doing more than just kissing. Jonah waited for me to say something, we stood there for what seemed like forever, as he stared at me and as I fought the urge to let him sweep me away. I tried to walk around him, but he stops me again and pulls me into him in an embrace. My heart pounding in my chest in tandem with his. After a few minutes of just basking in his warmth, I forced myself to push Jonah away, although I wanted to stay in his arms. I finally look up at him, and seemed like he could see what was going through my head. “I have to go back…” I say letting my voice trail of and walking around him. Jonah grabs my hand as I go to walk around him, “…” he just looks at me searching my face. I take a breath, letting it out “We can’t” I say looking up at the night’s sky, and then at him. Jonah reaches out and wipes away tears I didn’t know had slipped down my face. “No” is all he says in a low voice. Jonah holds on to both my hands as we just stand on the sidewalk looking at each other. A car passed us, snapping me out of the trance his eyes put me under. I let go of his hands turning around and walking to the front door of my house, and before going in I looked back at Jonah. Jonah stood in the same spot not moving just looking at me. I look away and finally walked into my house and straight to my room closing the door, I drop on my bed and scream into pillow. “Ugh! I’m so stupid” I say aloud to myself. 8:00am Jordan and Mariel car pulled today with Joey, Jordan’s friend. Joey’s mother, Margaret, always helped out whenever she could. I really think this lady pities me because I’m a single mom; is like that automatically makes me some type of undesirable wench. Overall Margaret is a gem, minus the pity looks, she is super helpful and I definitely appreciate her more than she knows, especially today. I honestly did not want to go to work and had half a mind to call off. I was definitely not ready to see Jonah and I hadn’t even told Bonnie what happened yet; I was dreading everything about today, including the presentation to the board. Ugh… Ismael and I got into the car and drove to his school. “Are you alright?” “huh?” I say, as I snap out of my head. “Are you alright?” Ismael repeats. “yeah, why?” “You’re just not your usual self today” he says with a shrug. “I’m fine, just a couple things on my mind” “Are you thinking about that guy?” “What guy?” I asked, even though I knew exactly what guy he was referring to. “Your co-worker” “Why would I be thinking about him?” “Because you guys kissed” he says looking out the window and I’m left speechless and almost frozen. I pull up to his school and park, looking at him to see how mad he actually was. “I’m not going to yell, I’m not mad. I’m more disappointed that you could lie to our faces” he finishes about to get out the car without letting me explain anything. I lock the door before he opens it and grab his shoulder. “I didn’t lie” I say looking in his eyes. “So I imagined seeing him with his tongue down your throat?” he asked getting mad. “First watch your tone, remember I’m still your mother…and two, I didn’t lie” I tell him. “I didn’t know that was going to happen and honestly I don’t even know how I feel about it yet.” “From where I was it looked like you wanted it to happen, and I get that at some point you were going to start dating again after dude left, but I’m not going to let anyone hurt you again.” With that said Ismael got out the car but before closing the door he stopped, “but that doesn’t mean we don’t want you to find someone to make you happy aside from us, because let’s be honest no one is going to make you happier than us” he finished with a smile and jogged up to the school. I sat there staring at where my son had been for about 10 minutes before something snapped into place. My child was giving me permission to be happy, and although I know I’m a grown as woman, that made my heart beat so fast that I wasn’t sure if I was happy or terrified. Terrified of actually getting back into that life of dating and I don’t know if I could survive getting hurt again, and it scared me that even while remembering what happened last time, I was still considering it. I hear a phone ringing, just to realize that it was me calling Jonah, right when I went to hang up he picked up. “Hey is everything alright?” comes that sexy as voice I will never tire of hearing and I was instantly wet. “…umm yeah” “Oh so what’s up?” he asked. “I’m going to Bebe’s Café and…umm wanted to know if you wanted anything?” “I’ll meet you there” is all he said before hanging up the call. I got to call him back. I call Bonnie instead. “What happened?” Bonnie answered before the call even ringed. “Jonah came over my house last night because my big mouth daughter invited him, and we ended up almost having s*x out on the sidewalk on my street, my son said to be happy pretty much telling me to go for it with Jonah, by the way did I tell you Ismael saw me almost having s*x on the sidewalk? and now Jonah is waiting for me at Bebe’s” I finish taking a deep breathe. The call was silent and I looked at my phone, thinking the call dropped. “Bonnie” “ARE YOU f*****g KIDDING ME?!” she yells at me. “Huh?” “We are definitely having a conversation later lady…and you are going to meet him right now. Just come in late or tell old man Jenkins that y’all needed to work in a different environment, honestly I don’t really care what you tell him just make sure to go meet him” Bonnie finished and hung up. I just looked at my phone, like why is everyone f*****g hanging up on me today. I make it to Bebe’s Café in 5 minutes, walking in I immediately see Jonah seating in the corner away from everyone. I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to speak to him yet, but right at that moment he saw me and stood up, walking in over to me. “you aren’t running away from me again are you?” Jonah says smirking. “I didn’t run” is all I say before walking to the table he had come from, and he follows me. We sat down but he sits next to me instead of across and my stomach flips at his proximity. “You definitely ran” Jonah whispers, almost purring in my ear and immediately I blush as red as a tomato “I hope you don’t mind but I ordered for us” I hear Jonah say, as I try to recover my sanity. The waiter comes over with two mugs and sets one in front of me and the other in front of Jonah. Looking down I realized that he got me hot chocolate. “I hope hot chocolate is okay, since I got here, I’ve never seen you drink coffee” Jonah says watching me. “Can you please add caramel?” I ask the waiter. “More?” the waiter says. Looking at Jonah, who was just looking at my reaction. “How did you know to put caramel in my hot chocolate?” I asked, shocked. “Yeah” is all he said as he took a sip of his coffee. “How did you know?” “I didn’t…That’s how I drink hot chocolate and I ordered it hoping you liked it” Jonah answered, and that just made him fifty times more attractive to me, if that’s even possible. “Thank you” I said before taking a sip and it was honestly exactly the same way I drank my chocolate. I close my eyes just savoring the taste. “I’m glad you like it” I snap my eyes open completely forgetting he was watching me. Instantly I turn like 20 shades redder. “So…” he says taking in a breath and letting it go “before you tell me, that we can’t ever touch each other again, I want to take you on a date and before you say no, I’m not taking no for an answer” he quickly finishes. “Umm…I don’t know” I answer. I want to say yes but I can’t seem to form the small word. Jonah just stared at me, looking a bit disappointed.
