CHAPTER 17: RESPONSIBILITIES

1810 Words
Leif arrived at Lhan’s place at around 9:45pm. He gently knocked at their door and was greeted by Lhan’s gorgeous face. Smilingly he greeted. “Ms. Lhan, good evening! I am here to take you to Muzic House. I hope you didn’t wait for long.” “Absolutely not, brother Leif. I’m sorry if I become a burden to you. I know this is already out of your job. I told Dunce that he need not to bother sending you here but he was insistent.” Lhan explained as she closed their door and walked on the corridor with Leif. She felt like she was a burden to him. It was beyond his work scope that was why she looked guilty. “Don’t say that. My work scope is to follow my master’s orders either personal or business related.” Leif was polite and was easy to talk with. “He didn’t order you to kill right?” Lhan stopped walking when they reached the stairs and looked intently at Leif. Leif couldn’t help but chortled. “Pfft. That is a joke, right?” Although his master portrayed haughtiness, callousness, ruthlessness and indifference, he never dared to take one’s life and in fact, he lived with and followed the community law strictly despite being rich and powerful. “No. I am serious.” She seriously continued to gaze at him. His friendly tone made Lhan’s shyness shy away. “That is the usual novel plot. Rich, powerful and ruthless CEO plus a butler who does things as the boss commanded him.” Leif looked at the young girl’s eyes assessing the severity of truth in her words. “Ms. Lhan, don’t tell me that’s how you see my master?” Lhan continued walking and Leif followed as she answered his question. “Not really. It just came across my mind when you said that you follow all his orders. If my impression of him is like that, then I should have not agreed to be his girlfriend.” “Well, that’s good to hear then.” Leif said as he opened the passenger backseat door for Lhan, before he climbed in the driver’s seat. While on the road Lhan continued to have a chat with Leif but this time a different topic. “Brother Leif, can Dunce go to Muzic House tonight?” “Definitely, Ms. Lhan! But I can’t tell you exactly when. Most probably before 12.” Leif replied with his eyes focus on the road. He maintained a speed of 40km/h when driving. He did not want to scare his passenger and be the reason to be scolded by his master. “Do you usually have meetings at night?” Lhan pried. Honestly she was becoming more interested in Dunce’ lifestyle. “Depending on the other parties’ available time.” He said casually. “Does it mean that the company always works late?” Lhan. Leif shifted his glance to the road and to the rear view mirror to look at Lhan from time to time as he replied to her queries. “Not really Ms. Lhan. Only those who worked with our CEO and some Directors if they are needed or an important project is at work.” Leif answered honestly as how they usually operate at the company. “How about Dunce?” Leif smiled since Lhan started to show concern. “Our CEO is an epitome of a dedicated and sedulous leader. He never left the office if there are work undone until recently.” “I’m the cause? Sorry for being a burden.” Lhan apologetically said. “No, Ms. Lhan.” He strongly disagreed. And even if that was the case, he would not say so. What if she suddenly breaks up with him because of it? He did not want to lose his job. Nonetheless, Leif shared what he thought, “You are absolutely not a burden but my savior. At least now he knows how to rest a bit. With you by his side, he doesn’t forget to eat lunch and dinner unlike formerly he would only eat after his work is done. Before CEO and I almost lived in the office or outside dealing with his business partners. Ever since you appeared, my overtime days were lessened and I don’t need to work during Sundays.” But Lhan’s worry did not stop there. It was like one burden was lifted, so she had to uplift another one. “He usually visits me past 3pm and we ate together. Does it mean that he only eats his lunch at such time?” Her question was more directed to herself as a worrying remark so she almost whisperingly asked not really intended for Leif to answer. Leif read the girl’s mood that she surely was blaming herself for his master’s late lunch. So, even if he knew that the question was not really for him, he still answered. “Ahm…yes, Ms. Lhan. But don’t worry it is not your fault. You know, seeing him eating twice while working is already a big change. Before we can’t almost see him eat at all unless there’s a business dinner meeting or business lunch date.” “That’s ridiculous!” Lhan felt a sudden angst. “He is not trying to kill himself, is he?” Leif just smiled at her sparingly. His smile told her that he agreed with her. “We are here.” He said after-so. He parked near the entrance of the building and was about to come out and to open the door for Lhan when the latter stopped him by holding onto his arm. ‘So this is how to fall in love.’ Lhan thought. She suddenly wanted to take care of his well being. Lhan hesitated for a moment before asking. “Brother Leif, can I have your phone number? Don’t worry I am not looking for a text mate. But can I just ask for Dunce when he is at work, like checking if he is doing fine. I am just trying to fulfill some of responsibilities as his girlfriend.” This time Leif gave her his happiest smile. “Sure, little Miss. Here’s my card.” He thought to himself as he handed over the card. ‘No wonder my master fell in love with her.’ Lhan kept the card in her wallet as Leif opened the door for her. But out of nowhere they heard Jaden’s voice. Jaden was one of his master’s best pals known for his promiscuity, easy going and had a flashy character. “Hey, Leify! What are you doing here? Where’s your master?” His lax and carefree attitude was something what women found charismatic about him. Knowing his character, Leif still respected him. Although his character wasn’t pleasing for him, Jaden was still the kindest among their exclusive coterie and the only one who always pacify his friends when they were fighting or angry at each other. “Master Jaden, please do not call me that.” “Oh! Hello, Lhany!” Jaden greeted Lhan as soon as he laid his eyes on her. “That bastard Dunce sure is lucky.” Leif came in between them as if protecting Lhan from a voracious fox. “Master Jaden.” “Hey, Leify! I will not hurt your future madam so calm down. In fact, she can throw me anytime with one punch if she wants to. She doesn’t need your protection. Go! I’ll take care of her.” Jaden gently pushed Leif away dismissing the latter. He gazed back at Lhan. “Where’s your hubby? Ain’t he coming today, does he?” It was Leif who answered before he left. “He is in the middle of a meeting. But he will surely come.” He turned to Lhan, “I have to go now Ms. Lhan. I still need to go back to our office.” “Thank you, brother Leif.” Lhan bowed and politely bid. Jaden put his arms over her shoulders as soon as Leif left. “Lhany, how does it feel being Dunce’ girlfriend?” He asked casually feeling friendly and with full at ease towards Lhan. This action of his made Lhan flustered that she stopped walking. Fleur always reminded her that only her closest friends and significant others could treat her like that. “Is there problem?” Jaden asked when he noticed that Lhan stopped her steps. “Mister Jaden, we are not close so remove your arm while I am still considering you as Dunce’ and boss Aljun’s close friend.” Lhan domineeringly enunciated her command. But before Jaden could remove his arm, someone hit him already at the back. “Hey, playboy! Remove your arm from my friend or I’ll chop it down!” It was Elise who hit him with a chopping hand. “Woah! Who the heck...Oh! Pretty Elise! Don’t worry I am not hitting on your friend. Dunce would kill me before you can even lay your hand on me.” He rubbed the spot that Elise hit. “Elise already did.” Lhan briefly interjected. “Nice meeting you in person! I am Jaden.” Jaden reached his right hand expecting for a handshake to which Elise ignored. “Lhan, come here. Even if he is Dunce’ friends you can’t just get closer to him. Who knows what he will do to you? He is a known playboy. Once he is done with them, he discarded those girls like a crumpled paper. Who knows? He might even have a s*x with men. Don’t touch anything dirty.” Elise said in exaggeration as if the person she was talking about was a total sicko while looking at him discriminately from head to toe. Being part of high-class society, Elise was fully aware of Dunce and his friends’ character, all thanks to gossipers from the Elite circle. “Hey you are pretty but your mouth is sure foul. I am not what rumors describe me to be.” Jaden was trying to explain but still completely ignored as the young ladies walked towards the bar with Elise continuously reminding Lhan what to do. He wanted to shout that he never forced women to have s*x with him and he made it sure that they were clean. “Better tell your boyfriend that he is harassing you! Don’t come near him in the future unless you are with Dunce.!” Elise advised. “Uhm.” Lhan nodded earnestly in answer. “Hey!” Was the only and last word they heard from Jaden before they distanced themselves from him and walked through their quarters to meet with the other bandmates. Leaving him no choice, Jaden annoyingly scratched his head and went to his and his friends’ usual spot.
